Anticosti Island
Whitetail Deer

Going unguided on a rifle hunt 7-12 November with my son. Anyone hunted there? Seems like a lot to pay for small deer with little antlers but I'm pretty excited.
A friend of mine did it 10 years ago and loved it.
Been three times, but back in the hay days (late 80's mid 90's) when the place was over run with 100-130" bucks.
Everybody shot two decent Bucks, I've heard its tougher these days.
Good Luck
I've never been but I have friends who go every year. One of those friends has booked two hunts there for 2016. Apparently he will be allowed two deer of either sex per hunt.
From what I have heard the 2015 success rate on bucks was below average, with the weather being mentioned as one of the reasons.
As far as the deer population, I don't know if it's a low cycle period, but from what they told me, I think that it's rebounding from the low of a couple of years ago.
Sorry I can't be more specific.
Thanks for the replies. I'm not worried about rack size. Just looking forward to hunting with my son. If I don't see a buck that excites me I may well shoot a doe or two.
You will see a lot of deer. I have hunted it twice. 2004 and 2005. We all killed 2 bucks(4 of us) the biggest being 130" 10pt. As has been said it is not what it once was but it is a great trip. Lots of stuff to see and the island is beautiful in its own right. There are spots where the deer are pretty tame. We saw some eating from peoples hands! Shawn
Even if it was the last moment of my hunt I couldn't shoot something like that. Same for the Hungarian partridges that roost under my deck.
I went in 1999. We were allowed 2 deer and I took a 6pt and an 8pt. The 8pt was about a 110" buck and both were in velvet as it was September. My 8 was the largest taken in camp with 12 guys. It was a fun hunt and the food/lodging were great.
For the price, there are better places to go with a chance at much bigger bucks. But it was a fun trip. Enjoy and good luck.
I too have heard that it is a fun place and hope you have a good time. A friend who had been there changed the name to "Ain't it costly Island" because it was so expensive.
But he did take his two deer and had a good time, so I guess it worked out for him.
Getting to hunt with you son is very special, Treasure the time together.

Good news..Exchange rate today was $1,000 = 1,384 Can.
My hunt, including license, flight from Montreal including return of all meat, 4-wheel pickup, ATV, very nice cabin on the ocean, will cost about $2,500 U.S.
Anyone have any experience bow hunting here? Most people seem to use firearms. Have seen other forums mention the cover tends to be too thick for archery, but wasn't sure if it was just their particular place on the island.
How do you draw a tag? I have wanted to hunt there since I was a kid

No tag draw, just book with an outfitter or government owned camps.
