Fun to do before the bear hunt!
Morning chores:)
Great photo. Congrats on the fine table fare. Hunt
Looks like you'll be eating good!
Congrats Charlie! Here you go.
Hawkeye: Fantastic pics! C
Those are some big ones, Charlie!
Good luck on the bear hunt buddy!
Good stuff guys! Tough year here in Iowa for morels, at least for me:) Got this pick few days ago though.
Morels in Mo. and Tn. were hard to come by this yr.at least for us nice pics. Lewis
Sorry. No turks. This season has been rough for me. I've been out A LOT. But only have 1 turkey to show for it.
I did finally find some morels this morning though...
out of the woods and into the pan
Yesterday morning, the bonus.
Good stuff Paul and Mad Angler :)
You dogs! I am so jealous. Recently spent 3 days in a burn in CA (where you sometimes find them) - nada, zipperoony, bupkus, zilch. Not much in the way of critters either, although I found a bear print near a water hole that was 6 inches wide and 9 long - seemed big to me.
Turks--1 me--0 this year so far!
I've only had 1 chance to go so far this spring. Had a bird on the next ridge over gobbling for 2 hrs straight back at me but he wouldn't come in & from where I was at, I knew he would bust me if I tried to move in on him so I quit & went and worked on food plots the rest of the day!
Found a hat full the 1 time I went, but the wife & a couple of her girlfriends have cleaned up on em this year! They have probably found 20-25lbs of them this year.
Paul you the man congrats hope to meet you one day Lewis
Paul, you did awesome. Congrats and God Bless
So far, I have struck out in both this year. I still have 2 days left for turkeys, but here in Ga the morels are loooong gone! I'm on the very southern edge of their range and they normally show up in early-mid March, but we had a very mild and dry late winter, and I never could find any. I envy you guys farther north that really rake them in every year.
Hopefully I'll manage to find a stupid/lovesick/uneducated tom on one of these last two mornings. I've either killed or called in 5 different gobblers in the last 2 days of the season over the last 4 years, so I'm not giving up yet, but the chances are looking pretty slim right now!
Congrats to those who have connected on both the birds and the fungi!
Fantastic pics guys! The purity of fresh turkey, fresh morels and welcoming a new spring is truly a blessing. THANKS!!
These pics were within about 100 yards of each other
Bears are next on the Spring list!
Here's mine...
(sorry, turk was with a shotgun)
Makes you wonder who looked at a morel or an oyster first and thought "shoot, I'm gunna eat it".
What state did you BAG those beauties in, Charlie? Looks like a couple of nontypical in there! Is that the new Sitka shroom pattern for this year??

Click the embedded link and check out the HUGE morel found in Iowa. It is a monster!
Charlie are those Morels in the North East? I've been looking and so far haven't found any
My morels are from New York State near the border of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
We actually had to expel some Morel poachers from our property this year. Bernie voters no doubt:)
2017 edition.
Probably won't have as big of a problem with the Bernie shroom poaching crowd this year Charlie. I think they're all out in Berkley listening to Ann Coulter ;>}
No birds but we found 30 morels 2 weeks ago several pheasant backs and 1 shed.
Kelly..... are the pheasant backs good eating? My wife found a huge one yesterday, but nobody I know has ever tried one.
I have brought home a total of about 9 or 10 pounds of morels so far this spring. The photo shows last Thursday's take of 5.5 pounds.
Pheasantbacks are good if they're young. I've been finding them by the dozens. Ate some, froze some, and dehydrated some.
I've only found a handful of morels so far.
No turkeys for me either this year. Hopefully I can change that in the next couple of weeks.
"buzz mc: False Morel?"
Real one. I find alot of black capped ones early in the year at higher elevations here in East TN.
My Morels are usually gettable around 5/8 so we'll see how it goes. Great pics as always Hawkeye!!!
Thanks Charlie and good luck!
Still looking for a turkey.
DIY, Public land!!! Good one Nick! ;>}
Spot n stalk or baited??!!
There's not much competition on the public ground when it's in the 30's, wind is howling, and spitting sleet/snow. lol
Turkey comes in tomorrow here in PA. Hopefully find some more of these too....
bud: Why do you have them in water? Curious?
Charlie.....we split ours in half lengthwise and soak them in salt water to help get rid of any bugs that have crawled into or onto them.
Troy, the hot oil kills them. ;-)
Nick....I cook em in butter, so I didn't want to chance it!
Found 50-some morels after work Friday in western Pa. Most were too old to eat, but still a successful hunt.
Quick rinse off to clean off dirt and bugs. Don't leave in there. I use salt water like t-Roy. Fry in butter.
Ok, got it. I cut them in half lengthwise then observe if there's bugs or not.
Ever seen a Turkey put this much on a scale?
Traper and t-roy win prizes for having shrooming kids. I am seriously jealous all the way around.
Almost Charlie. I shot one in 1979 in Iowa that weighed 27.25lbs. They opened up turkey season in iowa for the first time in our area in the late 70s. Used to have to put into the draw to try and get a tag. That bird was the second biggest bird registered in the state that year.
I think that they've killed a lot of birds well over 30+ lbs since.
Found 119 morels yesterday after work.
Holy moly, Jeff D! Going to mount it?
A guys needs a little green with his gold....and his bronze and red and blue and white and.....well you know! Great weekend on the high plateau!!
2017 version! Great year for big golden ones
