Utah Book Cliffs Spike Hunt

My buddy and I have drawn a Book Cliffs mule deer tag for this year.
If I am reading the regs correctly the Books are also a spike bull only unit (no cows?). So if one or both of us would get lucky and tag a deer early in the trip we could run to town and buy an OTC general elk tag and then chase spike bills for the rest of the hunt?
Am I reading that correctly? Always like to have a backup plan in place!

Yes. No cows and it's a good idea to wait til you kill a deer. I have a hard time hunting deer if I see elk, even spikes!

John, that would be a serious problem for me if I bought the elk tag ahead of time. I spent 15 points on the deer tag, but I know myself too well when it comes to elk. Like you, I'd be off chasing spikes and forget all about deer. I can go back any year after elk, so deer will have to be the first priority. Thanks!
