Hi,

Free Aus Buff Bowhunt for 2018 season (July-Sept) for one hunter, which include 2 x Buffalo of your choice and free accommodation/food. (and boars and scrub bulls)

Draw framework:

- post any information in this thread about either the hunting area (Northern Territory of Australia) OR about Australian Water Buffalo; - the draw will run until the end of February 2017; - I will draw a random post and announce the winner 2 March 2017; - the hunt is not transferable and if the winner cannot make it, I will simply draw another.

This time frame allows you to make flight arrangements, ask any questions, prepare your gear for the hunt, etc.

If you are interested, please check out the minimum gear requirements on our website www.ausbuffsafari.com

Best wishes for the festive season and new year.

Regards, Eugene

ps: Fun-fact ... The Northern Territory is larger than South-Africa or Namibia.

Water Buffalo are herbivores, consuming a variety of grasses and plants as they graze. They will also consume various types of plants that grow in the shallow areas of the water. They don’t stay and eat in one place for long. The movement of the herd helps to ensure that the land will be able to grow new grass and other elements again.

There are many very small settlements scattered across the northern territory, but the larger population centers are located on the single paved road that links Darwin to southern Australia, the Stuart Highway, known to locals simply as "the track".

The Northern Territory is also home to two spectacular natural rock formations, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), which are sacred to the local Aboriginal peoples and which have become major tourist attractions.

In the northern part of the Territory lies Kakadu National Park, which features breathtaking wetlands and native wildlife. To the north of that lies the Arafura Sea, and to the east lies Arnhem Land, whose regional centre is Maningrida on the Liverpool River delta. There is an extensive series of river systems in the Northern Territory. These rivers include: the Alligator Rivers, Daly River, Finke River, McArthur River, Roper River, Todd River and Victoria River.

Also. . . I REALLY want to go there. I've been researching it off and on for a couple years for a combination hunt/vacation with the wife. Once I knock off Asia in about 600 days, it's the only continent I haven't visited yet aside from Antarctica

I'd really like to drive to Ayers Rock/Ularoo and see that area as well

Hi,

Thanks for all the interest, much appreciated.

The way I will select the winner:

- Reduce multiple posts from the same person to one, ensuring everybody has an equal chance;

- Write poster name on piece of paper;

- Mix all the pieces together in a container;

- Ask my 4 year old son (that already wants to hunt buff … lol) to draw a piece of paper from the bowl.

Good luck to everybody and looking forward to share a camp fire with one of you.

Regards,

Eugene

The Northern Territory is often referred to as the "Top End" and has a total population of 250,000. Do all buffalo die with four feet in the air?

From: SteveB
20-Dec-16
From Katherine heading north, to the Top End of the Northern Territory where Darwin is located there is no winter as the climate is tropical monsoonal with a dry and wet season. The dry season from May to October is typically when tourists visit, as the days are filled with blue skies and sunshine and the evening’s cool breezes bring down the temperature. The lower humidity and average daily temperature of around 32°C make for perfect weather while the southern parts of Australia face winter.

The population is the nation’s youngest, at a median age of just 31.3 years*, but also the smallest with just over 235 000 people living and working in this vast expanse of land. Northern Territorians are typically vibrant, happy, outdoor-loving people who know how to enjoy life.

Water buffalo were imported to Australia in the 19th century to supply meat to remote northern settlements. The settlements and their buffalo were abandoned in 1949 and, despite harvesting for meat, hides and as hunters' trophies, feral buffalo spread across the northern floodplains. The Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Eradication Campaign reduced feral buffalo numbers significantly in the 1980s and 1990s but numbers are again very high right across northern Australia causing significant damage to wetlands.

They must be managed. I'd be happy to do my part :)

Their only natural predators in Australia are adult saltwater crocodiles, with whom they share the billabongs, and dingoes, which have been known to prey on buffalo calves and occasionally adult buffalo when the dingoes are in large packs. Either Grizzly Sticks or Carbon Express arrows set up with 300 grain single bevel heads:) Have worked well off of my normal 60 pound bow and shot completely through a NA bison. May have to pull my 70 pound longbow out of retirement for this hunt, though! Sounds like an awesome adventure with the possibility of catching some barramundi on my fly rod as well!
