Hello I was wondering if anybody has tried the wind drifter turkey decoys from Ultimate Predator. They look like they would work good for fooling birds but was wondering if the movement looks natural. Thanks Jeff W.
I don't have any experience with wind drifters. I had never heard of them so looked up their website. Most of the turkey areas I hunt have lots of wind. Turkeys really like movement but if the wind is howling...hopefully they can be tied down?
If you want the best of the best possibly try DSD's. They are super expensive but according to those willing to fork out $ they are well worth the investment. The next tier down from DSD would be Avian-X. I use and abuse Avians. They are collapsible and can be blown up in a matter of a minute. One of my favorite decoys for running and gunning that hardly takes up any room in a pack is Mrs Purrfect. They are fairly realistic and the material blows in the wind...which gives a realistic appearance.
With that said, I would think 1 or 2 wind drifters set up with some more realistic looking decoys (DSD's or Avian X) may give a little more movement to a set (in a slight breeze. A set of wind drifters in heavy wind may not be the best?
Jim, during higher winds, the wire that supports the wind drifter decoy can be staked on both side to prevent it from spinning around but still have good movement. Paul
Used them last spring and will again this year. Generally where I hunt the wind is null or very light early and picks up as the morning goes on. These decoys work awesome in no, light or moderate wind. I have had a hen feed amongst the decoys (see video below) two different times in a one hour period when the wind was different. She was very comfortable. In high wind I would put a hanger stake on either side. Good luck! C
Yes you are correct, i looked up the site and a quick glance thought oh i have one of those decoys and jumped the gun with the pic... ehem sorry Charlie.
I just watched a video on you tube and thought these dekes are amazing, from the movement they seem like the real thing... I will be purchasing a couple soon, as the nice weather here in WNY is giving me spring fever.
The movement in a slight breeze looks amazing. I wonder if a similar stake could be put on a D Smith or Avian X decoy? The movement looks great but the decoy itself needs some help!
Those other decoys are too heavy to be placed on a "similar stake" and then achieve the same results. The EP decoys are make from a foam like material and are balanced to move on the wire with a wind. It does take a little more than a "slight breeze" to get them to move and bob.
