One of the other threads got me to thinking about January and February deer seasons. Are there states that count a deer taken in January or February toward the previous year's bag limit? In other words, the bag limits run during a time period other than a calendar year, July 1 to June 30, or something similar? In my state, the one deer per year (buck only) bag limit is based on a calendar year, so if you take one on January 1 you can't hunt again until after January 1 of the following year, so at least a full year or longer (and not be allowed to hunt in the fall seasons - firearms or archery). I always thought it would be a lot better if they did run from July 1 to June 30, so if you were successful the wait to hunt again would always be under a year (in our state 10 1/2 months at the longest).

I put "2016" on meat packaged up to 12/31/16, "2017" on meat packaged after 1/1/17

Texas hunting licenses are good from August to August and our Outdoor Annual ( laws and bag limits ) are for 2016/2017. So those of us that hunt MLDP properties are still hunting on our current licenses. . Muzzy season ends next Sunday for those that participate, but MLDP properties are legal with any weapon until the last day of February. Bag limits do not apply on MLDP properties, as the property is issued a number of buck and antlerless tags based on a deer census.

MT and AK both are season limits, but AK requires a new hunting license on Jan 01, but special draw permits are good for the season. Same for our Harvest tags.

Louisiana and Mississippi seasons run till the end of January. Some areas in La go until Feb. 15th for archery. Seasons are not calendar years here.

If I kill a deer today, it will be logged just as if I killed last Oct. 1. It will be a hunting season 2016/17 kill. Next fall, through January 2018, will be counted as hunting season 2017/18.

New Jersey you are allowed to take a buck from January 1 to mid February but it is a completely separate tag from the rest of the year.

NM seasons run April 1 - March 31.

Thus with a valid archery deer tag (e.g. valid Sept 1-24 2016 & Jan 1-15 2017) it is possible to kill 2 deer in one CALENDAR year (Jan 1-15 & the following Sept 1-24). However, those would be 2 separate deer tags for separate hunting season years.

And even though our archery tags are (for most units anyway) good for Sept & Jan, you can only kill 1 deer on the tag. Kill one in Sept, you can't hunt in Jan.

Clear as mud?
