Congrats on all fronts! Great start to the year.
We didn't see many mature bucks this year. Lots of younger bucks. I think I won bragging rights on overall score, but Lisa's buck is older with a heavier rack. We were taking down a ladder stand to move it when Lisa heard a buck grunt. In my old age, I didn't hear it, but when I looked I saw a nice buck following a doe down the ridge in front of us. This is the stand where I killed a buck Dec 31, 2015 and a second buck in January 2016.
Not the same buck as we first saw, another buck was higher on the ridge. I grunted at him with Lisa's pink grunt tube and we could tell he was on his way in. At about 35 yards Lisa got pretty excited and whispered "where's my rangefinder". I said "your not going to need your rangefinder". At about 25 yards I started saying wait, wait... because he was coming straight for us with his head down. At ten yards he decided we weren't a buck or a doe and turned to walk away. I mouth grunted at him and he turned back to take a second look. I said, "right behind the shoulder" and "ole lung shot" aced him. Then she said "it didn't penetrate!!!" Although it looked as though the arrow was hanging out with only the broadhead being under his hide, I knew differently and said "good shot, he's dead". I knew the Rage had penetrated his chest cavity and hit the opposite shoulder. The arrow bounced back and it appeared to have not penetrated, but it did. The buck went 30 yards and fell over dead.
This was a spot Roy had helped pick out for me a few years ago. We call it the Roy Stand. When the buck fell over dead, Lisa looked at me with a look of disbelieve on her face and said "Roy must have had something to do with this". I said "I reckon so".
The next morning I saw my buck at about 80 yards and grunted him in too. I was in my ladderstand and shot him at 35 yards.
Lisa's buck had been mauled by a lion. She noticed he was limping pretty bad when he came in and when I skinned him I could see several fresh wounds from the back of his neck all the way to his hind quarters.
I killed my lion with a friend who has a dogs in the Tucson area. It was a nearly 9 mile chase started at 9:30am and ending with an old warrior of a Tom in a tree at 4:00pm. What a great hunt that challenged me physically but was extremely rewarding considering the lion itself, the effort put forth by the dogs, and the friendship of my buddy.
Nice work. Congrats on the deer and lion!
Great bucks and cat Bob! CONGRATS!
Bob and Lisa, congrats on nice bucks again in '17. Nice deer killer you bagged too! Been a slow year for me on Coues so far. Hope it picks up. The wet monsoon made for a lot of tall grass, filled water holes and dispersed deer (I think).
Bob, congrats to you and Lisa! Well done!
Congrats. Who was the houndsman?
My friends name is Andrew Knowlton. He does work through Rim Rock Outfitters. Andy is a great guy who loves to hunt and loves to hunt with his dogs. Only thing I would say is expect to have your butt walked off if you call him for a lion hunt. He wore me out.
Not too bad for an Alaskan deplorable :-)
Only thing better would have been to have the redneck lawyer responsible for Trump carrying Pennsylvania there with us!!!
Outstanding. Congratulations. Ed F
Went to college with Andy, he's good people!
Good job Bob and Lisa. I sent you a PM of the lion hunter whom hunts your Coues area and has taken many lions out of there. I don't know Roy but I know I showed you guys this area for the first time when Bob missed three shots from a lawn chair 80 yds from (due to severe vertigo or balance problems) our camp and Lisa stuck a buck that got away. It is a great spot and hope it stays that way. Lisa found a huge 128" and change Coues skull on that trip I took Ed Manchin from P&Y in there a couple of years ago and there were lots of deer and lots of lions.
Ed Manchin is wonderful guy!
