Let's say a person does not have or want to use any points, and just wants to kill an elk with a bow, and eat it. Quality of bulls, bull cow ratio, bla bla don't care just wants to hunt for meat, will shoot first legal animal that presents a shot. OTC no guide or trespass fees. What state, and for Colorado, what GMU?

Trophy units are still best because the lessor pressured animals are easier to get an arrow into. OTC animals are on the lookout for human predators because if they aren't, they die.

If any elk on a DIY OTC public land hunt is what you're after, it's pretty easy to look at stats and figure out where the elk are getting shot on public land.

I would go to Utah and buy a Spike or Cow tag in one of the LE units lower tag cost and you can learn the unit

DIY over the counter with a bow, Utah limited entry unit otc cow/spike tag. If you just want meat go to the Vermejo Park Ranch and shoot one out of the pickup with a rifle. I know some really bad outa shape hunters that go kill a cow there every year, usually on the first morning.

You are from CO, what GMU do you suggest?

For Colorado, I would look for GMUs that undersubscribed cow tags for the rifle seasons

Those units are over herd objectives and the elk population is good.

I'm not looking for a lazy hunt, but I'll take easy. It's that time of year to plan, and I'm not sure what I want to do yet. This research is also more to help a friend, she will bow or rifle hunt. She is a nonres either way, but it would better to help her in Colorado, than meeting her elsewhere. I also wanted to kinda start a different thread. Seems there are multiple threads going on about elk hunting, all concerning "quality of bulls and number of bulls" but there is more to hunting than antlers. Thanks for all the input so far.

I'd also say UT limited otc cow/spike units. In CO all the "easy" archery hunts take points (even cow hunts do) because they are lumped into the Either Sex tags , trespass fee, or a voucher. If you want easy then the trade off is usually $$.

if rifle is an option I would look at those late (Dec) cow hunts in areas with lots of public. Many 4th seasons can be had on 2nd choice. My kids and friends kill cows and raghorns every year on these hunts. I'd look at the NW part of CO
