Just got back from a COLD!! trip up chasing elk and Buff in Wyoming on the NER--National Elk Refuge--
In the -degree's most mornings and that strong 'Wyoming Breeze' was brisk!
Slim pickings for elk on the North or South units of the NER
And not a Single Buff spotted as they haven't got any snow and this is basically the first cold spell of the winter this year.
The Rams/sheep are down and along the main access road to the NER
I'll post more when I get back from my hike here along the Wasatch Front this morning.
Thanks for looking--------->
Good luck, Robb
Awesome! One of my favorite places in the world.
Looking forward to it, Rob!
Did you ask them rams where they were going?
Looking forward to more! Looks a wee bit chilly...
Thanks for posting up the pics, Robb!
Nice Robb. Jackson is one of the coldest places I know of. Eventually the elk will be thick!
So awesome! I've seen those rams in the winter there....almost like a zoo that place!
Not sure what was wrong with this Bull??
Really sad though.....
Maybe Elk Mange??
Something was wrong with his mouth too Broken Jaw??
Cool pics. Thanks for sharing.
I would wonder if that elk isn't removed from the herd before too long.
Hey, I think I've seen these pics somewhere before! ;-)
Thanks, Robb!
Doesn't look like that bull has too long to live with the shape he's in!
Thanks for sharing Robb looking forward to additional posts!
That bull probably has scabies (a skin rash/irritation caused by infestation of mites), which is somewhat prevalent in the western portion of Wyoming. It can lead to mortality, although studies have shown it mostly affects the largest bulls more than others, probably due to the increased stress of carrying the top-heavy load. An open winter may spare that bull's life.
Beautiful pics. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for sharing, I love that place! I would like to do that late hunt some time just to get to go back and see that beautiful country.
Never seen a bull look like that before. Thanks for sharing
I was in JH last week and about 3 weeks ago. The bison were east of slide lake, lots of em. There were just a few in Morman row area, along with 7 very nice bull moose hanging out together. Didn't see many elk on the refuge, but the bighorns are numerous in the Dubois area.
My foot is 11.5 wide.

Santered around there this morning. It was 4 degrees on my truck mirror right before daylight. Ton of elk just off the boundary waiting to drop down. Not a really a true elk hunt but heck of a lot of fun. Hunt in the morning till noon get cleaned up and have fun in Jackson Hole rest of day. Saw two elk with that mange. Bull and a cow. Guy told me it was scabies caused by mites. Never saw it before.
Well you can get dehydrated even when it's cool outside.

Bud, did you tag along with Robb?
True that bud!!
Hunt elk in the AM----
Back to the cabin, and Bar-hopping/Shopping into the evening!
Good luck, Robb
This Bighorn was in DuBois.

Yooper89 no I did not. I brought my wife on long weekend. She loves to hunt and really loves to come here. I would have bought a round or two Robb for sure.
That bison hunt is a different experience. A lot of waiting for them to cross onto the refuge. The scenery including variety of wildlife is worth the trip in itself.
I mountain lion hunted south of JH a few years back. Some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever experienced.
Thanks bud!
That was me onthe south unit 'wondering around' ! ha with my bow.
What a different year it is this year compared to many of the last years.
12 out of the last 13 years I have drawn a Permission slip..... granted not much of a 'hunt' but a fun 3-4 days in JH and on the NER
Good luck, Robb
Every time I go thru this area I get the creepies!!
Kinda like Jerimiah Johnson when he went thru that Indian burial site...
You should be calling the Jackson office of G&F almost everyday to check on bison movements. They'll come down with some heavy snow. I watched the Kelly webcam to see when the herd moved down from Mormon Row. Snow shoes are a must when the snow gets deep Good luck, my cow bison was harvested on the 3 rd day of my planned hunt, DIY. Tag and Drag is a must also.
Robb, What caused all the dead elk,or deer, from what?
I miss that place. Fishing flat creek in September was hard to beat.
Yeah, what's with all the death and carnage?
When the elk winter kill or just die they drag them over to this area away from the herds that they are feeding and taking Tourist on the Sleigh rides.
That is what Dave told me about 6-7 years ago. He manages the horses thru out the year.
Good luck, Robb
Like the pic? My wife and I spend a weekend and take the sleigh ride in Febuary,.. a cheap weekend
