No, I’m not gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

For those of you who remember 2008, I wrote a political blog on Bowsite. com about Sarah Palin - the first "Dream Babe. " Now we have a new "Dream Babe" - who just happens to be a very smart and charismatic Congressman who not only identifies himself as a ‘Bowhunter’ - but as of today the Secret Service does too (Codename: Bowhunter).

Despite your politics, you can’t help but admire this young politician. He’s the chair of the House Budget Committee, a devoted husband and father, an avid fitness buff, considered a financial expert even by President Obama, but most important to all of us - he’s a bowhunter and a good one at that.

Paul hails from Wisconsin and despite his schedule does a fair bit of whitetail hunting there. For a recent feature in TIME Magazine Paul Ryan used a photo of him drawing a Mathews Bow (also from Wisconsin). That’s a ballsy move considering only a tiny fraction of the US population bowhunts. While it would be ‘safer’ to hold a baseball glove, or a nine iron, he chose a bow and that’s just cool.

But there’s more to like. According to Jay McAninch, CEO and President of the Archery Trade Association, Paul insists on paying for all his own stuff. Unlike most of the politicians and celebrities that not only expect free hunts and gear - they insist on it, Paul Ryan does the opposite. He won’t take a free hunt or gear and he pays for everything himself without announcing it. He has also helped the archery industry on several occasions.

So let’s add this all up. He’s smart, fit, classy, good looking, a great speaker, and he kills critters with a bow.

MSNBC must be going nuts!

It makes me think the anti-hunting; gun hating crowd has already lost. I remember the days when public figures did all they could to hide their passion for hunting and guns. But now, even liberal Democrats see hunting as a way to reach blue dogs and independents. While I doubt we’ll see Obama spraying deer urine along a rub line, I do expect to see Joe Biden in black face paint lead a pack of hog hounds into the Florida swamps. "Unchain those dogs!" He shrieks as he runs through the swamp - a hunting knife clutched by his perfectly bleached teeth.

No doubt, this is true progress. And whether Romney/Ryan win or lose this November we can all agree that the image of Bowhunters is a bit more favorable to the average citizen. Nike and Coke pay giant bucks to have smart, respected public figures represent their brands. We Bowhunters just got one for free. This has been a good month for us and it will be even better if Romney/Ryan win in November.

But my motivation for this article is not just about how cool Ryan is, it’s also my small attempt at a Get-Out-The-Vote effort with you - our visitors.
The fact that Ryan identifies himself as a Bowhunter is immeasurably positive for those of us who live and breathe archery season. But there are things far more important than hunting facing this nation. We have vast unemployment, out of control deficit spending, class warfare, and a President that hypocritically demonizes successful businesses while he spoons with celebrities in Hollywood. I didn’t vote for Obama, but I love our country and hoped that his rhetoric held true and prove this skeptic wrong. Unfortunately I was right, and what has happened since January 2009 can only be described as a failed experiment of epic proportions.

I come from a family of Democrats, many of my friends are Democrats, and lots of you are too. This isn’t about Democrat or Republican. It’s about preserving the Constitution, maintaining our leadership position in the world, and passing to our children a Country that’s stronger than the one my generation inherited. Unfortunately our elected officials have failed us - on both sides of the aisle. What we are looking for is leadership. Not pandering to interest groups and kicking the can down the road. I think Americans are ready to make tough choices. I know I am. I am willing to sacrifice for the good of the nation so long as the money is well spent. That’s why I like Ryan. He’s not sugar coating the hard pill we need to swallow. The fact that he’s a bowhunter is just gravy for my fiscal backstraps.

As a bowhunter who owns a successful small business I think it’s time that Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike took a hard look at the realities facing our nation. And while we may be distracted chasing a 300 inch elk or a 150 class whitetail this fall, understand that the very foundation that provides the freedom to hunt - or to buy a Mathews bow from a successful small business- may be at stake this November.

Romney made a good choice. Now it’s your turn to make a good choice.

I agree Pat.This election should not be about Democrat or Republican. We have some serious issues concerning the health of this nation and the direction it seems to be heading. I believe that congress is just as much to blame as the presidents. Go back and look into history and consider the great empires and see the reasons they fell. They fell from "within and not from without." The major reasons listed in practically all of them are very prevalent now for the United States. Power,Wealth, Greed and Morality. The haves and the have nots. We are the oldest know goverment of supposed democracy that has ever existed and we could very well be on the verge of having that changed. As they say,"History repeats itself." lareva

I don't know what or who to believe anymore. I can care less if the man hunts or not. I want someone to explain to me how we can give out tons of bailout money and not change the rules. How can we give our job to other countries! How much more can you tax us working folks! Is it true that there is a 3.8% tax that will be going to this new Healthcare when we sell our houses? When are we going to make people accountable for their actions! When are we going to start building things again?

I want someone to tell me it ends now! I want the next president to tell me," from the president down, we are paid too much and saleries/benefits need to be dramatically cut". Every elected official needs to dip from the same well as us and this can only happen if we cut their pay and benefits. The decisions they make need to effect their families. No vested benefit rights, no top of the line insurance and no more pensions. You let the economy crap out, you get a 401K and social security. Once you are eligible for medicare you must switch and pay for your own secondary. A no tolerance policy. You get caught doing something wrong you and your family just lost what the taxpayers were providing for you. PEOPLE NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!!

I disagree with some and agree with some. Not very nice about the president's wife. It should be clear that the current administration was handed a hornets nest from past administrations. However, no one forced anyone to run for president and I'm not pleased how things are being handled. The American Dream was afforded to many. No one gave them any handouts! They worked hard, made money and spent less than what they made to attain that American Dream! Our government needs to just that! Sorry for being so long!

I think the discussion of politics invites those prone to chronic debating to feel permitted to engage in just that.

When all the bubbles of rhetoric pop, there are still the hard unpleasant realities to deal with. Bailouts and money pits can only bury them for so long. Governments sending money to banks and swapping worthless commodities that only exist in the theory of a theory only work for as long as people believe in them.

Even an unreal economy reported on by an unreal media cheering on an unreal leader can only run for so long until reality punches through the illusion, the curtain falls, the magicians scramble off the stage with rabbits and doves tucked into their pants, and everyone wakes up to realize that the dream is over and we realize that we are entering a world where the stories no longer matter and history is about to begin.

Socially, economically and national security. Hey he knew what the problems were when he was asking for the job and if after 4 years he's still blaming the guy before him what good is he. He even had both house for the first 2 years and did nothing other than cram an injust health bill down our throats and hand Chrysler over to the union disregarding bankruptsy to do it.

I just cannot fathom any hunter voting for any democrat in general and Obama in particular. If these guys ( democrats) had their way none of us would be allowed to hunt or own guns ( for hunting or protection) . It is crystal clear tht Obama wants to turn America into a typical European country with huge debts( already there ), high taxes ,business choking regulations with every citizen depending on the government for their every need. If any of us ran our household like Obama runs our country we would all be way past broke. It is so refreshing to see a bowhunter( Paul Ryan) regular guy ( although brillant) running for the secound highest office in the land. Romney made a great choice for a running mate that is very capable of being president if needed. Can anyone imagine Joe Biden being president ?? One of Rmoney's statements that should make us hunters wonder: "[Romney]... I'm Not Sure What Public Lands Are Good For".

I dare the republican brethren on this list to go for one week to thinkprogress.org and read what's out there all substantiated with videos and references... just a few days.

However, this is the first time I have truly feared for the future of this great nation. I did not vote for the current administration but I hoped we could count on hope and change the President promised. This administration has divided the country even more than than it was in 2008. I do not care that Governor Romney is a Mormon any more than I care that President Obama is Black. The dramatic events brought about by this administration clearly scares the hell out of me. This uncontrolled spending and promising the moon to every special interest group out there cannot continue. Things must change for the better. Our country must be run like a business. Fixing it will not come easy nor will it happen overnight. The out of control spending must stop. A nation cannot be taxed into prosperity. Without getting into an argument I will say that this country adopted a set of laws named the U.S. Constitution over two hundred years ago and it has worked and kept this country strong as free as long as the laws were obeyed. It is when politicians attempt to subvert these laws or get around them that we have problems. Many, many thanks Pat for being bold and speaking the truth. This election is a watershed and the choices could not be further apart in their vision for our future. Everyone will have the opportunity to make a decision where they want our country to go and what kind of future they want for their children and grandchildren. Paul Ryan is a tremendous thinker with a strong background in Jack Kemp style economics. It is incredulous to look at the VP choices alone and not recognize who has vision to lead us forward and dig out of the massively expanding welfare state that Obama has created. Ryan said it so well that we are a free people and we should not have a government that is increasingly controlling our lives . Look at the mountains of regulations and control over our lives that this administration has brought. This is not who we are as a free people! America or France?? I choose America and the land of the free people that we are!! God bless Paul Ryan and may he and Mitt Romney prevail in November!!

If you saw it PM me so I can see it. But this President is going to bankrupt us and I believe that is the plan. I do not mind helping out someone in need and do that. I do believe in conservative principles and God! If you do not earn it you do not get it. Helping someone is to give them a hand up not a hand out. It is up to each and every one of us to take a responsible stand and make sure everyone does something for what they get. I have no desire to work longer and harder so the one that doesn't work gets more! Also my principles that where instilled in me where by my parents while I was a young lad while going to church. Something that alot of people including myself need to do more. But the mainstay of what I learned is in me. You get what you sow.I also do not buy goods from sites or companies that I have a difference with so I hope you keep that in mind guys and gals. Now I go to Chick fillet every weekend. I don't know if Obama is a Christian or not but why does he have to mock those that cling to their guns and their Bibles and mock the Bible about the prohibition for the Jews to not eat shellfish for the sake of their health while wandering through the desert? So from this blog I gathered that Obama is the boogy man and Ryan is a bowhunter... but why then should I vote for Romney? The only positive thing Mr Lafemine had to say about Romney is that he picked Ryan for VP and that doesn't seem like a good enough reason for me to vote for the billionaire that no one seems to like regardless of their political leanings.

I do hope that Mr Lafemine is correct in his assessment of Ryan as a positive image boost for bowhunting. Lord knows some of the images, quotes, and the general "what will he score" vibe on Bowsite gives antihunters plenty of ammunition to shoot at us with. Sure, people should feel comfortable expressing themselves, but a little political tact in this era of the Internet and instant communication would greatly help us convince the 90-some percent of Americans that don't hunt that bowhunting is a legitimate and ethical pastime. It seems like Ryan understands that better than most.

Sportsmen’s conservation groups, largely nonprofits, have always had to rely on the strength of their arguments and access to key -decision--makers to compete with heavily financed industry lobbyists, that have been labeling anyone who supports environmental regulations as a job killer who favors bunnies over humans. In the first 11 months of 2011, oil and gas interests spent $110 million lobbying; electric utilities, $105 million; and real estate, $50 million. With that much money, sportsmen’s groups are wondering how much access will be left over for them.

Brandinus, your attempt to make the comment more egregious than it actually was makes me think that you are auditioning for Debbie Wasserman Schultz' job. ;-)

But here it is.

For those of you inquiring about the feminine Products reference....

Gene Wensel wrote what I consider to be the bible of Trophy Deer hunting called One Man's Whitetail back in the 80's. He talked about using his wife's discarded feminine products along rublines and claimed that they worked wonders during the rut. He was even pleased that they came with a convenient little string for tying to branches. It remains funny as hell to this day - unless you are humorless (like some above).

My satirical comment was that I doubted Obama was going to channel Gene Wensel and use Michelle's feminine products on a rub line. Obviously, very few got the reference so it was perceived as being disrespectful to our First Lady. That was never my intent, so I edited the sentence.

There you have it. Ghastly.

Pat, you mention in your initial post that besides being a nice guy, physically fit, a family man and bowhunter Paul Ryan is "considered a financial expert". This is the same Paul Ryan who as a Congressman voted for 1.6 trillion in un-funded tax cuts, over 800 billion in un-funded Iraq War supplemental funds, 450 billion in un-funded, so-called "Medicare Reform" and more than 700 billion for the un-funded "Wall Street Bail-out". As recently as 2010 he voted to further extend the already mentioned un-funded tax cuts, adding 650 billion more to the National Debt. In 2000 the Republican controlled House of Representatives of which Mr. Ryan was and is a member, along with a Republican controlled Senate and President George W. Bush inherited the largest surplus in American history and promptly turned it into a more than doubling of the National Debt. With all due respect, I submit that Mr. Ryan may be many things but he is certainly not a financial expert and frankly, hardly a "Babe" either. I would add that we can have a never-ending political piss fight accomplishing little but I would much rather this post be judged as to whether it is factual concerning Congressman Ryan or not. What I've listed can be easily verified.

For the record, it's great that Ryan's a bowhunter. That's a plus.

On the minus side, he doesn't act like a bowhunter at all when it comes to policy. He has talked about selling public lands, is for weakening environmental protections & conservation efforts.

He's supposed to be a financial guru, but seems to be bad at math and has a terrible memory, especially concerning committee's he's served on & recommendations made on those committees.

The tax package he and Mittens have offered is really short on substance, and long on promises. Even with the lack of substance, it's clear that the average Joe Bowhunter will pay more in taxes while the rich get an even fatter tax break.

It amazes me that so many people are fooled by the culture wars into voting against their own financial interests, and voting for the benefit of the super-rich.

It also amazes me how far the GOP has drifted from its once noble mission, and become such a sad parody of itself. I'm afraid the GOP wil be irrelevant culturally in a few decades if this keeps up. They can't seem to speak to the concerns of the average person, only to the super-rich. The GOP's approach to elections seems to come back to cultural issues, which more and more people are finding irrelevant as the economy weakens.

Enough said. Let's get back to bowhunting.

Bush in 2000 started with the largest Budget Surplus in U.S. history and turned it into a DOUBLING of the National Debt. Pat's initial post here claims Mr. Ryan is recognized as a "financial expert" yet it is demonstrable that he is anything but, yet he is still offered as the Republican's chief financial guru. Neither the Mormon nor the Catholic Church has been stellar in their separation stance over time. And both candidates on that ticket have demonstrated their support for both mixing their theology with their politics, and their willingness to help overpopulate.

However, on the more immediate and urgent matter of survival until we can possibly develop an electorate with the good sense to agree with me, I support Romney/Ryan as a better choice than the mysterious community organizer from Chicago and his bumbling sidekick.

If the election appears to be remotely close in my state as November approaches, I'll vote Romney/Ryan, and if it looks to be already a done deal here, I'll go with Johnson/Gray on the Libertarian ticket, who hold positions on many more issues that I can agree with completely.

Gentlemen,

This is an extremely important election and here are some irrefutable facts:

We now have a 16 trillion dollar national debt. About 5.4 trillion dollars in debt have been added during Obama's 3.5 years as president. All of the presidents put together up to George W. Bush accumulated 5.7 trillion dollars. George W. did a poor job with the debt as he accrued 4.9 trillion in 8 years as president, but Obama has beat him by 0.5 trillion dollars in just 3.5 years. Therefore, Barack Obama has accrued national debt at more than twice the rate of any other president and has no peer in this regard. Obama pledged to cut the debt by half by the end of his term (you can find the video and audio of this if you don't believe me). In March 2006, as a senator with presidential dreams Obama said the following regarding the debt:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better." Senator Barack Obama

Some of Obama other hypocrisies and broken promises are easy to spot. Obama pledged to close Guantanamo within one year of taking office. Guantanamo still functions as it did. Video and audio of this can be found if you don't believe me.

Obama claimed that no one making under 250 k would see any tax increases. The Affordable Health Care Act will now take effect in 2014 and will be one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history and will raise taxes on the middle class.

His accomplishments are few. Killing Bin Laden was a great one, but would never have been accomplished by Obama if it weren't for the intelligence acquired by interrogation techniques administered under the Bush Administration that Obama has since stopped and called "torture."

The only other major accomplishment that could be construed in a positive light, by some, is the Affordable Care Act. This was forced down the throat of America by the President and a democratically controlled House and Senate despite the fact that about 60% of Americans didn't want it.

It is a shame that this is even a contest. If not for the complicity of the main media outlets, this wouldn't be a contest. It has been said that a free society requires a free media. I think what a free society really needs is a truthful and unbiased media willing to present ALL facts regardless of their own political beliefs. Unfortunately, a lot of people only get selective facts from liberally slanted MSNBC, NBC, ABC and CBS.

We have to take our country back. Time is running out. If you love your kids and grandchildren, you really need to get informed. Romney/Ryan is a far better hope for change!

Now I gotta get to my tree!!!!

Obamacare is going to sink it even further...and if your one of those who is so behind changing the greatest healthcare system in the world than you got another thing coming...

Have you ever been sick...anyone in your family ever needed very important diagnostic care? How about a lifesaving surgery? It's pretty nice knowing that your local hospital has the latest and greatest equipment right? Well get ready for that to end...Hospitals are going to get dinged so hard from goverment penilties that purchasing the most advanced equipment is a way of the past...that lump that your worried might be cancer...lets hope the 4 year old piece of radiology equipment will get it right because your hospital is not going to spend money on new equipment when they are just trying to hit their margins to keep the lights on and the nurses coming to work everyday. And if you thing i'm full of BS remember this post in a few years when your screaming on the phone with whomever you are trying to get appropriate treatment from and they say we have an opening in 2 months come on in. There is a reason leaders of forign countries and the wealthy around the world come here for health care...wait till your guy ruins that to.

And since your making so much money in this era of Obama I guess you don't mind paying more than close to double the price of gas when bush was in office...tell you what feel free to send a little extra cash down here I'm sure you are a big believer in spreading the wealth also.

I think Mr. Ryan will definitely be a star some day. I watched his speech at the convention and thought that he could show a Teddy Roosevelt kind of toughness when the time is right. (But really, who could ever be another Teddy in the full sense?)

However, after all of the Convention-watching and considering various readings, I have to disagree here for one reason. I fear that Mr. Romney may have intentions of sudden and extreme austerity measures to shrink the national deficit, which would have a great chance of sending us back into recession. Then he would be something of a Herbert Hoover. Thusly, I'm reluctant to vote Romney/Ryan.

On the bright side, after watching the speeches from the DNC, I feel the Democratic party is getting the vibe from the rest of us that we don't like spending money for nothing, we worship private enterprise, and when we get back to sustained economic growth we will ramp up demand for fewer government programs and other bloat. I sincerely hope that, should Mr. Obama win another term, they will recognize when it is time to veer to the right.

All this said, I feel like making celebrities out of politicians is part of the problem. I would support a limit on the number of terms congressmen may serve, as well as cutting way back on the benefits they are given. I think it should be clear that if your paycheck comes from any type of governmental entity, you have the Honor that comes with serving, the gratitude of the people, but it is not a lifetime of getting paid to worry about how to get re-elected or a place on Easy St.

This is a good thread. We should all be paying attention to all candidates, reading, watching, listening. Democracy and bowhunting are beautiful things.

John, when you post that this President has "accrued National Debt at more than twice the rate of any other President", you are quite mistaken. In this first 4 year term, the National Debt has increased by 50%, the same rate that it did during George W. Bush's Presidency when the National Debt increased by 100% in eight years. The main difference is that Bush inherited the largest surplus in U.S. history and with a Republican Congress turned it into that doubling of the National Debt. Obama inherited an economy in ruins, the last month of Bush's Presidency for example saw 800,000 jobs lost and the Stock Market had plummeted to 7900 points following the September 2008 melt-down. Notice where the Market is today. No President however has ever come close to Ronald Reagan's record 310% increase in 8 years from 900 billion to over 2.8 trillion dollars of National Debt. That averages 38% every single year of Reagan's Presidency. I know that the Romney/Ryan campaign manager recently stated that their campaign "was not going to be dictated to by fact-checkers" but I would suggest that you check your arithmetic when you return from your tree stand.

From: Mainreezen........ ....... Date: 09-Sep-12

Agree

Jim wright, here is a math lesson for you. I will use Simple numbers for you to make it easier. 50 percent of 10 trillion is 5 trillion. 50 percent of 2 trillion is 1 trillion. So yes, the percentage rate may be the same, but by no means does that mean the actual amount of debt accrued is equal. Go ahead and check it with a calculator if you need to. That fact is Obama has raised the debt more than any other president. Ever. The math is not wrong, bush may have had a similar percentage rate ( I don't know If this is true) but that means nothing as far as how much he actually raised the debt dollars. Which in eight years was less than Obama has done in 3.5. The arithmetic is fine.

Under Bush in 8 years the National Debt rose at (using your words) a RATE of 100%, from 5.25 trillion to 10.5 trillion. For the current President to stay at the same 100% rate of increase the National Debt would in 8 years be 21 trillion. Twice that rate is 42 trillion. For information's sake in order to double Reagan's RATE of Debt increase, the figure rises to 63 trillion, either of which would be an assumption far beyond the ridiculous. Again, I suggest you check your arithmatic and CHECK YOUR OWN POST to see what you actually claimed.

Pat, I agree with most of what you said here. If you reflect upon past candidates with all parties, they always choose the more "L.L. Bean bird hunting outfits", whether it was Cheney or Kerry. I believe bowhunting is the less refined and harder to use as a coverup. The art of pulling an arrow is not something you do just for a photo opportunity. It may not qualify as the litmus test for VP, but it is at least a honest part of the candidate's persona.

I strongly disagree with those who said, bowsite should not allow political topics. This is a very naive position. I would guess that over a third of every thread here has some basis in politics. It is not something that should be passed over. If a commentor chooses to ignore it, that is fine and your position. But just because you choose to ignore, those in politics will always take advantage of your silence. The political topics here range from, license fees, wolf hunting, public access, even product reviews concerning American Made, and countless other areas.

I think the feminie hygiene products comments were nothing but a good example of linking a politician with a humorous hunting joke. Honestly, those who took offense with it are probably some who I would not want to be in a hunting camp with. If you do not find the humour, then you are not stressing the intent of the comments. You can interchange any other public person and the humor is still there. Would the objectors take the same position if it was anybody they do not like.

I got to this thread late, and guess Pat just removed it because it was being taken out of context. So removal was merely so the thread stayed on topic. This move was then used by its detractors as "Pat's admission of guilt" I am glad it was put back into the thread for continuity and because its humorous.

Hell I have even seen people use unused ones as scent hangars because they are cheap and have the readily accessible string.

Having some background in business and finances, I find the discussion on financial topics almost as humorous. I would only ask those with opinions one question, to see if how much their opinion should be weighted. When reviewing a financial spreadsheet; what section do you peruse first; The conclusion, the assumption parameters, or the calculation workpapers between? Agree or disagree with Ryan's numbers, but at least he gives you a complete picture. Its a complete analysis. And its full of very bad news, Nobody likes to hear it, but you either deal with it or pass it on to your successor. And passing a problem along is NOT solving it. Ignoring a problem is NOT solving it.

As a final note, I have never hunted with people; where I did not have opposed positions. How boring would it be if people all shared the same views in a hunting camp.

I guess this should be the final note. I simply lean towards agreement with Pat's statement. Please do not take these comments as a distraction or tangent. Unless you comment is that my comment was entirely too long, and probably would agree with that.

I have made a huge improvment to my 401k by buying the stock in large quanities while it was cheap. I knew Obama would reverse all of Bush's financial blunders. It paid off well. Bush's 2 wars decimated the US economy. It will take yrs to repair it. May as well relax. As far as I'm concerned. president Obama has done a great job considering what he inherited from the Bush Administration."

Obama being given credit for TXT is scary. The decline of TXT was because of the CEO Lewis Campbell and the UAW. Campbell has been rated in the top echilon of negative ceo categories. Like worst performing and most expensive. The new CEO Donnelley took over in 2009. That was a more weighted factor in turnaround, NOT Obama.

Also it is suspicious to that you lament Bush and the wars, but fail to mention all the defense dollar contracts of Textron. Please do not be hypercritical saying the government should not of spending all that money in the wars, when they went in your own pocket. Or are you saying the Textron's defense divisions were not a cashcow for the other under performing divisions? Bell Helicopter and Textron Defense Systems to mention a few.

Lets also mention the Osprey. This is project covered in controversy or should we say infamous.

And lets not pass over the UAW's detrimental affects upon Textron. Or why Campbell's handling of UAW was not a contributing factor of him being rated one of the worst performing. Or should we just review case law?

Or should we blame President Clinton for the demise of Textron stock, because the decline started within Clinton's term.

And lets not disclose Textron's high tech industries, which were devalued with the high tech bubble. Lets fail to be forthcoming.

And lets not passover your ability to purchase stock in Textron............Can we say ESOP and leave it at that.

Obama was the president when the plant ceased all production and was placed on the standby list. The Large SUV production run was completed in December 2008. The plant was still producing medium pickups until april 2009. It was placed on the list of "standby plants" for may 2009. It is true the majority of workers were laid off because of no production need. Similar to when a union goes on strike and part shortages cause production run stoppages. Similiar when a current model line is ended and no retooling takes place.

Was GM waiting for the promised government money for retooling? Who knows, but its clearly documented that the plant was in operation when Obama was President. Or the trucks running around with Jansville production stickers in April 2009 are chinese counterfeits.

@tcook- Union jobs are important because public services are under-appreciated by the free market. I personally think firefighters deserve a decent wage and a retirement in exchange for rescuing people from car wrecks, inhaling toxic smoke, and generally putting it on the line to protect families and businesses. I believe cops should also be compensated for their thankless work keeping our society safe enough for legitimate private sector businesses. Not only would it be unethical to pay cops dirt (they aren't making much anyway) and take away their retirement, but I believe it would open the door to the level of corruption that you see in other countries where, well, they pay their cops dirt. Of course, public servants enjoy helping their communities... even during these times when it seems like no one appreciates it. But the logistics of life demand a certain bit of financial security and if you want good people, you need to provide a live-able wage. Like any bureaucracy, unions have their problems, but they are the political voice for the men and women whose services can't be quantified by the free market. All you need to do is look at history to understand why we have unions and why we still need them. Union reform? Sure, aim for that. Just about everyone who belongs to a union will agree they could be more effective/efficient. However, attacking "union jobs" is short-sighted and insulting to the hardworking men and women who are already poorly compensated for making this country such a safe and pleasant place to live.

What the hell is a working class person. Most of us get up and work everyday of our lives to support our families. But only the Union guys are working class?

Someone define the little guy, working class guy.

That attitude will hopefully be the death of the unions.

This boils down to one thing, you think you are better off with Obama or without Obama. Union guys would not know the difference as they are told if they are better off or not. The rest of us have a decision to make in November. Are you better off than you were before Obama. Really simple.

I learned a long time ago that unions are a great "idea" ....but a very poor design --- they allow folks to never be fired, other folks to never be hired, guaranteed job security regardless of of your usefulness or UN-usefulness. My wife is a teacher. I'm proud of her -- but not proud of the union background. Some union folks are good people, but the overall union ideal takes away the basic idea of capitalism in the workplace --- produce or you lose. The cream floats to the top. My own interests? Typical liberal response. What's best for "me" and "my" interests. Not what's best for the country as a whole. It appears that almost all the "pink" responders here are of that mindset. Look at "my" boat, "my" motorcycle, help "me" the working man, who's looking at for "me." Liberals are selfish and always have been. They would cut down the entire forest just to save their favorite tree. Much like some union members who care nothing for the company that pays their check as long as they get "theirs." Funny how Nissan and Toyota keep rolling along with their non-union employees in right to work states while GM, Chrysler, and to some extent, Ford, battle just to stay in the black. It's not the first time the so called Big 3 have gotten into trouble and it won't be the last. Our pandering president recognizes this selfish liberal mindset and targets each group with freebie promises. He has specifically targeted gays, women, latinos, etc. with special "gifts" in order to secure their support and votes. He has dodged his woeful economic record at every turn and deflected the discussion back to social issues where he thinks he has an advantage. The federal government has one mandate and that is national security. It has no business involving itself and taxpayer dollars in the social arena. The federal government should be small and efficient and utilize national tax dollars to strengthen the military and protect our nation. The best thing the federal govt. can do for the economy and business is to get out of the way and let capitalism and competition (that which built this nation) lead the way. This president inherited the bad economy you say? Then why did he do nothing about it when he and his party controlled congress and the executive branch? Instead of attacking the problems of the poor economy he chose to ram thru a national health care plan that he has no way of paying for other than robbing Medicare and increasing taxes on everyone. If you don't have health care you will be penalized just under $700 for your trouble. So the economy is failing and he focuses on nonsense. Passed the stimulus you say? Yes, and after the stimulus money ran out GM declared bankruptcy anyway. Something they should have done initially which would have netted the same result and circumstances that they are in now but saved the taxpayers millions. In short, this president is inept. He cannot speak without a teleprompter and actually used a teleprompter when he spoke to a 2d grade elementary class. Unbelievable. By his own admission this president smoked as much dope as he could afford in college and used harder drugs if they were available. By his own admission he skipped classes and spent most of his time reading/following socialist issues. This is not heresay or hard right rhetoric, this is our president in his own words. He has never held a job of any type other than teaching constitutional law. He has never run any type of business or served in the military. In the short two years he served as senator he abstained from voting nearly 50% of the time and never voted on any bill which was controversial. As president he has attended only 44% of his daily security briefings (something all previous presidents rarely missed). Again, this president is inept. He doesn't know how to do anything other than campaign and he certainly doesn't know anything about how America was built. Sadly, we are becoming Greece. No one cares about the country as long as they can get theirs. It doesn't matter if there is no money I want paid. There was a democratic party that would never tolerate this liberal "me, me, me" mindset. Sadly, it has been consumed by the far left and I fear it may never return. There was a democratic president that once said, "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Where are these democrats?

It is about keeping the country from imploding due to escalating debt (4 billion added per day). Our debt is larger than every country in Europe's GDP. Your president has accounted for fully 1/3 of the entire debt and has no plan to reduce it. As Americans we should support those who would address the debt and the economy and leave the fringe nonsense for better times when and if we survive and stabilize.

This is not time for small mindedness and being diverted by issues that have no relevance right now. Our credit has been downgraded for the first time in history and we have fallen to number seven in the world in economic viability. They are trying to buy this election on the backs of our future generations. We are trapped, they cant raise interest rates to slow inflation, because they cant pay the intrest on the debt if they do. We are screwed and thats plain and simple.

The tax payers bailed out GM, and they still are, with the government entities buying up the expensive piece of crap volt. Unions have long outlived their usefullness. House GOP Votes To Transfer Tens Of Thousands Of Acres Of Minnesota Public Lands To The State For Sulfide Mining

(http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/09/13/839031/house-gop-votes-to-transfer-tens-of-thousands-of-acres-of-minnesota-public-lands-to-the-state-for-sulfide-mining/)

Some quotes:

Yesterday (Sep 13) the House of Representatives voted 225-189 to pass a bill authorizing a controversial land transfer that would almost certainly result in the mining of public lands in Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. These lands have numerous other values like hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and recreation.

As the Minneapolis Star Tribune editorialized: " This land swap isn’t about Minnesota’s hard-pressed schoolchildren. It’s about converting forest land to mining."

A number of sportsmen groups are opposed to the bill because mining by its very nature blocks access to prime wildlife habitat and hunting and fishing. As David Lien of the group Minnesota Backcountry Hunters and Anglers wrote:

Over 100 years ago, Teddy Roosevelt proclaimed the Superior National Forest as a place “reserved from settlement” and “set apart as a public reservation, for the use and benefit of the people.” If HR 5544 passes, that will no longer be the case for 86,000 acres of public lands in the [Superior National Forest].

... but I guess as some mentioned in earlier posts we should put "our own interests aside for those of the greater good..." I wonder who stands to gain most from these transactions, the community or the mining business?

Going back to the mountains tonight the Elk are bugling ...

So while the elk and public lands are still there...

To post something from the left leaning "Think Progress" group and then "cherry pick" the parts of this particular bill in an attempt to politicize and demonize Republicans is typical liberal white wash. This bill calls for a direct swap between Minnesota and the Federal government for some 80,000 acres. The state would get from the Feds what they want and the Feds would get the same amount of acreage elsewhere. The bill was introduced at the request of the state so if you have a problem contact the governor. If the state chooses to mine the newly acquired acreage then it would be within their purview to do so. Maybe they're thinking about the copper and nickel resources there and the new jobs that such a mining operation would bring to the state. God knows they could use them. Maybe they won't do any mining there at all. Regardless, the land is within the borders of Minnesota and I see no problem in letting Minnesotans decide how they will manage and utilize their own properties. This issue is completely irrelevant to the presidential race and is just another diversionary tactic designed to draw attention away from the president's horrible economic policies.

I prefer a dose of hard realism of Romney rather than the fake optimism of Obama.

Romney knows the truth about this country, and he represents it: If you have money, you matter, and society can and should cater to you. If you don't have money, and can't or don't have the means to getreal money, folks, $200k or better per year, as he said recently, then you don't deserve any rights. Poor people are simply assets that the rich manipulate. The lower class is simply cannon fodder for a consumer society, nothing more. They are "natural resources" for the rich to exploit. They need to understand that, it will make the next 15 years a lot less painful for everyone if they'd just understand and accept this simple fact that has been true since the dawn of civilization."

Rubbish! Who is this "honest conservation?" Let me guess, first name "Figment" last name "Imagination" or "Left Wing" and "Loon."

Obama has been playing a shell game for four years and somehow liberals actually believe there is a "magic" pea under his empty shells. The truth is those shells are as empty as his rhetoric. My how he can turn a phrase and the intellectually challenged swoon. His mission to fundamentally change America is nothing more than a veiled attempt to socialize everything and move the power from the American citizen to a centralized, liberal government. The war on the wealthy only feeds the wealth envious to begin with and creates an artificial and manufactured target for their anger. Everyone who is down and out needs someone to be mad out so Obama has given it to them, the wealthy. He has fabricated an imaginary conservative war on everything; wealth, women, homosexuals, hispanics, etc. and his followers have swallowed it hook, line, and sinker. All of this is simply a diversion to turn the debate away from his pitiful record. While his big plan to raise taxes on what he defines as the wealthy sounds good to the down trodden the fact is that if it were implemented today it would only generate 40 billion in revenue. Since he is accruing debt at the rate of 4 billion per day his big attack on American wealth and the monies it would produce would be eaten up in new debt in only ten days. Great Plan!

To improve America opportunities, not handouts are required. If every single American were to create a flow chart of his/her life beginning with high school and ending with where you are today you would all see that as an individual you are exactly where you should be based upon the number of opportunities you were given and your ability to act on those opportunities when they arose. The appearance of those opportunities represent decision points in your life and when presented what did you do? Your intellect, initiative, motivation, etc. all played a part in where you are now based upon how you handled any and all opportunities you had. If you knocked up your girlfriend in high school, started using drugs and alcohol, skipped class, etc. then your station in life will reflect those decisions. If you attended class, played sports, participated in extra curricular activities, etc. then the same. Intellect, drive/determination plus opportunity equals success. You cannot blame others for your station in life. If you are not happy with it then work to change it but do not look to this government to artificially create an environment whereby the less fortunate are given advantage by diminishing others. That's not American but it certainly is liberal thinking.

It's understandable that some people may support a candidate who believes in giving money to people who don’t work for it, and won’t work for it. So why even require someone like this to even look for work? After all, it’s easy to just print more money. What does it matter that it debases the savings of those who did work for it? More money can be printed to take care of them, too. Making everyone mediocre is the only fair thing to do. How can anyone take exception to a person who declares “executive privilege” to take the heat off Mr. Holder for withholding evidence in a failed plan that was only intended to stop the flow of guns into criminal hands? Or was that to stop the flow of firearms into the hands of honest, law abiding citizens as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights? Well, it really doesn’t matter if this was the actual intent since this would make us more like the rest of the world. There are way too many guns in civilian hands anyways.

And we all drive trucks and cars, right? Why in the world would anyone complain when our tax dollars were used to support American companies that were ineptly managed for decades, hamstrung by economically unsupportable union demands that were acquiesced to when times were good? Why rock the boat, America really has no competition for cars and trucks, do we? Status quo all the way!

Can anyone complain about giving folks illegally in the county the ability to vote? Or deny giving people the ability to vote without proving who they are? How else can we expect certain people to be able to vote at all, or vote multiple times? Some candidates need these voting groups to stay viable, so please hold your criticisms. If you object, you are just being mean spirited.

The preceding issues are wide open for differences of opinion and debate. This is what makes our country so great: the right to look at the facts and arrive at totally nonsensical conclusions.

No, fellow Bowsiters, I must base my support of the Romney/Ryan ticket on something not based on man’s theories, but on God’s command: You shall not commit murder. Candidates who believe that a child can be ripped from its mother’s womb, or even delivered to the point that only its head remains in its mother before it’s murdered by having his or her brains sucked out, can never have my support.

Candidates and elected officials who support murdering unborn children, plus those who vote for them, will someday stand accountable before Almighty God. For those of you who have read this to the end, you have no excuse. You have been warned.

Pete...your very comment highlights brilliantly what is wrong with you and your party. You place self over country. You can clearly see that in literally every pink posting. "What's in it for me" should be the Dems slogan as it seems that it all you and yours are worried about. For me I will always speak out for what I think is best for our overall country, livelihood be damned. To think I would calculate commentary based on how it would affect my wallet is typical liberal thinking. That's why this president is pandering to almost every group individually and not offering any overall plan for the country. He has offered political favors to any special interest group that he believes will help him win the election; women, homosexuals, hispanics, campaign bundlers, etc.

Obama is a brilliant campaigner but a lousy chief executive. Vote him out!

The man was either in the woods and had no idea what he was hunting ( I have no respect for that) or he is full of it. Probably both. 50% more people on foodstamps, one in seven Americans. Average income dropping, $4000 less now than four years ago, debt increasing by 4 billion per day, half of Americans paying taxes while the other half pay nothing and somebody thinks whether Romney was hunting elk or moose is that point on which the election should be predicated. Unbelievable! The difference between conservatives and liberals? Conservatives believe everyone should pull the wagon while libs believe everyone should ride.

I like Paul Ryan and think he was an excellent choice. I wish he had been the numero uno candidate.

Truth is though this country needs more than a decent canidate for vice president or president. Our problems lie much deeper than that. It's like putting a bandaid on a severed arm.

"If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" God

Wondering if any Romney/Ryan supporters have changed their position now that you know Romney doesn't care about 47% of Americans. He said, "My job is is not to worry about those people."

I disagree -- I think the President's job is to represent and advance my interests and those of all Americans, regardless of income level. Any disabled veterans out there? Anyone who is retired? Anyone who prefers to hunt and grow thier food, rather than earn a salary to buy it? Just a few examples of the kind of people Romney doesn't care about.

It's also interesting that Romney forgot to note in his "off the cuff" discussion of 'dependency' that few people in America are more dependent on federal welfare than Mitt Romney. The tax preferences that have made an order-of-magnitude difference in the present-day size of Mitt Romney's personal fortune — lower taxes on capital gains, allowing management fees to be taxed as a 'carried interest' at the capital gains rate, taxation of Bain-related retirement income at the capital gains rate (as if he was still an active partner) instead of at the nominal rate for retirement income, favorable valuation of stock contributions to his IRA account (at 'par' rather than 'market' value), etc. -- are referred to, in the world of federal fiscal policy, as 'tax expenditures,' and Romney has enriched himself with those tax expenditures, at the direct expense of other taxpayers who have had to make up the difference or as a direct addition to deficit spending, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Romney is the poster child for dependency on federal spending.

Under Ryan's proposed budget, Romeny's tax burden would be even lower. Would that kind of policy be good for most Americans, or only the richest? Hmmm...

Anyway, Romney's campaign "jumped the shark" when he trash talked nearly half of all voters. Bad strategy if your objective is to win popular election. So, game over, four more years of Obama.

Some would say that this website also "jumped the shark" when it strayed from its purpose (bowhunting) and starting posting polemical political propoganda. But Pat isn't participating in a democratic process and trying to appeal to voters. I agree with those who say this is his site and he can say whatever he wants here. The consequences (if any -- perhaps less traffic, fewer advertisers, more hate mail, etc) are Pat's alone.

Just my two cents. Regardless of your political position, good luck to all this hunting season.

"That is what makes our free enterprise system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants. But under our modern government regulations, the productive workers must divide the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy and idle." She never again baked bread because she joined the 'party' and got her bread free. All the Democrats smiled. 'Fairness' had been established. Individual initiative had died but nobody noticed; perhaps no one cared so long as there was free bread that 'the rich' were paying for. EPILOGUE Bill Clinton is getting $12 million for his memoirs. I don't think he's hiding his returns because he has visibly broken the law, I think he is hiding them because the 'regular Joes' out there would resent the fact that they pay more taxes than Mitt does - if he pays any at all.

And to envy wealthy people you have to think money is what life is all about. I don't - do you? My issue is not with wealth - it's with openness. Once when he initially made it and again now that he's investing it. I guess a "regular joe" like yourself doesn't understand how that works but capital gains taxes are low and actually could stand to be lowered to encourage more investing not less. You understand that people like Romney invest their own money while our economically challenged president can only invest everyone else's. Actually your childish assumptions about Mitt Romney speak volumes about you. In 2011 he made 13.7 million in investment returns and paid 2 million in taxes for an effective rate of 14.1%. His charitable donations were 4 million dollars and he only claimed half off his taxes. So the man gives nearly 1/3 of his income in one year to charity and only claims half of it back. Additionally, and I hope you are reading this, in an independent letter released by Price-Waterhouse who reviewed the Romney's returns for the past 20 years, Mitt and Anne Romney owed both federal and state income taxes for the entire twenty years and have paid 100% of all taxes owed with an average tax rate of 20%. "Mitt and Anne Romney owed both federal and state income taxes for the entire twenty years and have paid 100% of all taxes owed with an average tax rate of 20%."

Sorry, but while you're trying to put the best spin on it, it just don't float. An "Average tax rate" over 20 years doesn't mean that he necessarily paid more than 20% in any more than one year. And it doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't pay more than $1 for several years.

And we all know that "income" can be manipulated in many ways - including donations to your chosen charities. If he gave 4 mil to charity and only claimed half of it, one might think he didn't even need to claim any more - that his taxes were already near zero. If you depreciate or invest, your on paper income can be $20 and you pay $4 in taxes at 20%.

The bottom line is he's embarrassed to disclose his tax returns over the last 5 years. That would solve the issue. But he won't. And that speaks volumes about him. The guy wants to manage the national economy, is running on economic management issues, and won't show us how he has managed his own economy. If he was a democrat, you'd be screaming bloody murder.

" For the record, Romney's 2011 return was released today and is available for drones like you,"

That's hardly news - he's been promising to do that "soon" for months. I would certainly imagine that the return he has constructed since deciding to run for President would look pretty good.

From: Catfish........ ....... Date: 21-Sep-12

"And now," as Paul Harvey used to say, "here is the rest of the story":

"Mr. Romney has said that he has paid at least 13 percent in federal income taxes in each of the last 10 years.

"In order for that claim to be true in 2011, Mr. Romney had to voluntarily take a smaller deduction than he was entitled to for his charitable deductions, his advisers said Friday.

"Mr. Romney and his wife, Ann, donated about $4 million to charity in 2011, but claimed only $2.25 million as a deduction. The campaign said that Mr. Romney’s tax liability would have been far lower in 2011 had the Romneys claimed the full deduction for their charitable contributions.

"“The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the governor’s statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13 percent in income taxes in each of the last 10 years,” said R. Bradford Malt, Mr. Romney’s trustee.

"It is possible, however, that Mr. Romney could still deduct the unclaimed amount of his charitable donations in future tax years, experts said."

So he didn't keep from claiming all his charitable deductions - what a nice guy! Unless he couldn't because it would put him in a lie about that 13%. Oh, and he can still claim it next year! What a charade.

I personally think that if OB wins he will certainly approve more liberal judges, a fact that a lot of people do not think about when voting, and he will be able to shove every agenda "Big Money" has on there own plate. So if you know who supports him then you know what is on their plate. Once back in, he will be able to satisfy every liberal need. Free range is what he will be able to do. Well done Pat. It is scary that no one is willing to stand up and say what they believe anymore and support a candidate that shares those beliefs. Fireman, you need to check your history facts relating to the Republican Party before you cover them with a blanket statement.

But guys usually people who talk the way he has really doesn't know anything about our country, constitution, or our founding fore fathers. And on the issue he commented on about the reason we don't like Obama is because he is black and a muslim. He sure isn't a Christian, to be a Christain means to be Christ like, so basicly he is calling us racist. On the other hand the majority of black and latino race vote for Obama just because he is black. That too is racist. But sleepyhunter probably falls into one of the two mentioned groups black or latino.

It's About Liberty, and You're Not Stupid Dave Carter · November 3, 2012 at 9:49pm

In a letter to Edmund Penndleton in 1792, James Madison anticipated Barack Obama's fundamental transformation of America, correctly identifying it for what it really is:

"If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare, and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare, they may take the care of religion into their own hands; they may appoint teachers in every State, county and parish and pay them out of their public treasury; they may take into their own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union; they may assume the provision of the poor; they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads; in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress. Were the power of Congress to be established in the latitude contended for, it would subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature of the limited Government established by the people of America."

The systematic violation of Constitutional limits on federal power is neither hope nor change, but rather the subversion of American law and a declaration of war on the individual citizen. To say,as the President of the United States did of Congress, a little over a year ago that, "Where they won't act, I will," is to announce the seizure of legislative power and the brazen violation of his own oath of office. From unilaterally violating federal immigration law, to defying a court order to resume oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, to illegally taking upon himself the power to declare Congress in recess, to commanding private citizens to enter into contracts against their will, to reaching into federal welfare reform law and removing requirements he found objectionable, he has undertaken intrusions into the private lives of a free people that make George III look like an amateur.

His government prescribes the content of our food, and the size and type of plumbing in our toilets and showers. They dictate what we can and cannot do with a puddle of water on our property, and even presume to intrude into our healthcare and thus into matters of our life and death. They swallow up private businesses under the guise of helping them, and distribute the bounty to cronies and union bosses. They choose which industries to favor (solar) and which to disfavor (coal), with the predictable result being that both fail. All this and more will be yours, your children's and your grandchildren's, for the bargain basement price of a mere $16,000,000,000,000.00 (before interest), along with enough regulations to sink the Queen Mary.

And when I say "all this and more," I'm not just whistling Dixie or old Barbara Streisand songs. Because the National Federation of Independent Businesses estimates that there are over $515,000,000,000 in shiny new regulations waiting in the wings until after the election; regulations ranging from fresh assaults on the coal industry to Labor Department rules that will increase the cost of retirement planning, to Department of Transportation requirements for rear view cameras and airplane-style "black boxes" in cars and trucks. These are just estimates, of course, because the President is yet again violating federal law that requires him to submit his regulatory agenda to Congress. Even Bill Clinton had the sense to follow the law in this regard, but not Barack Obama, the most transparent president in history. Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise before the election now, would we?

And what do we get in return for the progressive's bloated, benighted, birdbrained, and buffoonish bureaucracy? Look no further than that great laboratory and breeding ground of American liberalism, the American Northeast, where millions have acquired a docility and servitude toward, and dependence upon, omnipotent government. For generations, they've reliably voted for the most paternalistic sounding politicians this side of the Kremlin and, now that disaster has struck, they learn that daddy government is a deadbeat. Those who thought it was someone else's responsibility to take care of them are now unable to take care of themselves.

People who mocked Mitt Romney for collecting canned goods and useful items when the Red Cross asked for money are now incredulous that the Red Cross hands out cookies and hot chocolate instead of real food and blankets. In the meantime, hurricane victims forage for food from dumpsters. People who can find no place to bathe or use the bathroom now relieve themselves in hallways. (Side Note: Welcome to the world of the trucker in the northeast, where facilities for semi drivers are rare, we are not allowed to idle our trucks to stay warm in the winter, and life on the road becomes an animalistic existence. Stinks, doesn't it?) Tempers are rising, as are the waiting lines for fuel.

For their part, liberal politicians promise to remove those government obstacles that slow or prohibit relief, thereby conceding the conservative argument for smaller government and begging the question of why those obstacles were there in the first place. The answer, of course, is that it keeps the politicians employed and the people dependent. But when it all unravels and the folly is exposed, it is the individual citizen who bears the brunt of the calamity, while the politician boards his aircraft and retreats into the sunset. The region's essential nature remains unchanged, however, as work crews from other parts of the country make the unenviable trek north to offer assistance only to be turned away because they are non-union workers. Anyone who votes for that sort of madness deserves what they get. Good King Barack

The question is, does the rest of the country deserve it? And what are we to make of a President who sees no moral prohibition against forcibly seizing whatever portion of an individual's property he views as necessary to finance his utopian projects; who routinely violates the law and yet expects the rest of us to abide by the volumes of laws and rules his leviathan administration hurls in our direction; who spends more time on the golf course than in intelligence briefings; who has taken more vacations in one term than many of us take in a lifetime; and who rails against "fat cats" while taking his family on lavish trips in separate jets at our expense? Are we actually to believe that he relates to us? What are we to make of a Commander-in-Chief who tells victims of the hurricane that we leave no one behind, when he very specifically abandoned Americans under terrorist attack in Benghazi and refuses to tell the truth about it? Answer: That he is perhaps the worst Commander-in-Chief in American history.

And how does Barack Obama answer? By playing adolescent word games with his opponent's last name, and describing such ideas as are contained in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as, "the failed policies of the past." Somewhere, a third rate banana republic is missing its dictator. Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the President Benny Johnson raises his party's dialogue by saying, "Let's win this mother [expletive]"; the reverend who gave the benediction at President Obama's inauguration reconsiders his position and decides that all white people are indeed going to hell; and Ambassador of Liberal Tolerance Bill Maher warns Americans that, "Black people know who you are and they will come after you." Thus do progressives who fashion themselves as the smartest in the room continue to vulgarize the discourse and debase the culture.

This election, certainly the most significant in our lifetime, is not about "revenge," as the President so boorishly announced, nor is it about moronic thugs holding their pants up long enough to threaten riots. It's about 9,000 coal mining jobs lost in the last month alone. It's about 48 million people on food stamps, and 23 million people unemployed. It's about a work force that is smaller now than when Barack Obama was inaugurated. It's about a 14.3 percent unemployment rate in the black community. It's about a new IRS requirement that will take effect in 2014, requiring all taxpayers, in the words of sworn testimony, to, "… file their tax returns reporting their health insurance coverage, and/or making a payment." It's about the evisceration of our national defense and, in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack, troops who no longer trust their Commander-in-Chief.

It is ultimately a referendum on us, and it's about what kind of country our children and grandchildren will inherit. It's about whether they will be free men and women -- freedom here being defined differently than the progressive's definition, which stipulates that one must be freed from want or fear through the dictates of centralized planners. History, however, shows that the only path to liberation from want or fear is the path of individual sovereignty. Those in the Northeast who chose the liberal path now go hungry, and cold, and fearful, while their government masters flail about, desperately seeking to free the private sector from the onerous rules and obstacles that they imposed.

We see now what the Founders knew over two centuries ago; that free people and free markets are the surest means to freedom from want and fear, and that centralized government control over a nation is the surest path to despair, want, fear, and servitude. It's about Liberty. It's about We the People, endowed with unalienable rights, being the masters of our lives and our government instead of the other way around. It's time to reclaim the American ideal.

Ryan is a great guy, would make a better president than Romney. I really like him. With that said, on the morning he was announced, I wrote a long letter to several media outlets explaining how Romney's choice of Ryan will cost the Republicans the election. Well, I TOLD YOU SO. Rubio would have delivered Florida. Rubio would have delivered much more non-Cuban Hispanic votes(Cuban-Americans already vote Republican because they are fearful of socialism.) Lastly, Rubio would have delivered more women. Just the way it is, we have a very ignorant electorate, and unfortunately you must use strategy when making VP choices not just principles any more. Maybe after four more years of suffering, the majority of America will finally come around in 2016 and deliver candidates that can acutally win elections and save what is left of this great country.

If you feel a sermon coming on, save it. Corporations are not people, and while they do create jobs, they don't deserve to be worshipped.

A lot of commenters on this thread would do well to go back & read the bible, especially the parts where Jesus talks about helping the poor, paying taxes, and not being arrogant.

The best the Republicans can hope for going-forward is to control the Senate and House, which is very doable given the electoral map. But they can't run idiots in key races and do that.

Like my friend Adventurewriter said recently, voters want to hear about what they, personally, can get. As soon as a candidate starts talking about fiscal responsibility, debt, deficits, etc.., within 15 seconds everybody is looking at their phones. Pat,

Are we to believe (your post/rationale) that if Jesus, were a non hunter, and the Devil, was a bow-hunter then we should vote for the Devil ?

More importantly as the saying goes,

"The Devil is in the details"

Therefore if you are a senior citizen or soon to be one, or a person of less income or means or under age 55 then there is a lot of the Devil, in Paul Ryans, plans.

I for one don't buy into his thinly veiled proposals, his views, or his legislation.

Nor do I buy into the proposal that simply because someone bow-hunts or is a hunter, or trapper this automatically makes them good candidate or a good person !

Just look at the slob hunter, poacher, or the trespassing hunter etc.

I learned a long time ago, what makes this country great is independent thinkers.

We should not allow ourselves to succumb to demagoguery or to simply follow along as a herd of sheep !
