Man,
That is too bad. Unfortunately though, when you spend the sort of time flying in and out of difficult locations that they do this is going to happen.
michael

here is a picture of Jake Wiebe(the guide that perished) and myself with a Nahanni dall. My heart goes out to Jake's wife and children.

This photo was taken inside the helicopter that crashed. Jake in the back seat and the pilot Barry (who somehow survived the crash and should fully recover) laughing at me as I attempt to fly.
such a bummer... i heard about this shortly after it happened. Ive hunted with jake a couple times. hell of a guy and guide. I was supposed to meet up with him again this fall. sooo unfortunate. my heart and prayers goes out to the families involved... RIP Jake! see ya on the other side brother!

Richie,
That is terrible news…… I took my Dall sheep with Jake back in 2003. Jake and I had a great time that week hunting sheep. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jake’s wife and children….. What a tragedy.

Very sad news.
TIPTON, Iowa - For the second time in three years, the Behrle family of Tipton has been struck by tragedy in a far-off place.
Authorities say 55-year-old Johnnie Behrle of Tipton and Columbus, Neb., died Tuesday in a helicopter crash in a remote part of Canada's Northwest Territories.
Behrle was the father of 20-year-old Spc. David Behrle, who was killed in May 2007 by a roadside bomb in Iraq.
According to Canada's Edmonton Journal, the helicopter crashed into an Arctic mountain range near Nahanni Butte. Behrle, an avid sportsman, was on a hunting trip with a company that led 10-day backpacking trips into remote areas.
------
Archery hunted Nahanni in 2005. Had a few extra days in camp after getting my sheep and got to spend time with Jake(guide)cooking some sheep backstraps and playing cards with Barry(pilot)and his wife and son who were in camp. What extraordinary folks! When you spend time in these remote areas and camps with people like this we are all humbled and appreciative of thier efforts. Prayers out to all as well as the Iowa hunter! The last few years have been very hard on these folks. I don't know how they contunue, so young and all with families! THEY LOVE WHAT THEY DO!Charlie

A patient and friend was in the other day, talking about his hunting friend who died in a crash in the NWT a couple days ago. He lived about 20 minutes from where I am typing this and I didn't understand until I saw this post. So sad and my prayers are with them and their families. Sad day.

Devastating. We've hunted with Cam, until we were called two days after the accident last year to cancel our caribou hunt. Had time during earlier hunts to get to know both Jake and Barry. And now we're supposed to leave Wednesday to hunt moose with Stan Lancaster in the Yukon Territory. Don't know when the funeral will be or what's going to happen, but we feel so horrible for the whole Lancaster group, family and friends alike. By the way, I understand that Barry barely survived and lost a leg and a great deal of blood.

Jake hunted muleys and pronghorn with my guide Blaine in our south zone last year . He took a couple of really nice trophies and Blaine always enjoyed his company. This is a real tragedy. There is only so many really great guides in the industry and now we've lost another one. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these fine people.

absolutly devastating and terrible, all the prayers go out to jakes family and the hunters family.

Here are a couple of pics from my hunt with Jake 4 or 5 days before the crash.I shot my sheep on day 2 and had a great time with everyone in camp.Jake was a great guide Who loved his family and hunting.I am thankful for the time I got to spend with him.My prayers are with all.

Jake and Barry just before we flew back to camp.
Just heard about this. Prayers for all that are involved. I never hunted with Jake but sure enjoyed his company in camp. He was always very supportive. I feel fortunate to have flown with Barry a few times and can say he is an awesome pilot. In fact, I remember those flights almost every day and they always bring a smile to my face. I hope Jim and Clay are OK. I wish I was there to help in some way. The Lancaster's are awesome people. Ned

Wow! The Lancaster's have been through so much lately. I hunted with them at Nahanni Butte twice. I was hunting with Clay and Cam in 2004 when we got the news that Bob Fontana, their parnter, had been killed in Africa by a Cape Buffalo. I had hunted elk with Bob in BC. Then the next year their fixed wing pilot was killed when his plane went down in a lake while flying out gear at the end of the hunting season.
Then last year when I heard that Clay had been killed in a crash I couldn't believe it.
I have flown with Barry a number of times and so has my wife Julie. I have also visited him at his house. He loved flying that helicopter. He's not only a great pilot, but a terrific guy. I wish him the very best, and pray for a full recovery.
I have been around Jake at hunting lodge. He was a super guy. You couldn't meet a more friendly guy, and very, very helpful. My thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family, and his friends. The Lancaster's treated Jake like one of the family. May God always Bless you Jake and your family.

Wow!! I am Heart Broke for Jake's Family! I hunted with Jake in Cranbrook and he started me off on the Road to the Grand Slam. I killed a great Rocky with him on the face of the Steeples and I became a close friend of his. This news was quite the blow to me and I wish his Family and specifically his father the best.
Jake, You will be missed by many and your contribution to all of us that had the opportunity hunt with you and get to know who you were will stand with us all for the rest of our days. I never met a guide or an outdoor enthusiast that loved the outdoors like Jake Weibe. As you look down on us with the hunting gods, I say to you, thanks for all the memories as there is no place like hunting sheep with a guy like you! I wish that my son's had the opportunity to know you but I will remember you and pass on the stories I have with you to them! May you Rest in Peace!

Jake was my uncle. He was an extraordinary man, uncle and father. Its hit our family extremely hard but we are getting through it. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. Zeke
Thanks for the kind words Tim. The Lancaster's are actually Jake's cousins and mine too. Nahanni Butte is all family and friends owned and operated.
