I would like to have your input on how you would hunt during that time period, is calling effective ? is cow call better then bull call again during that time ? with alot of leaves now on the ground, it is very crunchy with every steps. I plan to go out from oct. 27 to oct. 31

Your feed back is very appreciated.

Thank you

Forget calling at this point. Once you get to this time of year either a cow call or grunt will just warn any half intelligent moose that a hunter is close. Once you get into mid October or later bulls, particularly mature bulls seem to spend about a month in the dirtiest heaviest cover available feeding and resting. Focus on spot and stalk, and if you get some snow walk the thick stuff, cut a track and try to make a play. Not sure how your season runs, but once you get into cold wintery weather the bulls often group up and seem to come out of hiding and really move. Good luck.

Now I would call, cow estrus calls will still work wonders as there are always more then one rut, and your timing near the end of Oct would put you in good timing for the second rut. Cow’s that haven’t been bred in the first rut will come into estrus 25-27 days later. There is still a later rut when the early born calves of spring will often come into rut in late November early December time frame.

Moose are extremely vocal animals and can be called effectively all year round. I’ve had bulls come in faster and more aggressive in December then during the first rut.

Moose do become educated to calls and the later into the season you go, the less errors you can make with your calls.

I’ve personally called moose every month of the year. Check out Newfoundland summer vacation pictures I posted here. Many of the moose in these pictures I called in 1st 3 weeks of July this summer. Some summers I’ve called in as many as 65 moose in July. Many of the moose in these pictures I’ve called into 10-15 yards. Some took a while to call in others responded well to the calls right away. Some wouldn’t come to the calls but allowed me to walk upon them while calling.

You may want to try a couple things. There is a possibility that some of the cows may be coming into estrous late? A cow call can be heard about a mile or more while bull grunts can't be heard at very long distance....obviously if it is windy that will change things! Just like moose hunting any time of the year you need to cover lots of country to find them!

Thank you for the replies Gents, the weather man is calling for snow and low of around -5 Celsius here in Alberta.

With snow on the ground would make it exiting, cut a track and let the game begin.
