Newfoundland Moose 2013
Moose
Contributors to this thread:
I saw a thread like this last year and it was quite enjoyable. So I thought I would start it off this year.
I finally pulled the trigger on a newfie moose hunt. I'll be hunting the last week of Sept. with Grey River Lodge through Mark at BSC.
Deposit is in, hotel booked. I will be flying although I haven't booked the flights yet. Looking forward to the adventure.
Who else is headed up this year?
Congrats on hunting with Tony @ Grey River Lodge. My son and I got nice caribou with Tony a couple years ago. Goodluck, Mike
Thanks Mike. No caribou tag for me unfortunately. So hopefully the moose cooperate.
I'm going to on my first Newfie moose hunt w/ BerksArcher Sept 20-27, with Effords Hunting Adventures. We are driving up from South Jersey and taking the ferry over and then doing a fly in trip. No caribou tag and I'm hunting spring bear in Manitoba, so I don't think I'll get a bear tag. Good luck!
Woo, I've heard good things about Efford as well. He is one of the outfits I was considering. Good luck!
I'm heading to Ironbound. Can't wait to get back. Loved my first trip.
Caribou I drove from Boston and its a long drive but beautiful. I'm flying this time.
Mountainman, you can't be too detailed in your planning. I'll be looking for updates intently. We booked for 2014, so any info you put down would be great. I'll be flying also but my dad and his buddy are driving, which is awesome for me cause they are taking most of my gear and hopefull bringing my moose back. Any trip advise, gear, planning you are doing I'd love to hear about. Good luck!
tommy, no problem. I'll give updates as things progress. Your booked with Grey River also?
Right now I'm in the process of deciding what head to use and figuring out how I want to bump my arrow weight up some from my whitetail rig. Leaning toward a 150 grn VPA 3 blade. Going to get some and make sure they fly good with my set up.
I'm new to bowsite. Thought I would share in this thread. I've taken a number of trips to Newfoundland hunting with Conne River Outfitting. Made friends there so I keep going back. Caribou Woo, I have heard good things about Effords - good choice. Mountainman, be prepared for shots at a distance and in wind. FYI, I use a heavy arrow (2317 aluminum) and 125 grain fixed blade broadhead. The heavy arrow works well in the wind and for penetration through thick hide of a moose.
I am doing a caribou/moose combo hunt in October with Ray's. Can't wait.
LWood, Ray has a great lodge and hunts in one of the best areas. Good Luck.
newfiearcher: Check your PM's.
LWood, When are you going to be there? Four of us are booked with Rays for the first week in October. We will be driving from Ohio. First time for all of us to hunt in NF.
Here is some info for those of you first timers(like myself) flying into Deerlake and need a hotel. When I was looking online most places to stay were well over 100 dollars a night. I almost booked from there, but luckily I decided to call up there.
I called Deer Lake Motel and they had a hunters rate of 75 a night. So call instead of booking online and you'll likely save 25-50 dollars a night.
There's a new Holiday Inn Express as well in Deer Lake, not sure if there is a restaurant in there or not. Maybe they will have an outfitter rate.
Doing moose at Rays the first week of Oct.
Going back with Sandy Lake for the 4th time this fall. The trip is affordable and the people you meet are super.
Thanks for all the info guys, i am thinking about booking in 2014
Mountainman , have you looked into flights yet to see how $. I know I'm not till 2014, but looks like it is going to be $$$. Air Canada looks like the main airline. But since I can't afford an additional 3-4 days off work to travel, gotta do it.
What are Sandy Lake Rates like? PM if you prefer.
moosecanada, There is a restaurant in the hotel in Deer Lake and I would suggest the Bakeapple tarts for desert. Do not drink the water, it was condemned years ago. If you are processing your moose in Canada I highly recommend Countryside Abitior only a few miles from the hotel in Deer lake. Your moose will be cut to your request, ground, made into sausage, steaks, roasts however you want for short money. All your meat will be vacuum packed and start to be frozen or frozen depending on your schedule. I have processed 3 of 4 Newfie moose I have taken with all with great results.
Tommy, Yes, I have looked at the flights. Air Canada is for sure the cheapest I've found. I'm flying out of Nashville, which seems to be an expensive airport to fly out of sometimes. I will connect in Toronto. The price is going to be somewhere between 950-1050.
Safari thanks, great information. Mountainman i usually fly United from Nashville Halifax when im heading to TN return. You maybe able to get Porter Airlines as well, give them a try. Maybe combining the 2 airlines you can save some cash.
Airfare $ is what I saw. Funny if I drive to Detroit 4 hours from home and connect to Toronto, it adds $500 more if I just drive to Toronto, which is just few hours more on road. Have you found out how you are shipping meat home once you get one down
Thanks for the info moose. I'll check it out. The have a direct flight to Halifax from Nashville? I always go for the least connections possible when going to a hunt.I wish I could drive, but I just don't want to burn all the extra vacation days.
Tommy- Most outfitters work with a shipping company that, after season, will truck all the frozen meat/antlers to drop off points in the states. It sounds a lot cheaper than paying to fly back hundreds of pounds of meat. Plus the antlers go for free when you ship your meat with them. Your outfitter will have all the info on this.
, we usually go through NY or NJ airports as a connecting flight.
Last week I bought my flights from Toronto to Deerlake, and from Deerlake back to Nashville through Air Canada for $740. I'm going to buy the one way Nashville to Toronto leg through United since I get more miles that way(price ends up almost the same,$266).
I watched the flights for over a month and they didn't move much at all. But the day after I bought the $740 flights, one of the legs jumped 140 dollars. So I'm glad I bought when I did.
There are slightly cheaper ways to do it, but this way I can get my bags, clear immigration/customs and just hangout with my bags in hand till my next flight. I'll check in to my Toronto to Deerlake flight with no customs or immigration hassles to deal with. And I don't have to worry about my bags making it through any connections on the way up. I'll gladly pay a little extra for that piece of mind.
Just booked my ferry tickets for evening 18 Sep crossing, myself and Caribou Woo, anyone else crossing then?
Our hunt begins on 9/22 so we will crossing pretty close to you. How much was the ferry tickets and should we book soon?
Maybe see you guy there, im from North Sydney, and i will be heading over September 1 to October 21
Good Luck to all hunters this fall.
Moose, I stopped by your both at NWTF a couple times but missed you. Met Dale, nice guy.
ELawit, ferry was like 240 for vehicle and 90 for two berths...You can book online now at marine-atlantic.ca. We return evening ferry 9/27...Have a blast.
I drove to Newfoundland a couple of years ago from the phila area. It was a long drive for one guy, but beautiful. I will definitely fly into Deer Lake on my next trip. I loved it up there on the Rock.
Bigkev, wouldn't try it myself, must have been a long drive...picking up Woo in bordentown NJ.
Played Football against (BMI) Bordentown Military Institute in 1969. They beat us 7 to 6 and I never got over that loss.
I sure do love Newfoundland. Drivin there 8 times. Ferry is great fun. Enjoy!
Tracker....just saw your post and sent you a pm. My friend and I from NY just added a third party for the hunt in NL this Oct. He is from FL and his first trip to the 'Rock'. This will be the 4th time I have driven there. Not that I have not flown to some hunts but as I am getting close to 70 I like keeping my wheels on the ground!
Big I'm with you and I live in Boston! If I was retired like Charlie and could do it in a couple days and enjoy it I would like it more.
I'm flying!
I take it Charlie is retired! I enjoy the drive as he does though leaving from OK does add milage. Driving allows me to visit the resting places of parents and family/friends who have passed. Those of you who are thinking of the Rock as a destination will not be disappointed. Select an established outfitter and enjoy! For those going in Sept. via Marine Atlantic...the ferry....you may want to book earlier as the tourist season is still on somewhat. Over by Oct.
Yep, been retired for almost 5 years. Got er done at age 55. Live below your means for 30 years and it's easy!
Last year I drove over 14,000 miles for hunts. EVERYDAY is SATURDAY!
Here is what a Newfoundland fly-in camp looks like!
Bou'bound. That looks alot like Island Pond of Moose Valley Outfitters, Shot 3 moose there.
Charlie you are my hero...ok maybe over stated but love your attitude!
LWOOD, You will have a great time at Ray's, great outfit. Good luck
Is the ferry from Portland to Nova Scotia closed? If so I assume the closest departure port is North Sydney.
The only departure point is North Sydney.
The Ferry from Portland to Nova Scotia I doubt would save time to get to Nova Scotia. You would still have to drive the length of Nova Scotia including Cape Breton once you land from Portland.
Edit: It appears there is no Ferry Service any longer from Portland to NS.
Another fly in camp. Bear Pond camp. MVO
Mountainman, Shoot a broad head that groups well for you. Rick M and myself both took nice moose in AK last Sept. and both of use used 100 grain heads. Mine was a Rocky Mountain Titanium and Rick used a VPA non vented. Good luck and have fun.
DJ
Bou & Sawdust: Those pictures are driving me crazy. Every time I leave the Rock I immediately want to go back. Those pictures along with mine are "classic" fly-in ponds! Thanks for posting! C
Bou-is the tundra up there much like Alaska with "tussocks" and elevated mounds?
If so-the places that look like easy walkin' are anything but.....:0
Hawkeye: I have been to Alaska 6 times and Newfoundland 8 times. One of my trips to Alaska was with Pat on the North Slope of the Colvile River in the Northern most part of Alaska. The tundra there was something like Newfoundland but in reality there is nothing quite like the bogs. You can move all day but you can't move fast.
Here are two likely 3.5 year old bulls that would score around 125 (P&Y Minimum is 135 for Canadian Moose. This is a very doable representation of what you can get.
Was Moose Hunting here but ran into these little guys and played with them for a while, there was one stag that was real rutty, I kept showing him the inner white lining of my rain coat and he would come at me snorting and blowing, a few times he got to within 10 yards.
I am booked with Patey and Sons Ltd. for Sept 29th thru Oct 6th.I am driving with 3 other guys from my area. This will be my first trip to Newfoundland and I'm sure not my last.We are flying in to a remote camp.Should be an adventure of a lifetime!!!
Hey 4406v, My wife and I, same week with Eric and Ida,"see you "bys" there eh, buddy," Rob H.
Great Photos, Newfoundland Rocks.....
Keep the photos coming. I can't wait!
The Mighty Woodland Stag. Anyone have a Woody tag this fall.
Can't wait to go back! Great place and great people.
Sunrise approaching Port aux Basques
Fishing for Landlocked Salmon with my daughter
Some great pix guys, I'm really looking forward to my first trip to Newfie and my first moose hunt. Charlie, I retired at 54 and have been driving on almost all of my hunts since and I am looking forward to the drive to the Rock. Another adventure!
Went with Tuckamore Lodge back in October of 2003. Told myself I would be back and as I sit here I realize it will be a decade this October since I was there and all these pictures bring back good memories. I gotta get back to Newfoundland soon!
Great pictures. Good Luck to all hunters heading to Newfoundland.

Well, second payment sent. 170 days to go. Settled on 150 gr,3 blade VPAs for this hunt.
I went to NF in 1959 and 1960 and the whole trip cost was about 600 dollars including licsence if I remember right,(which is getting to be problem of late)
Way to go Charlie - just retired myself (been 6 months and I still can't get the grin off my face!).
I love these threads and pics! NF for moose and possibly caribou is DEFINITELY on my travel list (no date yet). We'll take the trailer and make a several week trip out of it, culminating in a moose or caribou hunt in NF. Then, straight home with a load (hopefully) of meat!
I LOVE RETIREMENT!!! (the extra time also helps when you are rebuilding!)
I just booked the ferry tickets for my wife and I ,September 24th night crossing and then we're there for 13 days. Really looking forward to seeing Nfld.!! Rob H.
Oct. 12 seems far away but will be booking ferry fore the 3 of us in 3 weeks. Cannot wait. My 4th trip there....hopefully not the last.
Caribouken, Is it necessary to book the ferry in advance? I'm not sure yet when I will be crossing. I'd like to get on the island a few days early to see the sites and relax from the drive.
164 days
Pete
We are going to cross on Sept 18 and we already booked. There's only two crossings a day. We are crossing at night and booked a berth, so that we can sleep in a bed. It takes about 7-7.5 hours to cross. We are going a day early as well.
Woo
Here's a little info. Book as soon as you know your dates. You can always change the reservation. There could be storms that delay crossings for a day or so. Night crossings are good if you sleep but take longer. I usually go up and take the night crossing going there then the day crossing coming home (about 2 hours faster).
Petemc, sent you a pm. Charlie's info is accurate. Storms have affected my crossings twice out of 3 trips. No charge to you if they make the change. I think it is $25 if you do. On one trip one of our group stayed longer than the 5 days to get his moose...on another we arrived for the return trip only to have to overnight before getting on. This year we are the last group in camp so we are going to use the time and try to hunt for the best horn we can. We may run into some tough weather but snow bunches them a little and we can stay longer so changing the ferry back is just a call. Do enjoy the trip to the 'Rock'!!
Ken
Thanks Ken, I sent you a PM back - let me know if you don't get it. I appreciate all the info on this thread - great resource. Thanks.
September can't get here fast enough! First time going and these pictures get the adrelinline pumping, going to shoot my bow now!
That's always a good thing to hear moose. Thanks
Awesome to hear of moose activity. Was talking to my outfitter and he has good news about the caribou in his territory. No permits there but maybe....!
Petemc....Made my reservations for the ferry last night. I used too live in far upstate NY. PM me with any questions about travel routes you might have. From far upstate NY there are no w/e interstates. Assume you are headed to cross at Calsis, ME.
The outfitter did say that gas was around $6...plan accordingly.
For any first timers that are flying and looking at flights.Dont forget your first destination airport into Canada is where you go through customs.
You may be looking at flights with the shortest layover at this point.ButI would recommend a layover of at least 2hrs to make sure you have enough time to get you gear through customs and onto you connecting flight.
Depending at what terminal you land at it will take some time to get to where your luggage is picked up to go thrugh customs. And if there is any delay of unloading your plane, or a delay of any kind you may run out of time and have to leave without your gear if your connecting flight is scheduled to leave and you have'nt gone through customs.Just a heads up to give yourself some extra time at this point.
109 days to go but who's counting?
Well...I am counting! Trying to figure out how to beat the heat here as we have just entered the high 90s. Maybe should have gone back to QC to hunt spring bear but that was not in the budget.
Have reserved the ferry for the three of us and trying to imagine frosts/snow/wind/rain and moose....late Oct. in NL!
Moosecanada....PM me as to where you hunt in NL.
Just returned from a Manitoba bear hunt with Bear Track outfitters and now it's time to turn my attention to my first ever trip to the Rock! 90 days and counting for our drive up from South Jersey. We are leaving a day and a half early in case of bad weather to cross the ferry. If it's on time we'll hang out at our float plane base in Stevensville and sample some of the local culture and food and drink! Anticipation!
Have reserved the ferry for the three of us and trying to imagine frosts/snow/wind/rain and moose....late Oct. in NL!
Maybe, but then again I remember hunting in a short sleeve t shirt on Halloween:) You never know up there.
bb
Two years ago this coming fall I took my bull on Oct. 21 in just those shirt sleeves you mention. Spent the next three nights sitting in snow storms over a bear bait and we would have to chainsaw our way back to camp as the 4 x 4 would not clear the downed spruces. Central part of the island.
That is the lure of the island....you certainly never know.
Just booked with Tuckamore, September 23 to the 28, fly up the 21st, fly out the 29th. What is customs like to thru in Toronto on the way up?
INDB- I'm flying up on the 20th for a 23-28 hunt with Grey River Lodge. I'm staying in Deerlake the night of the 20th and 21st. Where are you staying?
My girlfriend lives in Toronto and I go through customs there a lot. The longest its ever taken me was about 35 minutes. Most times its less then 15. Coming back to the states(you clear in Toronto before boarding)has taken me 90 minutes though.
I'll be there after midnight on the 22nd, getting picked on the 22nd to drive to camp. May have too look at different flights coming come, only have 65 mins between landing in Toronto and leaving for Indianapolis
You may make it in 65 min. But It'll be a gamble. It has taken me 90 on the long end, but has been as short as 20 min.
Anybody going to be overnighting in Deerlake on Sept. 21st and want to get together for dinner or a beer let me know. I'll be in real late on on the 20th and I'm meeting my outfitter on the 22nd.
If anyone is still up at 1:00 AM on the 22nd, I'd be glad to meet fellow Bowsiters.
I may move my flight, there is an earlier one into Toronto, but it adds about $170 to the trip. It gives me a 2.5 hr layover before I fly back to Indianapolis.
What boots is everyone wearing? I know on the other thread about what would you bring, everyone says rubber boots. But I can't stand walking far in rubber boots, I have had mucks, lacrosse, etc, and do not like walking in them. I was looking at the Kenetreck Grizzly 13" pack boot and the Kenetrek waterproof gaiters. That could be a gamble as well, as I have never had their boots, so they may not work well either. Just looking for other options than rubber boots.
there are no other options than rubber.
don't even think about it.
don't even let it creep into your mind.
Haha thanks Bou' I guess I will look into different rubber boots that work better for walking. Any other advice? See many black bears while moose hunting?
If you are flying, I highly recommend not routing through Montreal, that has been without a doubt my most frustrating and worse experiences flying
INDBowhunter, I have always felt the same way regarding rubber boots. Looking at every outfitter in NF and all the other discussions recommending rubber boots I took the leap. I bought these, Nokian Trek-Plus, http://www.outsidemetro.com/products/Trek-Plus.html, a little more expensive but I have to say they have changed my mind regarding walking in rubber boots. Very comfortable, firm heel support, good sole.
Would you guys that have hunted there in the past recommend a bear tag too? I'd like to know what you guys do if you tag out early? I've asked the outfitter about fishing or small game hunting. Didn't really get a response yet.
outfitters will normally let you do a bear tag as an add on, but once you tag out on the moose they won't take you out looking for lightening in a bottle in the form of a stumble upon bear.
I think fishing is closed by the time most guys are hunting. I think it might be open early Sept but am sure it's closed by October.
Too bad because the salmon fishing looks awesome!
My question was "Is fishing available?" I mean your in Canada ,there's a lake ,can I fish? Don't want to keep'em if they aren't in season , just want to do SOMETHING besides sit in camp if I tag out early. I've spent money on a "stumble on" bear tag before just don't know if there's enough bear to have a good chance?
If you are going to Labrador or Newfy, when fishing season is over, it's over, you cannot fish, even catch and release. We are hunting Newfy Sept 20-27 and fishing is closed. Other Provinces are different.
O.K. I found out fishing is CLOSED during the moose season so no fishing.
Thinking about a bear tag to have something to do if I tag out early. The tag is $500 and no additional fee from the guide.
Have any of you that have been there in the past shot a bear? Or do you see bears often enough to have a reasonable chance of killing one?Don't want to burn $500 for a tag I won't need.
What do you do in camp after the kill?
In late September early October are the bugs bad enough I should bring the thermacell?
Most outfitters have tags and will let you buy once you have tagged out - some may want you to commit early if they hunt over baits.
Are they running baits or just S&S?
Sounds like S&S.
The guide does not bait for bears.Simply a "stumble" on chance of killing one. What are the odds???
In all my trips to Newfoundland I have never been bored for one second. Maybe I'm easily amused but I've killed on day one and last day but never had a down moment.
Some areas have lots of bears (blueberries) and some are random. Your outfitter should know the odds. Sage is correct that you should be able to buy one there.
A question for you guys that have been there.
I will be there the last week of Sept. Would you choose the 800 gram alpha burleys or the non insulated ones? I have both so either one is an option.
Thanks.
The lighter ones. It will not be cold and you want to be as light as possible. Have fun! C
Charlie,I know you've been there a few times.Is a thermacell necessary?
I'm not suggesting I'd be bored just hanging out in camp.I'm just looking for a few ideas on what "other" activities are available after the moose is down.
The outfitter does not supply tags "if" you want one. They have to be ordered from St Johns ahead of time.So now is the time to decide.
So far I've asked the question and haven't got any real answers. The outfitter says bears average between 200-800 lbs but did not provide any pictures or success rates. They also don't show any bears killed in their brochure. The outfitter has nothing to gain by me buying a bear tag (they don't charge extra,no trophy fee) So I am not sure why I haven't received a clear answer.
Either way I am as excited as a kid waiting for Christmas.I am going to have fun and enjoy myself NO MATTER WHAT.
Thermacell is not necessary in the fall
I never used a Thermacell while there and I've hunted from the last days of August until the last days of October. There can be some bugs but you are moving, on ridge tops and there is usually wind so I've not considered them a problem.
Are you bow hunting? Killing a Moose with an arrow is not easy. I almost always focus on one specie per hunt. The key is getting a bow hunter guide and getting off the roads.
The outfitters I've been with (3 different) all had bear tags available and they never mentioned an 800 pound bear. You don't sound confident in your outfitters response about bears so perhaps hold on to your $500. Your choice! Enjoy the Rock!!
I got lucky and got a bear with the bow with MVO in 2004. it was a stumble upon deal as that is the only way they allow them
They have been in operation since 1998 and had two bowhunters take bear, it is actually mentioned on the website. I have hunted nfld 7 times and have seen probably 15 bears. many of them just a black dot way far away.
in 2003 i came across a monster and had it within 20 yards head down, unaware, goring on blueberries. it was like a black volkswagon. just a beast.
i had no tag. had never bought one before.
the next year i bought a tag for $100 and got a small bear after a very long stalk. took him at the top of a mountain at 15 yards. bought tags after and never used them.
as i noted above if the outfitter does not do bait hunts, and i doubt any do in the fall, then these are pure stumble upon hunts and the outfitter is not going to take you out to look for a needle in a haystack specifically for bear after you killed your moose or bou.
I have never stumbled on a bear that I could stalk or shoot while hunting Moose or Caribou. I know of others that have but it has never happened to me. however the outfitter that I use maintains bait sites all fall and he takes some really good bears off of them in the fall after tagging out on Moose. You can buy a bear tag after your hunt for Moose is over and it includes two tags. I will note that there are huge bears in Newfoundland. There are many over 500 lbs. If someone told me of an 800lb bear seen or taken, I wouldn't be surprised.
What are the bugs going to be like in NL in Sep? Does a Thermacell do the trick or Watkins, etc?
I really envy you guys. I have been wanting to do a moose hunt there for years but cant get any of my long time hunting buddies to cough up the cash that I know they have. Ditto for QL Caribou. Thankfully I've met some new friends that travel hunt since I've been in the broadhead business. Hopefully I'll be able to talk someone in to going in 2014 or 2015. Mountainman, send us a pic of your VPA'd moose for the website..
Rayzor- I'll try my best to fill that request.
No bugs. good. thanks......55 days
The wait is not easy. Our heat index today is predicted to be 110. That means the pool will be a warm bath of about 95. Will do the outside chores today and be done by 9 am. Maybe a 55 mile drive to BassPro to kill the heat of the day.......hoping for cool-cold of NL in late Oct. will renew the memories of cold NNY......80 days to go!
Newfoundland has been dry this summer, some rivers have closed due to the lack of rain. Should be a great year for moose and caribou again this season, as scouting reports are seeing lots of animals. Good Luck this fall.
Somewhere on the island this morning "my bull" is looking for a drink and a little shade to spend the afternoon.I sit here with a hot cup of coffee in my air conditioned office thinking of the day we'll meet. The anticipation of what's to come excites me like nothing I've done before............
4406v: What you describe is at least half the experience. "Anticipation", I usually have the days counted backwards on my calendar. Enjoy the ride! C
The attached picture is from one of the fly-in archery only Moose camps at Conne River Outfitting. I think about that camp often. Currently our only Bowsite sponsor in Newfoundland!
I will not get there until the last week in Oct. Save one for me; either sex....a big cow w/o a calf would do just fine!
35 days till I pickup Caribou Woo at the Bordentown exit on Jersey turnpike and we make the drive to the rock. Hunting with Effords Hunting Adventures.
P.S. Learning to speak Newfie before I go, Whereyaat, eh?
13 days till I leave, CAN"T WAIT!!!!
21 days, looking forward to a bluester......eh?
You all will love the big Rock they call Newfoundland. Hunted with Bob Efford several years back. We, Mark and myself bought bear tags and each hunted for Caribou and Moose. Mark bumped into a good Bear and a great Caribou, really great one. No Moose though. His guide got a bit to anxious on a couple Bulls and ended up spoiling his limited chances. I killed a small Caribou and Bull Moose. Never saw a Bear at all. Lots of wild blueberries and small ponds. Do not step in the puddles though. Mark was following a quad on foot and made the mistake of doing just that and ended up with one foot clear in and the other splayed out on the ground. Said he never felt ground under the hole so who knows how deep it was. I found out quickly that you can not catch up to a Caribou, man they can cover ground. For my part I never saw a good quality Caribou and the guides told us back then they were not seeing the numbers they were used to. Even more concerning was the lack of calves. They talked about the coyotes taking a toll on the Caribou numbers.
Mark and I drove to the boat from Ohio and rode across and then drove to the plane for the bush flight . Best move we ever made. We took a week to get to the landing and visited many places in Nova Scotia. What a beautiful place! We also found the residents of Canada to be very welcoming. Be sure if you drive to hit the local Tim Hortons for a double, double or whatever you like. I swear we never went near one at any time of day or night were there wasn't a line waiting for coffee. This was before they really gained a foothold in the States. I guess as I think about it, this was our first trip for big game and its the only trip we took were we took our time and enjoyed the scenery getting there. I wish you all a great season and experience on the big rock!
Jim
Hey, I just had a thought. Are lighted nocks legal in Newfoundland? I leave for Ray's September 27th.
Three Fingers, Mark from BSC told me they are legal. We're leaving for Ray's on the 26th driving from Michigan. Sounds like we'll see you there. Jerry
Jim, thanks for the info. Sounds like you had a blast. We will be hunting Harold's Pond.
Hopefully this thread soon starts filling up with some of this years trip/kill photos.
Bow season for Moose hunting started and we have a nice bull down. Weather has been wet and windy but we got the job done this morning. Now in search of a big bear. Good luck to all coming to NL this fall its going to be a great fall.
September 2, 2013 got it done in the morning, bow on the search for a 600 lb Black Bear.
16 Days until we leave.Time to double check the gear lsit.Change the oil in the truck and rotate the tires.
LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!!!
Congrats Moosecanada! T -3 days.
After some long weeks of guiding bear hunters my wife surprised me with a trip to tuckamore for moose. Leaving the 28th
I fly out in 2 days.
Deer lake weather for next week calling for daytime highs in the mid 50s, nights in the low 40s. 10-12 mph winds most days. Either sunny or partly cloudy with slight chance of rain some days.
I'm definitely not going to complain about that. At least it won't be real hot. Good luck to anybody headed up.
Just got home from Newfoundland, what a trip! The beauty of the island is something everyone should witness in their lifetime and the hospitality of the locals is so surprising, never have I met such welcoming and friendly people. We both took moose with our rifles and not one regret leaving the bow at camp. I was rattled seeing such a giant animal up close and I think for my first moose the gun was the right decision to gain experience and learn more about the hunt. If I go back, I am going to push it back a few weeks to late Sept when the rut is on and the moose easier to call in for the bow.
Good luck to everyone heading out this year. If you are driving and taking the ferry, get a cabin reserved, it was a much better experience than sleeping in those chairs. If you have questions PM me anytime.
Leaving for the airport in 3 hours, going to Tuckamore.
here you go Sage, not a bow kill but here is the moose I took with Island Safari in Springdale NF on Monday.
who likes blueberry's? I ate so many on this hike out.
Awesome! Getting me excited for my trip.
I love Blueberries,, the truck is loaded ,Rolling for the rock now. Rob H.
I leave in 2 days and your pictures took my breath away.I am going crazy waiting for the time to leave.
4406, take a good camera, I regret using my iphone 5 for all the pics. It doesn't do well in low light conditions. Also, for some reason they always get disoriented off the phone.. the one photo above where I ask if anyone can spot the moose is perfectly clear on my phone and ipad but on here I can't see it at all which is odd.
Good luck guys, I look forward to hearing how you all do upon your return home.
I bought a new Nikon coolpix waterproof digital yesterday. It will not only take great pictures but takes video too.
Leaving for the Rock at 9am this morning YAHOO!!!!
Well, back from a great trip. I'm going to try and write an article about it so no story until I know how that pans out. It was an amazing hunt.33 yard broadside, complete pass through and lost the arrow in a tuckamore thicket.
Congrats mountain man. Likewise, Carobou Woo and I had a great trip to the rock. No problems with ferry and outfitter did a great job. We took an 8 Pt and 3 pt respectively. Detailed report to follow.

Our view of the area we hunted from the air
And "NO YOU CANNOT FISH, FISHING IS CLOSED!!!"
I spotted an estimated 400 lb black bear and of course didn't have the tag.I couldn't get a straight answer on whether or not they killed any bears in our area.
Can you see it just below the right end of the lake?
4406,who did you guys use as outfitter??Thinking of newfoundland for moose
