How much moose do you eat?

Those of you that get a moose on a regular basis, just how much does your family eat in a year? Now, I'm not talking about how much you go through because you give it to other family members and friends, but just what your family consumes. Personally, if I have around 100 pounds of any particular meat that's plenty, whether it's moose, elk, venison or whatever and I'm looking for something different.
If we could get enough moose, that's all we'd eat!
More than I probably should......
I have a family of 4 2 adults, 2 kids (9/6). We eat wild game min. 5 times a week.
The min. we cook/meal is 1 lbs every meal.
That's a min of 259 pounds in a year. Obviously some meals I am cooking more than that so that number goes up.
Last year I shot a bull elk and 3 deer and they are almost all gone.
I'm heading to the rock this year so hoping to bring back some Moose!
Moose meat is our staple and one moose is usually enough for us for a year. I have eaten moose meat pretty well every year of my life, and I'm 60.
A Canada moose bull (I've never butchered an Alaska-Yukon or Shiras moose) usually yields anywhere from 250 to 400 (and even more) pounds of de-boned meat depending on age, condition, damage, butcher, etc.
A cow yields about 2/3 that (or less in the case of big mature bulls).
A calf yields about 90 to 125 pounds (depending on sex, whether twin or not, condition of mother, genetics, date killed, etc.)
But, it's hard to calculate how much we would consume if we ate only moose, and as you mention, we always share with other members of our family.
Depending on our harvests, our diet usually also includes caribou, bear, ducks, geese, grouse, ptarmigan, snowshoe hares, beaver, a variety of fish, and, if I go on a trip, deer.
Grew up eating moose all winter and walleye all summer. By the time I was 20yrs old, I hated the stuff! Used to pray for cow or chicken!
Now, with six kids, our family easily eats 3 deer, 1bear and anything else I can kill. This year I have 2 caribou, I'm gonna put some geese down tonight and at least one deer this fall. We can easily eat 500lbs of meat/year. This year, the deer is gonna be burger as the 'bou is sooooo nice!
A moose would last us till June. Haven't killed one since I moved to Manitoba tho.
I gave a significant portion of my moose away and a year later I'm still eating moose. 4 in the family. A moose every 2 years would be good for me, especially when you add in the deer you kill and a few wild turkeys.
buskill, I know where you can unload the rest :-)
We use about 2 bulls between 4 hunters in our group. We stop shooting when we have 2 down. We're never picky, just any legal 2 bulls will do. One year we shot 3 because we got split up and there seem to be more than we could use. It's our main staple along with deer or some other critter in our house.
The last three years a family of four adults and two young kids has gone through a bull or large cow and three deer a year. Headed for NF with two others Oct. 25th for my 4th trip. Do buy some pork/fish/chicken but love the moose.
Raising one boy (granted, he was huge....) and feeding at least one other kid most of the time, my family would go through an average sized moose in about 6 or 7 months. We had other game and utilized some pork and chicken as well.
Pete
all that others will give me as I've never hunted moose and can' t even hunt anything ant more. (health issues) Love moose meat !!
Boy am I jealous!
I have not had moose in a very long time, but there is hope.
Two of my cousins drew tags for Maine this year.
I am hoping for a few steaks.
We eat wild game. Period. My daughter and family with three kids: a teen age girl and boy plus one 10 year old boy share our food supply. I just got a LARGE moose (taxidermist friend says it would be 7-8 years old), the antlers were 63 inches wide and with small skull plate weighed 60 pounds. We complement that with silver salmon and ducks. We are still concerned that we will run short of meat before next fall and wouldn't hesitate to take some other animal for red meat. Moose, deer, caribou, etc., but that probably won't happen this fall, as deer numbers are GREATLY reduced in Prince William Sound due to two extremely deep snowfall winters and caribou are not available near where I can hunt. A second small moose is the only likely possibility.
Not nearly enough sadly..
If I knock down a shiras next week I'll be eating a bunch of it
Going to find out. 430 lbs of meat home from the processor. Cooking some Shiras burgers right now.
I have a moose roast that I did the injectable marinate in with onions garlic and some red peppers on top in the crock pot. Gonna tear it up tomorrow night and make pulled moose sandwiches for lunch at work next week. Got burger thawed and I'll have enough from one pack for three nights. These animals are so big I cannot answer you until I finish one as a single man sharing one on get together's with friends. ( Way more than I could hope to finish in two years by myself )Bob.
We don't buy meat (except for some chicken every once on while....I don't care much for it to be honest)
Family of five......two elk, two deer, couple turkeys, couple dozen pheasants, few trout, some pike and walleye......I don't know how much that is in weight....we process everything but never weighed it....it would be interesting to know.
I live in New Hampshire lots of luchk getting drawn for a moose hunt. I eat about thirty to forty pounds a year, my wife will not eat it so it is all mine, yummie! I have a ton of relatives all over Canada and it get a care package at least once or twice during the fall usually an over night shipment and most times around fifteen to twent pound of meat!
Stay well !!
4 kids, 3 adults...we go through a moose a year.
Anybody ever notice that Idaho Shiras moose are tough as hell. I've known several people who have taken moose out of the same area and they are delicous, but you might as well make it all into burger.
I didn't believe it until I helped a friend of mine out on his moose hunt. The steaks were like delicious moose tasting rubber.
Moose should be tender,it all starts with the shot to the recovery on how the meat tastes.A family of 4 in Canada can easily eat a moose a year.
I just got back from Idaho and now have a full freezer. I'm hoping it isn't like rubber
I'm surprised by that. I shot a giant cow moose on the Snake rivier outside of Rexburg and it was like eating Kobe beef (without the fat).
Steaks were the size of plates.
I'm sure where they live and how they eat makes a huge difference. My moose was gorging on the river and in farmers fields.
