I have been thinking about trying to start a moose salt lick. Not sure what to use though. I am pretty remote up here and no farming or decent hunting shops around. We are heading south around Christmas time and thought I would pick something up for the spring. Do I just get a couple different ones made for dear and toss them out in an area known to have moose or is there some rationale to it? Maybe a twig flavoured block? :) I am still mulling the idea over, not sold on it. I think the hunt would feel a little cheapened, but I want to give it a try, if nothing else, just for some neat trail cam photos/video.

Hawk Not sure your question? It is posted under the moose forum. I should have specified that I am in Ontario where it is legal. I mentioned dear salt licks because I know that they are readily available and assume that moose would have a similar palate for saltiness, but don't know. That is part of my question.
Sorry, it is one of my pet peeves when people ask something like this and don't specify where they are located, then I go and do it.
I figure that since the wind is always blowing in toward me, no matter which direction it is coming from, I must be the center of the universe :)

I would just buy a couple of 50# salt blocks at any live stock feed store like Tractor Supply Co.

I've seen better activity on the farm from deer where we had put out mineral blocks for cattle which are mostly salt with lots of trace minerals. Usually sort of reddish brown in color.

You might want to try water softener salt pellets. I had an outfitter who used them.

I've hunted Ontario and love the country. Coming back up this August for a bear hunt. Don't waste your money on salt blocks, white or trace mineral. Deer, and I suppose Moose, love white salt but it doesn't do much but attact deer and help them retain water. Trace Mineral salt help deer health but deer don't care much for it. Tyy this....Go to an farm store. Buy 50 pounds of loose Dicalcium Phosphate, 25 pounds of loose Trace Mineral salt and 25 pounds of stock salt (also loose). Mix it together well. Divide it into 4 equal parts (it does 8 for deer). Find places to establish a "lick." Dig the dirt to about 6 inches deep in about a 2 foot square area. Mix the loose dirt with the mineral lick material and fill in the hole. Deer love it. They like the salt and it attracts them. The trace mineral is ggod for their health and the Dicalcium Phosphate helps strengthen their bones, skeletal and antlers. The Trace Mineral salt and the Dicalcium Phosphate helps them grow bigger and stronger. So while you are baiting them to a degree, your also improving the health of the animals that use them. Start the licks in late March to early April. Check them every 30 to 45 days and relenish them as needed. Good Luck!
