I know every one talks about using 100% DEET for hunting in Alaska. A coworker was telling me how he uses Vanilla extract and water. He proceeded to tell me that all bugs stay away. My first thought is the smell might attract bears. lol

It works really well on gnats and noseeums but not so good on skeeters. I never watered it down - straight up with the cheap stuff. Deet - that stuff is good on everything.

Don't know if you guys know what buffalo gnats are, but take my word for it, they bite the hell out of you ! Like 5 times worse than a skeeter. We used the vanilla/water mix for them and it works ! The mix actually is better than full strength. Also Avon Skin-So-Soft mixed with water is even better.

On the farm, we used to do the Vanilla on a bandanna around our neck; and it was great for gnats, especially the buffalo. It had little to no effect on mosquitoes. Peppermint oil, is also a low grade repellent- but it bothered my senses too much.

I wouldn't take the vanilla/peppermint clothes in my tent if I were you:)

It depends a lot on where you go and how late in September. We really only had 2 days where the bugs were moderately bad and those were whitesox.

Black flies and buffalo gnats are worse than mosquitos. I use Old Time Woodsmans Fly Dope. It stinks but it works. Use it mostly when fishing or turkey hunting. Thermacell for skeeters!

Ben's is the best stuff I have ever used. Repels everything.

My plans were to use Bens but one if the guys that works for me mentioned this. I was skeptical on whether it would work or not so I had to ask.

I would ditto the skn so soft as well.

But spray my clothes and gear with Permethrin. It does a good job of keeping the insects away and kills many.

Never found a tick on me or gear, since started using this.

Its used by the military.

Spray on your clothes and it lasts for six washings.
