Its getting that time of year that there should be some very excited hunters out there getting ready to take off for AK. Just wanted to post some pics, and invite others to do so of the adventure. I'm not talking about the hero pics, the others is what I'm after (flying in, camp, the journey, and the work)
Were heading back in 2016 with Papa Bear... Here Goes!
1991. Pat shot this Moose in a Loin Cloth and a home made Wrong Bow.
I leave Sept 5 for 15 days afield of DIY Moose and Brown Bear (hunting partner is a resident) bowhunting... flying in from Dillingham. I can't even begin to describe how anxious I am. These pics aren't helping. haha
Keepem coming. 29 days and counting.
I wish I had a cool hunting partner like that!
You do! Your lovely wife accompanys you to Hawaii! :)
Yabbut...the only meat she'll carry there is a 4-pack of filet mignon all the way to the gas grill...ha!
Only 30 more days! Can't wait! Thanks for the pics guys & keep em coming!
That last one was the morning after I was charged by a brown bear. She ran in to 6 feet and stood on my back pack. I must have smelled horrible since she did an about face and headed the other direction, after leaving behind some recycled blueberries.
Sorry guys, a moose hunt but not Alaska
Scott
Next year will be my year to hunt moose in Ak. and I cant wait. Was suppose to go this year but my partners surgery messed those plans up.We are doing something a little more manageable with a POW blacktail hunt instead.Leave on the 13th for that one Good luck to all you guys heading to Ak
Cool pix you guys.
Thanks for sharing.
Good luck, Robb
Damn u guys. This is my dream hunt. Awesome pictures
Hard living up there. We found what was left of 2 nice bulls about 10 feet apart. I assume they were killed by wolves in the winter.
Kevin,
You just reminded me to TAKE MORE PICTURES:) Nice stuff.
Good luck this year.
Thanks Rick! Looking forward to our next go-around with the bulls of central Alaska...30 days from today. I'll post more if anyone is interested.
Great pics above from many friends and people I know. I guess we all suffer from moose deficit disorder!
Charlie I am concerned. I am looking for the picture. Pat hasn't responded yet.
Nice pics everyone. Here is a photo of Bart Schleyer with his 90+ # self he made from Russian Ash.
This is my dream hunt. I am saving now to go next year. I hope to be able to add to stories like this next year.
Kevin, those are some beautiful pictures, good luck this year. Rick you see why I always tell you to take more pics, lucky you're with me and the video!
DJ
Herd bull, very nice to post a pic of Bart. He inspired many, including me.
Kevin great pics!!!
DJ & Rich...thanks! Definitely have to love a creature as awesome as a moose, living in the Alaskan wilderness. It's a privilege to go there and hunt them. I can scarcely believe that I'll be pursuing another giant in slightly over 4 weeks!
Best sunset pic on my trip.Bob.
Dj, I am getting better thanks to you:) Call you tomorrow.
Kevin, I know I told you this but good luck and enjoy! Bring us back a hunt recap. Watch out for Nick, he is prowling around F Banks!
You betcha Rick. I've heard enough things about Nick to keep my eyes open.... 8^)
And here is what an "eating" size moose looks like.
My very first moose. (Taken in the late Pleistocene!)
Pete, you back from Wa.? Hope to see you in the fall.
Huntingbob
I've stood in the floats of that plane before. I'll try to find my pics from back in 2002.
Pete, I think you were wearing the same camo jacket when we went to dinner. Lol I've been bugging Rick for us to get back to AK soon, after seeing some of Kevin's pictures, I think we are in!!! Our moose hunt was one of the best trips I've ever taken.
DJ
Like others here, I leave for Alaska solo moose hunt Sept 4th. Mike
Speechless.....outstanding pics!
Best of luck, Mike...you frickin' crazy! ...and inspiring.
Near the Hogatza River, AK 2013
The shelf on this pack broke under a hindquarter. I've since replaced it with a Kifaru. Meat packing might actually be fun now...
What is the best way to judge 50 inches minimum on a moose besides the 4 tine rule?
Slap a tape on his head.....!
A friend from a few years back.
Great Pics... thanks for sharing...
I need to pull out the pics from 2012. We leave in 30 days also and am booked again for 2016!!! Tough to work already!
Great pictures from everyone. My mind is in Alaska for half of every day right now.
cubdrvr....love that picture. There's something about big moose and longbows that just fits.
I can almost smell the fall air looking at these photos. wow. So many tradbows you guys are good!
Dang you guys! I'm booked for 2016. You are going to make it a very long wait.
Kevin - Great photo of plane with rack!
Kevin Dill, I've never been Moose hunting but everytime I see one dead in the water I think of one phrase..."Sh!t, now what?" your's doesn't look too bad but I still wouldn'tlike to break one down standing in a pond or stream but hey what the heck do I know?
Trust me....and trust a number of other guys who know. You'd rather not be disassembling a 1400 pound animal which has it's bottom half underwater. My 2011 bull took a broadhead straight through both lungs but managed to run over 300 yards. I watched him fall and saw the splash of water. That's when I knew a good morning just turned into a tough day. As it turned out, he was in calf-deep water and we managed a good job of cutting. For the record, I named that bull 'Splash'...might as well laugh through the tears!
love the pic kevin of the bull. This was a heavy plane...
A good partner is beyond valuable when a dinosaur is down.
Thought I would bring this thread back up to see how Kevin & others did this fall plus I get to help!
I can't believe Pat was hunting with Mitch Rompolla!
Kota-man : I resemble that!
I'm in for 2016.....Can't wait!!!
t Roy, Great pictures what's the story?
These animals are so big, that they literally "dam" the water flow around them.....notice how the water level is higher on his back, than on his belly? Water is flowing from right to left.......and his back literally dams the water....
Ahawkeye....your comment is quite appropriate when you walk up on one in the water ....Sh*t, now what?
Once we had this guy down, we pitched camp right there on the rivers edge. Thank God for long legs....my guide was a lot shorter than me...he actually had to get out of the water and go stand by the fire for a while to warm up, his body core got cold....
By morning, his head was darn near frozen solid....
We had NO sooner than pushed off from shore (riding really low in the water....really COLD water), than the outfitter flew over head...so we had to beach the raft, unpack, and pack it into the plane....over several trips....they almost had to split my rack, because we couldn't get it in the plane, they didn't want to attach it to a strut....we finally tookout a seat, and it JUST fit.
Danny, See "Bucket List Bull" thread I posted in Sept. of this year.
Jake, Did you guys butcher him right there, or did you get him closer to the shore?
Good deal..!just don't pull them together. Enjoyed the thread
Stupid phone.. "Didn't" pull them together
T-roy,
I would have given up my food for the day if we could have gotten him closer to shore....that sucker wouldn't BUDGE. We butchered him right there.....what really got me going was that my hands got pretty cold, and I dropped the knife once (or twice) and had to roll up my sleeves and reach down into the cold water to get the knife.....soaking parts of my upper torso.
Very good eating!! It still amazes me how thick their hide is on their shoulders (withers).
Anybody ever wonder why elk have ivory, but moose, caribou, and deer do not? Bummer, because Moose would have some impressive ivory!!
Not sure on that one. But my daughter called today to wish me a happy thanksgiving and wants to go to Alaska with me. Wholly crap something worked! Now I have to start saving! Bob.
I've heard of guys using a raft pump to get some sir into the body cavity making it possible to get moose into pretty shallow water where it's easier to work on them. Anyone else ever hear of that or try it?
How about a rope-along?
Mule, I doubt that the raft pump would have worked on my bull. He had 5 entry holes in his chest not counting the exit holes;>)
A come-along would've been nice but there wasn't really anything close that we could have hooked onto, plus, I don't know if we could have shoved a branch or anything else in the ground & have it hold. I could see where it could come in handy though. Seems I read on here something Kevin posted once about utilizing some pulleys on his moose hunt, but don't remember how or where he utilized them, maybe just for hanging the meat.?
Jake, I was fortunate that the pond where my bull died in wasn't all that cold. I'll bet that the river sucked the heat out of you guys pretty quickly! Was the bull still warm while you were butchering him or had he been dead for quite a while? If still warm, I'll bet that at least helped to keep your hands from getting cold.
It's amazing how your fingers & hands don't want to work very well when they get cold.
T-roy,
When butchering that animal, the water was everywhere we needed to cut. I don't remember ever feeling any warmth from the animal. I just remember that initially we tied the raft to the moose and as we cut him up, we put the piece in the raft. Eventually we pulled the raft to shore and offloaded some of the meat....but as the carcass got smaller, the "drag" of the downstream raft (and the rope kept getting in the way) prevented us from using it anymore....so we'd carry each remaining piece of meat to shore.
We had grizzly sign in the area before we killed the bull, so I slept very lightly that evening, despite being really tired. The bull died about an hour before dusk, so much of our work was by flashlight, in the dark, in the cold water....I remember thinking that years later, when I would be sitting in the comfort of a warm room, it would make for one hell of a memory.....it has!!
Jake
I know what you mean about how thick their hide is, but I was also impressed how well my Havalon Bolt did cutting thru it.
It looks like in the pics that you were only wearing leather boots. Is that correct? Also, how many times have you looked up at your moose on the wall & grinned reading this thread!!?
Just read your entire thread T-Roy. Very very good read! Congratulations.
I somehow missed that one before. Yeah... I guess that bull wouldn't hold much air! lol
I once had an elk client decide to hunt out to the trailhead on the last day instead of throwing in the towel and riding. He killed a 6 point bull 15 minutes from the truck after hunting hard all week! There is nothing like last minute success is there.
Big animals for sure. The words, "now the work really begins" surely becomes a reality once they are down.
Nice pics and stories. Paul
T-Roy,
My rubber boots had gotten destroyed back at the main camp in a freak accident that no one was to blame for.....since I had a pair of 18" Kenetrek's with me, I just slid the liners inside of garbage bags, and then put them into the outer boots....it worked for a while, but eventually , you know that the water was going to find a way in.....
Regarding how many times I have looked at the moose rack....it's been a few, for sure....
