This particular species of Hyena is not importable to the US...which was totally OK with my wife!!
His skull will most likely be top 10 SCI which is just a bonus to the extremely cool hunt. I am having a reproduction skull made in SA that will be sent home with the rest of my animals.
My PH and I were set up in a small ground blind about 40 yards from a bait site. The site consisted of a metal steak pounded into the ground with the Civet Cat I shot the night before attached to it.
After about 15 minutes of sitting perfectly still, no talking or moving...I started to hear what I thought was sticks breaking. It is SOOO dark that I cant even see my PH sitting next to me but I stay perfectly still and try and control my breathing. Whatever is outside the blind is getting very close...like 5 feet close...and is breathing heavily. The sounds of breaking sticks seems awfully loud...which I come to find out later is the Hyena crunching old bones within 5 feet of the blind.
The bait is lit up with a small LED flood light. I see a dark object move across my blind hole...and then move back again. At this point my PH whispers "shoot if you can!!"
I cant see a damn thing...let alone something to shoot at. He starts a countdown...which I quickly realize is when he is going to light it up with the spot light. I quickly get ready...light goes on and boom...there he is standing at 30 yards. A shot and a bark later...he was dead.

When I got back to the lodge and showed the owners the video, they asked why I didn't shoot it! Just minutes after this guy left, I also had two Honey Badgers come in. Those would have been another first for me as well, but I chose not to shoot them either. I'm not sure what I was thinking that day, but I just enjoyed seeing and photographing them.

My Waterbuck. Don't know the score but horn lengths were 31'' on both.
Looking at all of your animals again is really impressive. I had nowhere near the collective quality of trophies on my first African hunt. But,then again, I didn't hunt at Limcroma on my first hunt.
That sable will be bigger for you on the next trip...
