I drew New Mexico 16D for the Sept. 19-24 season this year. It might be a mistake to have even put in for the draw because I was planning on spending my time chasing bighorn sheep in Wyoming. Such a terrible dilema!...and it really was as I took quite of bit of time to tell my wife that I drew another tag this year. I don't know how to balance helping my kids with their local Utah deer tags and WORK! If I wasn't self-employed I would quit for 2 months to get it all done. Anyway, any advice on this elk unit?...or on Wyoming unit 8/23 for sheep? Capt. Kirk

Yeah, I cancelled my NM app (same hunt you applied for) after I found out I drew Sheep (Sept 4-19) and Moose (Oct 1-14) tags elsewhere. But you drew one of the toughest-to-draw tags in the entire state (I believe ~1% odds applying unguided). But if I had to pick one hunt, it'd still be a no-brainer for me.....Sheep! However, can't you consider doing both, especially with your location? Isn't the Wyoming BHS season 6 or 7 weeks long?

I certainly plan on trying both. I do live right in between both tags. Time is my biggest issue. I guess I will just have to suffer!! I also never thought to cancel ny NM application. Probably wouldn't have drawn the NM hunt if I would have had plenty of time and no sheep hunt! And yes, the sheep has priorty.

Hello Guys, I just found out that I was lucky enough to draw a 16D Sept 15-24 archery tag for New Mexico. I understand this is a great unit with a number of roads and access. I am willing to walk/pack in and I don't need a guide, although I would be willing to pay for one just for daily services. There are lots of different maps out there including google earth. If you have any map preferences to suggest I would appreciate it. Any thoughts on areas to start scouting or contact names would also be greatly appreciated. Willing to do some horse trading for good information. If you know of someone I could speak to let me know. Thank you

I hunted there about 20 years ago, but I bet the elk are still in the same spot. Send me a PM and I will try to give you some coordinates.

you do not need an outfitter in this unit. the elk are all over the unit. if it is dry find water and there will be elk close by. send me a pm if you need more info. not a very big unit get some good maps. hunted this unit since the early 1970's. great tag, congrats. my wife and I have two rifle tags for the same unit.

The Gila is a special place. I think you meant 15th thru 24th? You shouldn't have any problem finding elk. When they are vocal it is non stop! Perfect your calling. These herd bulls are very reluctant to leave their hares but can be done if you are close enough. good luck!
