Only 6 months till September
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
As it does every year, the counting started the day last season ended! ;-)
2 trips planned this year, but I still have 6 months and 5-7 days...
No trips planned yet, but I may think of something. I thought for sure cityhunter would be thread owner here.
No BowMad, city's thread would've been titled: 6mo to Sept elk. Lou's grammar sticks out like the other Lou's junk in a hip x-ray!
174 days 11 hours 34 minutes and 50 seconds till my first elk hunt this year
I can't make it this year, but I sure wish I could... These threads are already driving me crazy!!
Best I can do right now is pore over maps and Google Earth, studying the new area I'll be learning this summer and fall. I'm as excited as I've been in a long time, starting totally fresh, plunging into the unknown with new adventures ahead.
It's giving me the motivation to do the daily PT on this new hip, which is coming along GREAT. And Will, the junk is doing fine too, now that the feeling has come back from that spooky spinal block. Closest I've ever come to thinking I was holding somebody else's willy.
:-)
Lou, even if you cant feel it, you should know it's yours by the weight.
Looking forward to exploring some brand new territory again in the wilds of wonderful Wyoming!
Nothing better than popping over the edge of the rim to look down into a basin you found on the topo and it looks even better than you imagined. Then to sit down to start glassing and a bull sounds off in the middle of one of the parks. Goose bumps.....
Monarch that must be just the mirror image pic off your backyard pond? ;-)
Flipped it in my phone and that is an awesome view!
I don't know how to flip them over, but I know which way to tilt my phone when taking a pic to prevent the upside down pic :)
Are you left handed Monarch?
"Sorry to f up this awesome thread with my stupidity in advance..."
It has nothing to do with stupidity and everything to do with adapting.
The correct way to take a pic is both ways. Take a pic, flip the phone 180 degrees, take another. That way you're golden and don't need to take a 14 year old everywhere to explain things.
Nick knows how to flip photos over. Maybe he can help.
I only got pics of this guy. Im gonna look for him some more in 6 months
Yes, YEs, YYYEEESSSS!!!! I've been pouring over maps,my bedroom looks like I'm planning a foreign invasion, calling WCOs, spending at least an hour a day on bing maps and google earth, shooting everyday, and practice calling everyday.
I missed out last year and I have called everyone I know and work with to tell them,"I'm unavailable for the month of September".
I think about elk hunting as much as a 16 year old thinks about sex.
I'm counting down the days.
I'm with fubar and AndyJ. One hundred eighty eight days, eleven hours and forty one minutes! Fubar will be heading out a little earlier. I'm trying not to hold it against him.
Glad you shared your willy holding C.V. with us Lou. You should have your hands on a different kind of package by the end of the week or so.
I live in ELk Country, and am more concerned on drawing a buck tag .... April 1 Co DOW Draw date, but my Unit is OTC and a 2nd elk can always be harvested during the Cow Elk Dec on Private Lands .
We have so may bear .....One outfitter gives Free Bear with an ELk Hunt Booked . ( $4500 on 41,00 acres of Private lands Only .) I arrowed 3 bear the last 3 Spet , 2 made P and Y and a Blond tagged bear came 280 miles until he ran into me. A Forrest Surveyor of 40 years, that worked all over Westenr Colorado said the one area in the Photo has more elk and bear pre Sq mile than anywhere in CO. Water /Habitat and Private lands Proteced to give them a refuge Had an eastern Bowhunter visiting here for 6 days and he missied 5 shots on Elk and Bear ... On Public Forrest Lands . He will have more than One Pin next Sept and a rangefinder next fall.
Hunting on that side of the lake this year!
The pic of that waller don't turn me on...we got hawgs that do that.
Can't wait to get back to the mountains!
You guys are killing me....nice pictures. Now I'm counting.
Lou, we'll know it's you by the drag marks. :)
Keep more photo's coming - come on Sept.
The day after a mid September blizzard. It seems I'm always counting the days until September 1st!!
the Aspen patch on the other side of that tall mountain is the place to be.
Have a great bow hunt. BB
Can't wait to get back into old hunting grounds. It's been a long time waiting to get enough points. The preparation is going to be as fun as the hunt.
Now if the bull in BB's [excellent] photo would just take a step forward on his offside front leg... ;-D
6 months until I shoot my first elk! I just don't know in which state yet.
Concerning the bull photo I posted on this thread----here's a bit of bowhunter education for you. Look close at the photo and you will see a little mark on the bulls front leg, in the light color and about center of the leg. If you were to put an arrow two inches in front of that spot, at the same height, you would watch that bull fall! It most likely would just stand there, like the one in the video Pete posted, but it wouldn't live much longer than that one did either. It might make it 30 yards. And there is not need to wait for the bull to move. Its a perfect shot just as it is.
Have a great bow hunt. BB
Monarch, in my younger, wilder days I woke up on a few mornings with that upside-down view out the tent door....
Jaq, LMAO !!
Wonder what my bull is doing today ???
One special season back in about 1980 I killed a bull on opening morning, packed him out that afternoon and the next morning, then drove from elk camp to Red Rocks with my best friend and hunting partner to see the Kinks (leaving behind a couple cuties we met at the concert - priorities, you know..) drove back to camp late that night and killed a P&Y muley the next day. Nothing to do for the rest of the hunt except hang out in camp and help pack other critters.
I think I had a couple of upside-down mornings during that week, safe in camp and surrounded by the best of friends.
Those were the days when we were free to enjoy being young and dumb and it didn't matter much. Times have changed!
Haha! Good stuff, guys!! I used to get so jacked up the day before the season I HAD to drink myself to sleep. This often resulted in some early morning hacking but I never missed a hunt! These days I'm a bit more relaxed but a lil whiskey still helps me sleep
If you could see through the scope you be looking at a nice 330" 6x.
Hope I draw this unit again.

I love this Country!
Best of Luck, Jeff (Bowsite Sponsor)
I'll never draw this unit again!
If I'm lucky enough to draw it will be 5 months from now! Don't really know too much about hunting elk but really looking forward to "trying again"! C
Charlie, elk hunting is easy.
As TBM says, all you have to do is go somewhere where nobody else is hunting, honk on a call, and they come running!
I'm guessing it will be another 2 years before I get back out for an elk hunt. Bummer. :(
169 days 9 hours 45 minutes until elk season!
I'd skip turkey season and go straight to Sept if I could
Jaquomo, is it really that easy ???
I may try my luck at it then;)
Willieboat, took 18 resident points last year, and with point-a-year creep I'd be about 125 years old before drawing it again.
But if I had that many points I wouldn't hunt that unit again anyway. IMO, there are better units now, which can be drawn with way fewer points.
The easy part was spotting "nice" bulls from afar. But finding and getting into stickbow range of a 350+ bull on public land in that country, considering all the elements, was damn challenging. We got lucky and arrowed two, but I'd not recommend it, especially with that many points required.
Bulls are dropping now so picking up bone will take a little of the edge off. Also bear season is just right around the corner to keep me occupied for another month and then it is time for summer scouting.
Not sure where this pic came from but I wish it was me. Lets try again
NO ELK TAG as of yet !!! u guys that live out west are so lucky !!!1
The Wyo grizz would be pissed if they don't get another shot at you this year, city!
My son and I will be making our first elk hunt in Chama this September. My son-in-law and good buddy will be joining us. This will not only be there first elk hunt as well, but my Son-in-laws first bow hunt. I do hope to get him out in a couple weeks for a exotic cull hunt. Maybe a nice sika or blackbuck female for the table would be a good thing. Good luck to all and be safe.
This was one of my old spots when I had horses
This is the one that got away
Great photos Dan! That first one sure looks elky
"NO ELK TAG as of yet"
You let me know if you decide you want to change that Louis. You're gonna have to cave and come hunt this crap elk state one day
thanks Will any chance for deer !!!
Hey Lou u sound like Nick he says the same thing the reason he don't chase elk is there 2 easy to kill he's going to wait till he gets old to kill one!!!!
I bet that horse's rump was rubbed something fierce from that stick. Hopefully you didn't have to go too far. :)
man, it's just 5 months from Saturday till season opens here in CO! I'm ready! Now if I only knew for sure where I'm hunting! Am I going to have to drive an hour or 3 hours???
COunting down the months, not days yet. Still waiting to see where we are hunting.
Only pic I have on my work PC. Ignore my ugly mug
I did my first elk hunt in 2012. I can't wait till Sept to go again. It's only March and that's all I think about.
Jeez...I have yet to go on my first elk hunt, and all I can think about is September
