But, after I get my 11th point this year, I am seeing a bunch of archery tags come into reach and an elk with a bow would mean a lot more than another with a muzzleloader.
So with 11 or 12 points, what unit would you put in for.
Here are some of the options:
Wasatch Mountains,
Plateau, Fishlake-Thousand Lake,
Panguitch Lake,
Mt. Dutton,
La Sal, La Sal Mountains,
Central Mountains, Manti, and possibly
Book Cliffs, Bitter Creek-South
Thx for any tips you might have.
Second choice. Panguitch Lake. I archery deer hunt down there and just really like the area! I see nice bulls down there.
Third Choice. Book Cliffs. It's just a part of the state I want a good excuse to visit...and my co-workers have had success there.
Early season UT dates are always an issue so I understand water holes, glassing movement from feed to bed, etc. may be the tactics needed.
The high tag numbers of the Wasatch and recent massacre make me hesitant on that unit.
Quality of hunt (no water hole battles), adventure, and a realistic chance that I'll be hunting where 340" bulls live is the goal.
It will be 3 years before I have 13 to apply with as I went into this years draw with 10.
Are those units worth the wait over what's attainable in 1 or 2 years?
Saw three bulls I'm certain were well above 350". Had one of those big boys under 30 yards, just waiting for an angle when a spike picked me off and barked. That's the biggest problem in the Books IMO...the good bulls have harems...and that's a lot of noses and eyes to fool.
The last two weeks of archery, the bulls were very vocal. Was into 320-330" bulls almost every day.
I would bowhunt elk in the Books again in a heartbeat!
You have been more than generous when I have asked you to share your knowledge on other states elk units for my close friends that have drawn those other states units.
Ya know what unit I want ya to go for!
I just wish these DWR guys would give 2 tags minimum per non-ressy bow elk unit....
1 for max point draw and 1 for all the rest type deal...
For some reason at the RAC meetings they have NO ears of reason----
I am sorry about that.
Any thing I can do---for sure you just have to give me a question.
Good luck, Robb
Robb, thx for weighing in considering how much you and Peg have going on. Feel free to reach out to me by email for anything I can do. We have plenty of time to strategize, so nothing for me to worry about now except that you guys will be ok!
I sent her a PM back.
Best wishes
Thx
Let me see if I can find and bring to the top for ya.
Good luck, Robb

They really messed up my planning with their adjustments this year.
Bill, i was in the Book Cliffs a couple years ago at the end of any weapon, beginning of muzzleloader. There were a LOT of vehicles and orange running around. I'm not sure how it compares to other LE units, but it was a zoo imo.
