Utah Scenery Pics and Hunt
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
I am here in Utah with a Spike/Cow Elk tag and Mule Deer tag. I will be hunting a few different units and then decide which Unit to apply for next year for my one and only Bull Elk tag. Much of this will be scouting so there may be no kill but I should get some great scenery photos! I will add a few each day as long as I have service. Hope you enjoy the pictures! C
The drive from Colorado to Utah on I 70 is spectacular!
Now the Elk and Deer country is very different!

Thanks for sharing "C". Your drive across I-70 brings back sweet memories of driving across the Wild Horse Canyon to my hunt in Utah in 1981. Some beautiful country.

A while back there was a thread about which bowsiter we'd like share a camp with. I think Charlie would be at the top of mine.

You are in a great area with very little lost time with traveling to Utah LE bow--Fishlake, Monroe, Pahvant or even a pinch south into the Boulder!!!
Plus that bow Spike/cow tag is good in 'em all----
Some dandy velvet muleys in your 'tag' unit----
Enjoy,
Good luck, Robb
Best of luck Charlie. Looking forward to all of the photos!

Charlie I'll be there hunting Moose the last of Sept. Stan
Internet is spotty! Another beautiful morning! About 45 degrees! Here's a picture from my am glassing area!
I hiked through some dense fog this morning but it was too dark for a photo before I hit the trees. I have a stand set at a pond, but it's been slow. But here's a photo I took with my phone from my stand as it broke day light.
I meant to say good luck to everyone out in the woods. Be safe and have a great time.
Here's another photo I just took.
DIWF- Do it with friends!
I'm sure there was room in that truck for me too!!!!!!!
Talking on the phone...Lol! Bill....
BB is a stud!
Good luck, Robb
I Am camping with BB, his son Cody and Jeff Dumas (DConcrete). Great guys and BB is a hard core, serious hunter and as we all know the class act of Bowsite! Lucky to be amongst these men!
Another day in paradise!
Good luck to you guys. BB always brings good luck.
Wasn't seeing anything at the last waterhole I have been sitting so switched places hoping for a bit better luck. It's 7 pm and nothing yet. Here's a phone photo I just took. It's from my stand that's a steep climb from the bottom. Of a guy gets one it's all down hill on the pack! As Robb would say "Ha Ha".
Good luck Bill, how's the knees?
Good luck Charlie! Looks beautiful there.
I have lived in "Alabama The Beautiful" most of my life. I have also spent some time out West and I can truly say that Utah, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, and the such, are God's Country. It is so easy to take awesome photo's there because the country is so awe inspiring to take in. Good Luck.
Sounds like you are in great company. Good luck guys!
what a great view from your stand, Bill!
Nice photos guys. Have a very memorable hunt.
Charlie if your camping with Bill you had better lock up your Butter.BB is a butter freak
Is that a Prison Term bigdan.....haha
Packin' out a bull down hill is always a luxury.
You guys are living the dream down there!
Good luck, Robb
This photo was just taken. (7:00am). From my stand as the morning sun begins to light the mountain tops.
As my son and I hiked to our stands in the dark, he noticed this small owl on a tree branch. As I dove in my pack for one of my cameras he snapped this shot with my phone. By the time I got my camera out and flas. Ready, it flew.
We have been in the stands for about three hours and have not seen or heard one big game animal.
It' has lightened and with my back to the sun, this is what I see.
And here's the view I have looking straight ahead.
Bill, Your treestand is upside down! lol
I was thinking he fell out! Someone get that man some help!
What fun! Elk hunting is not for "girly men"! More activity each day!
Tonight's view. Hopefully right side up!
Are you 2 going to do that Christmas dance gig?? haha
Good luck, Robb
Just said good night to today's sun. There's less than 30 minutes of shooting light left. So far not single critter watered. My son did spot a huge bull on the hill in the attached photo. It was well over a mile away and you could see he had a huge rack. Sadly my son has to return to work after tomorrow mornings hunt.
Last evening as the last light faded I told my son I did not want to shoot an elk that late. He whispered to me to let out a few bugles. I had hardly finished when he said here comes an elk. Long story short a 280 type 6x6 came running right in. Soon a 300 ish 5x6 came running down off the hill. The first bull drank but the second bull stopped just short of the pond and for about 10 minutes just tore up a small tree. Then a bull way below us bugled and tbe takee let out one and down off the hill he went.
I tried, both with my phone and camera to take some photos but it was just too dark.
My son leaves about noon today so we are sitting a pond we call Scabin.
Here a photo I took just previous to getting in the stands.
It windy as all heck this morning.
Has the photography gotten better since BB took Charlie's phone?? :)
Great stuff guys!
Lots of guys hunting this Labor Day weekend so perhaps they'll push one by me:)
Temps have dropped and the rain is giving you guys a couple days break-----go get 'em!
Good luck, Robb
While out and about yesterday I met this terrific family out bow hunting together. Father, mother, two kids and an exchange student from Germany who's parents are Chinese. What an amazing year abroad for this girl. This family is doing it right! Great folks in the great state of Utah! Labor Day so I am laboring hard:) C
Great thread guys! Go get 'em!
Mark
Lots of people around out there this weekend I am sure. They will mostly disappear tomorrow. Now is the time!!
+1 Whip
It should really drop down on other people being around this week.
Good luck, Robb
Lots of people moved out and now we are wIting for the elk to move in. HA HA.
We had quite a 12 hours the other day that was quite shocking to all, but I will let Charlie tell you about that if he prefers to!
It's been very windy and hunting has been more difficult than I expected, and the photos I like and hope to take area out non existant, save the scenery pics.
I with my recent knee replacements I choose to place stands at what I thought were two great locations. But about 10 days of hunting them has showmen me I don't know JACK!
But I the way to the stand I am sitting tonight I pass by a MAN amongst boys so to speak.
It's a ponderosa pine that can't help but grab your eyes and play with your mind and let you know there is a MAKER, that on occasion let's you know He's around. Such is this tree.
A few nights ago we had a tremendous wind storm. I was sitting in Jeff's camper eating dinner when BB came in and said an Aspen tree had just fallen right near my Tacoma. We all went to look and here's what happened. My tailgate was down (I sleep in my pick-up) and the Aspen hit the left side. 4 inches left and it would have missed me, 3 feet to the right and the truck and if I was in it would have been crushed. Say your prayers and be careful! C
Charlie has a spike tad which is good in a number of different limited entry units. Last week I spent a great deal of time with my son Cody and Jeff's son Kolton, hoping they could fill their tags with a spike, but no such luck. Now that they have both gone home and Charlie is hunting a different area, guess what happened?
This little guy came in and spent at least a half hour with me. I got quite a few photos with my Panasonic camera and then switched to my cell phone so I could post a few photos for you people.
Here's another of the same spike.
Other than the 280 ish and bigger 5x6 , I told about previously, the branched antler bulls are doing a great job of avoiding me.
Charlie, glad that incident didn't do any more damage. Stay safe and have a great rest of your hunt.
Whoa! That was close...glad everyone is okay!
The day before that happened, Jeff had taken his antelope as he had a tag in this area. And since the winds were still so strong that morning we decided to go year down his blinds. We decided to take my old truck which my wife had driven down to spend a few days with her stud! Ha ha
It's a 1996. Ford that never had one dent in it. I had just recently had a safety inspection done and when doing them they gave to pull the back wheels to check the brakes
So we hit the highway and are tooling down the pavement about 55 when the rear wheel comes off and we almost turn over. Needless to say I can no longer say my old truck no longer had no dents as it took out the rear fender big time.
I am just happy it happened when I was driving and not my wife as she drives much faster and who knows what could have happened. We found 4 of the lugs they failed to tighten and got it back in operation, although it was no easy task.
I think she will leave today and I told her she has to drive no more than 55 as she doesn't have a spare.
But all in all we dodged several bullets and no one got hurt and to be honest we were all very fortunate.
Wow. Glade everyone is ok. Surely a trip you will not soon forget.
Wow!! To close for comfort!! Glad everyone is alright.
Looks like you guys are having a good time.
Man that was a too close for comfort event!
Glad you are safe and that your Tacoma isn't damage.
You guys have good temps and weather for the next few days----
Keep after them Dang elk.
Good luck, Robb
Thanks for sharing Charlie and BB, good luck!
BB, you remind me of a James Bond movie.,,, Never Say Never Again..... =D
Charlie.... keep your friends close and your enemies closer.... even Inspector Clouseau could spot the axe laying on the tree..... heheheh....
Stay safe folks! Good luck and, what was that phrase again... oh yeah
Have a great bowhunt!
I sat with Charlie last night and this morning and both were busts. We heard not one bugle and only saw one elk at a great distance tbrough my binos. We did have a couple deer pass by quite close.
So this afternoon Charlie went ti a different area to check out. And for the first time I am sitting some neat wallows by Scabin. I don't know why I am doing this as there hast been a bull woke here this year. But it's a neat area tucked back in from usually heavy used trail.
Of all the places I planned to hunt I had the highest hopes that it might be line pine wallows, a place some of you might remember from my San Juan hunt back in 2005. How wrong I wS. But it's still a neat place and hopefully it will turn before my hunt ends on the 12th.
Charliescspike hunt ends tomorrow in the limited units he's been checking out, but he can still hunt elk in the general areas if he chooses. He can hunt deer in his deer area until the 12th.
If things work out right my buddy Jeff wl return late tomorrow and hopefully be able to spend the last week of my hunt with me or until I can fill a tag.
Here's hoping Charlie can fill his spike tag this evening.
It took 11 days but I got my Utah Spike bull Elk! Got the shot on video too! Yippie
Congratulations Charlie. Thanks to you and Bill for hauling us along for the trip!
Congrats Charlie, sent you a pm
Charlie,
Way to hang in there and bring it all together. Congrats man. How bout the story for those of us still sitting behind a desk trying to stimulate the economy?
good stuff...congratulations
Attaboy, Charlie!! Now come kill one in Colorado
Awesome! Congrats Charlie!
Way to go Charlie! I think you should get him mounted!!:)
After the work is done...more details please.
Congrats on the harvest. I know nothing about Elk hunting (only that I would like to bow hunt them one day) or Elk management. Is there a purpose for harvesting a spike? or is it just an opportunity to hunt an elk? Thanks
Congrats! Gonna be some good eating there...
Thanks guys! Just dropped off the meat at a processor in Grand Jct. and heading back to Utah. BB has one more week to get his bull! I will hang around a while, chase some Mulies then head to SW Colorado sometime next week!
BB is an amazing wealth of knowledge and still at age 73 hard core. Up at 4:30 every day and on his quad by 5 am. Here he is checking Bowsite from a water hole stand!
Congrats, Charlie!
Thanks to you and Bill for bringing us along!
Congrats Charlie!
Go get 'em Bill!
Congrats Charlie and good luck on the future hunts.
Perfect ending to the week Charlie - congratulations!!
Congrats Charlie! It looks like you will be hauling some meat back to New England!
That one of the prettiest elk I've ever seen. I think I would have had to lay down and give that fuzzy neck a hug. That has to be some great eating. Congrats. Now get a deer too.
Way to go C-man!!
For sure get him mounted and have similar Age Class Bulls on our Elk Wall in the TR!
Happy for ya man----
Good luck, Robb
PS--kinda screwy deal with 'Ike'...sad....
Good going Charlie a fuzzy 1x1. I shot one of them years ago. But mine was hard horned. Most guys that are going elk hunting for the first time need to look into Utah. They can hunt a limited area and learn it then start apply for a limited bull tags in an area they have hunted. Makes to much sence not to do it.
Whoooooooooo! Way to go Charlie...congrats!
Good luck Bill!
Mark
Another fantastic sunrise! 9/6/14
Nice one Charlie. Keep the photos coming
Very cool photos and stories! Nice job on the good eating spike Charlie! Good Luck on the rest of your hunt Bill! Stay safe guys!
I sure wish a big bull would come out of nowhere and surprise me like that last photo did. I have no idea how that happened. Hopefully this IS the 61 year old lover I meant to post.
Congrats Charlie....we need a story and the video!
Gonna be some terrific meat! About a week before I was walking a trail and 4 cows/calves crossed in front of me! It looked like a funnel crossing so I set up a ground blind. Went back the PM hunt on 9/4 and this spike and a small branch antlered bull came by! Had the video camera set up in my shooting lane and got the shot on film. He went 35 yards and that was that! Shot him at 7 pm, pics, quartered him up, took the front legs and back straps back that night and got the rest the next am! Very pleased that this whitetail guy connected in the mountains of Utah! C
Things are starting to change. Night are cooler, and the leaves and looks of the country have a tint of fall.
Keep after em BB, fingers crossed for you !!
Great thread--GO GETEM BOYS !!!!!!!
BB's Broadhead! With his shot placement threads and this broadhead it's no wonder the animals fall over in under 50 yards! Gotta love your broadhead for all the right reasons! Bam!!
Monday AM, so "back to work"! Heard some bugles while getting dressed today! Got a new area to check out for Mulies.
Well I returned one final time to ponderosa pond. I got here before daylight when it was calm and quiet. It's now pretty windy.
I was told about this spot by a good friend of mine who does not have the patience to sit. He has to be covering ground on foot. I understand that as for many many years I was the same way.
He hunts this general area most every year with a spike tag and always sees some nice bulls. Several years back a mutual friend of ours drew a big bull tag in this unit and came over and set up a stand and on the first morning he sat he took a bull in excess of 380.
When we came over this summer to set it up. We worked here for a few hours and before leaving I set up a trail camera and when we returned eay the next morning, there had been 5 or 6 bulls in that night and 3 or 4 minutes before we arrived.
I was pumped and excited to say the least. And when I returned to hunt there were thousands of photos of domestic cows but many photos of nice bulls. But in all the photos there was not one single cow elk nor one spike bull. I also noticed the elk were in here all the time until about the 22 nd of August and then they just disappeared. Because of the Bowsite antelope hunt I did not get here until Aug 24th. Just a few days too late for this location.
I had hopes they would gather their cows and be back but such has not been the case, so I will remove my trail camera and not return until I come to get the stands. A lesson learned a bit too late for me this year.
But it's a neat area that I enjoyed and a great area in which to glass distance hillsides wherevi normally see a few elk.
Sitting in the salt lake airport. Just leaving after spending time in park city and sundance. Absolutely beautiful country. Saw moose and mulies. Heard elk bugling a couple of mornings. Can't wait to come back with a bow in my hand.
Congrats Charlie on your spike elk.
Thanks to you and BB for sharing your hunt. I truly enjoy reading your stories and your pictures.
Rob
Well done, Charlie....looking forward to seeing the video (hint).
Great thread... Keep it coming... Ed F
Congrats Charlie, well done!
Keep the play by play coming, guys!
Best of Luck Jeff
BB has three more full days to fill his tag. Archery season ends Friday 9/12. I have left to explore other areas and will be in SW Colorado soon for another hunt.
Good luck BB and thanks for hosting me in your camp. Also thanks to Jeff Dumas (handle dconcrete) and Bill's son Cody!
Travel safe Charlie. See you in a few days!
Just a add on, oldest ones I saw....Bill, how'd the last few days go?
