Getting about half packed up. Will load coolers tomorrow and point the ram horns west. My plan is to revolutionize elk hunting, making deep south turkey hunting a prerequisite to elk hunting. I will be using elk calls but turkey tactics that include some strategies that have never been told, possibly never been discovered. I'll be trying for a bull in the neighborhood of 320 p & y. That's assuming I even make it out there. not sure the old dodge is up to the challenge.
old dodge how old? a 320 bull that's a easy kill type bull , many bowsiters pass on them dinks ;> I figure if u make it there and back consider yr hunt a success !
My '99 would go from OR to AL and back again, then ask for more. But it's not a Dodge.
Some things are best left undiscovered...
Mine don't have any a/c so I'm I can't wait to get out of this heat and humidity. Going to be a refreshing change. Forecast looks loke cooler temps and rain by the middle of the week and that is about when I will start hunting. I'm so glad I choose this week instead of last.
I'm not packing any luck...just a sack full of Turkey hunting hunting experience. If one just happens luckily by, I will have to pass. Just like turkeys, there not legal unless you call em in....and then it has to be the one you are trying to call...no satillites coming in from the side. They get a pass too.
TBM, granted I'm not you, but I would take the first legal bull or cow that comes within range! Anyways, hope you out one down! Wvarcher
One thing is absolutely certain ...........he will return with a lot of bull
I'm just going to see how I feel once I get out there. I already feel like the pre hunt has been a success and a positive for me long term. I've done so much cardio I really feel a lot better physically and I feel much lighter of my feet. This helps with work and I'm sure if I stick with it things will be easier this spring. If I like elk hunting and the mountains I might start training year round and who knows what the results of that will be. I can say for sure that going vertical up a tree this fall will be easier if I don't get injured before then. It will only be 3 weeks after I get back when our southern border deer season will start. This trip definitely makes hunting seem close enough to year round that preparation will never need a break.
Don't forget what I told you
itshot's Link
this pic is about to get busier
good luck with the revolution TBM!
Oustanding illustration Jim... even down to the tracking spiders and ham blaster!
TBM .. good luck on your DIY Elk Adventure.
You may want to heed WVARCHER's post. If it's 'bigger than what you've taken previously' you may want to put your tag on it. While I've never hunted elk, I have several DIY buddies who've gone year after year only to eat 'track soup' because they 'Passed on a Thursday Bull, because it was Monday'.
Good luck.
Good luck, hope you make it happen. It's been interesting reading your posts. Going on my first elk hunt next week, sooting anything that's legal.
When am I going to be there
In about 30Hrs per mapquest!
Good luck! Don't get too wrapped up in the outcome. Bowhunting is 99% journey and 1% destination. The 99% is where we can find most of the satisfaction.
hold my beer and watch this....
The west will never be the same, that is for sure.
I have never heard someone talk so smart about something they have never done before. -There is confidence and there is ignorance. Thinking this one is leaning towards the latter.
Great illustration above! Thinking that TBM could have his own modern day Elmer Fud cartoon?! "West and wewaxation at wast"
Sincerest of luck - be careful and HAVE FUN
May your boots find you listening to bulls screaming in the cool mountain air at 3:30 am while you anticipate whats to come.
You should have stopped in Scott county on your way through MS - I would have bought you a cheese burger.
good luck. represent the southern boys well -
IT MAY ALREADY BE TO LATE FOR THAT!
Good luck TBM. The three of us tagged out on speed goats and are headed to Texas. Take up where we left off !
you know, im not really sure if im rooting for you, or hoping you get a screaming case of giardia and spend most of your time on a makeshift crapper...
michael
OMG, TBM, I am a master tailor, and I see that you are driving with scissors on your dash board. You could kill yourself if those fly back at you in an accident. I have contacted Mississippi State troopers to try to track you down and get it corrected. This is no laughing matter, those scissors should be properly secured! I hope the troopers are able to catch up with you, this is way more serious than any electrical code...
Good luck...kill a good one !
This thread has great potential.... Ed F
Have fun TBM! We want lots of pics too
Mild tremors reported across Montana this evening. Full fledged earthquakes to follow tomorrow and the next day.
Breaking news update. Hunters are reporting that vast herds of elk are fleeing the state, setting off seismic sensors and fooling geologists into thinking we are having an earthquake. Forget, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" Out here it's "TBM is coming, TBM is coming!" Rumor has it that several grizzly bears have been found sucking their thumbs and laying in a fetal position.
Good for you TBM. Can't believe after all this talk you're actually going. You'll never regret the decision to head west to elk hunt. Have fun. Be safe.
Ok city...near midnite. Still driving.
This is going to be bigger than Johnny Football's first NFL game.
There will undoubtedly be songs and books made about this event.
Good luck, at least we know the story will be interesting!
MT elk update. Slow weekend and quiet for the most part. Big weather moving in today. highs in the 40s in the valleys next 3 days. That should turn things on. Good luck and be safe. HUNT
How'd you like having to drive a staple in one of these
Good luck TBM.... Don't be giving any legal bulls a pass. Its about making the most of any opportuninty and as a first trip, you shouldn't look any gift horses....
>>>>-------->
Hiway Hilton... have to move a lot to the cab ..sleeping bag and natress pad underneath... not a lot of head room.
Drive through bathroom was busy last nite
Yes, indeedy do, this will be a classic tread. Good luck big guy!!!!!
At least you can go flyfishing if you don't find any elk.
Is something wrong with me?? I get on bowsite just to check the adventures of TBM!! I may not be heading out west but at least I feel like it sometimes!! Good luck! Wvarcher
I was scrolling down. I see those two bottles with the gold hue liquid. I am thinking; "surely not".
I scroll further...and "yes it is." TBM never ceases to amaze me. Keep it coming TBM...I am always anticipating the next thing.
I think you need to hydrate a little better before you get to CO.
Ah, figured out the revolution. Home brew cow estrus blend, piss in a bottle and tape above your manifold for a 30 hr drive. Once at your hunting spot distribute evenly on your favorite camo.
If fish oil is good for you, why do they pack tuna in vegetable oil?
A camper shell with French doors is what I need.
"If fish oil is good for you, why do they pack tuna in vegetable oil?"
Entertainment value - a 10 Getting smarter as a result of his posts - priceless?
What do you expect your first day of hunting to be?
Wednesday evining. I'm loosing Wed am because I don't have bow and arrow licenses. Will scout then in the am.
Why do you "drive on a parkway" and "park on a driveway"?
I would think with all the time saved by pissing in a bottle you'd be hunting tonight.
Why am I thinking this is like a Jimmy Bigtime episode?
Have you made it to the New Jersey turnpike yet? Hoboken or bust!
Good Luck!!! Just remember they are just big turkeys, with an excellent sniffer!
Turkey tactics for elk. HMMMM. You might be on to something there. Just remember, don't aim for the head.
It's going to snow out west this week TBM, hopefully you brought some of that next level insulation with you.
It's going to snow tonight here in NW Colorado at higher elevation.
"There is confidence and there is ignorance".
Confidence + Ignorance = Arrogance.
TBM is none of these things. He has long since surpassed any description that can be put into words.
The revolutionary next level thinking of this man will shatter all expectations of anything Webster can produce in a Dictionary. You are about to go on a journey beyond. When this is all over with, the sun could be setting in the east. Don't underestimate a good O'l boy.
Elk Hunting will never be the same. Just sit back and try to envision the trip through his eyes. Good Luck.
Good Luck man...Hope you kill a big one.
Please don't post a pic when you scratch a hole next to the aspen tree and do your business.
That would be lower level not next level. This forum is not ready for that.
Good luck on your hunt and be safe!
Enjoy your trip, and stay safe. A lot of good folks here are pulling for you. Then again most of us pull for all the guys and gals on Bowsite. Keep us up to speed on your hunt.
Good luck today TBM, can't wait to get home tonight and hear of your adventures!
Thanks for the start of a wild adventure, keep us posted! Good Luck be careful.
TBM,
It is amazing that you are driving across some beautiful country and the best photo you can post is 2 bottles of piss on a dashboard while at a truckstop. Then that people find this amusing!
You can so better- rise to the occasion !!!!!!!!
Real elk hunters need wide mouth Gatorade bottles
.....jus sayin
TBM, I hope that isn't the only "Trophy Pic" we get to see!
"Real elk hunters need wide mouth Gatorade bottles."
Damn near spit coffee on my screen. That's funny! The weather is going in the tank here in Montana which should only help matters. The bulls were with cows and screaming until mid morning in Eastern Montana on opening weekend. Luck!
with al the overcompensating tbm has been doing here he could probably use one of them squirt bottles with the twist nozzle end...
Norseman,
Good stuff, man!! Don't you just love banter?!!
TBM,
You have typed "WOW" twice, but no follow up. What were you referring to? The scenery? an Elk Rack on someone's vehicle? a HDYLMN sticker?....or are the tracking spiders following your truck?
The "wow" was mostly likely a few minutes after his stop at a "herbal" store in CO
He just realized the flat country was the Everglades
Are there Simmons broadheads on those elk hunting arrows of yours?
Wondering if the old dodge has rubber seats, I'm sure there is at least one bottles worth of piss on the seat and floor.
WOW! is an old southern acronym, stands for Hold On To Your Britches!
TBM as another southern turkey hunter that's hunted elk I'm gonna help you out. If you call in a bull with a cow call he will usually do something a gobbler WILL NOT do. Just before he gets in range he may circle downwind of where you called from. If you get some action you WILL remember this post. The key will be whether it's before or after the bull comes in...
He's either in the mountains or in the ditch. Time will tell.
Maybe the WOW! is from when he tried crapping in the water bottle.
Good point kadbow. And you know he is so full of it he will need the wide mouth bottle. Ha.
This is liking watching a train wreck. Can't look away!
Where is TBM starting his elk hunt? Co? Wy? Mt?
"Where is TBM starting his elk hunt? Co? Wy? Mt? "
...he started in Alabama when he was 3 hunting turkeys.
seriously I think Montana??? got a copy TBM?
Montana and it's cold and rainy right now. They are calling for 33 degrees tonight and 26 degrees and snow tomorrow night.I hope he doesn't freak out when he sees the white ground.Did anyone think to lone him any snow shoes?
A lot of people tried to ask him where he was going and he wouldn't reply in the other thread he started for his trip. I don't think anyone offered snowshoes. But I don't think we figured out he was going to Montana till he let something slip right before he left. He refused to answer a lot of questions on that thread from a lot of bowsiters that were trying to be helpful. It remains to be seen how that's going to work out for him.
Tbm invented snowshoeing
Michael
I believe that someone shared some scouting information with him....I just didn't know where....
In one of the threads he posted a pic of Montana tags..so hopefully he made it! Wvarcher
I'm pretty sure it's Montana. If so, looks like he's in for some bad weather.
It's just as beautiful wet as it is dry. Wet will help keep his scent to a minimum....
TBM stated on another thread that he was going to borrow my pack frame. He passed right by my house. Have not seen him. Pack is still where I put it awaiting his arrival. Will put it back in designated storage area.
No one's heard from him in awhile. Time for the speculation to begin. Did he go too long without sleep and forget where he was going, and even now is driving aimlessly to...who knows where?
Hopefully he made it to MT today and roosted some elk tonight.
Hopelessly lost but making good time!! Hope he has a great hunt.
Buffalo1,I believe he bought a military type pack and frame, not too long before he left.Friday the sun should be out and each day getting progressively warmer. It is supposed to be 80 degrees within a week.Except for tomorrow,he should have decent weather.
A member evidently pointed him to an area where there were elk so I get why he isn't pin pointing the location on the internet.
"Hopefully he made it to MT today and roosted some elk tonight."
That's a riot.Good luck TBM.
I still don't know what to make of this guy. I just don't know if his posts are legitimate or a total hoax. Have any reputable Bowsiters met this character in person?
Yea there was a picture of a military pack in his truck. And when I said he wasn't replying, I mean not even which state, or even north or south, or planet earth. Please don't make me laugh - no one was trying to get any elk honey-holes from someone who's even been in the west. He never suggested he knew anything about that. These people were genuinely concerned for not only the safety of a western newby, but were trying to offer him good advice on western hunting also. Your suggestion has some merit but is very far-fetched IMO.
" Please don't make me laugh - no one was trying to get any elk honey-holes from someone who's even been in the west. He never suggested he knew anything about that."
I didn't say that.He was getting PM's from some people and he got a tip on an area, plus a suggestion for which week. That person may have asked him to not share the exact location?I would have,if it had been me.
Hadn't put boots on the ground yet. When I finally got here the snow was falling pretty hard so I just looked around. Getting some tips on where elk might be but can't pinpoint anything. Got a couple maps at the office and that's all I got. Phone not working as good as it did at home...don't show my location so compass and maps will have to do. Not even topos so ...

Looks like the right amount of snow to make the hunting good!
That small amount of snow will be blessing to you TBM. Use it to your advantage in figuring out where the elk are and where they are going. Good luck today!
How did the book "into The Wild" end? Been so long since I read that one. .......
So far, so good. One step at a time TBM, one step at a time.
Should be able to track them now
Best to hunt with your back to the blowing snow TBM. Warmth is most important.
TBM........ You need to update the "roaming" capability on your phone. I don't know which carrier you have, but verizon is *228, option #2.
Roaming Capability? Does that change depending upon where you are hunting? How do you find out.
LX......... All I know is it helps with connecting to towers in the area, new ones or existing. If you've never updated, I'd suggest that you do.
I would do it when I went out west last time every couple states we passed through and I do it every year we go to the beach. Around home........ once or twice per year.
Glad you were prepared for snowy conditions TBM! Good luck man.
GREAT cartoon. Guy is a legend. No topo maps - hmmmn. TBM mebbe you should wear one of those orange flags on a long fiberglas pole, so if the worst happens they can find you under the snow.
Roaming Capability? Does that change depending upon where you are hunting? How do you find out.
"Hadn't put boots on the ground yet. When I finally got here the snow was falling pretty hard so I just looked around"
Huh...no snow pack from wiper push in that pic......
So what's a guy to think?
1.Wasn't snowing
2.Didn't use wipers in the snow
3.Still in AL without topo maps having a giggle
4.Paranoid Audience
Genesis, looks to me like he got there and slept in the truck. Woke up and opened the door to take the pic before he went out and got lost. Evidenced by the small snow disturbance above the driver's side door. I'm not a detective but I did watch CSI once.
LXShooter, back in the old days, you had the option of restricting which towers your cell could receive signal from and avoid roaming charges. there may be some tower restrictions still in place. phones still have to be reset for some areas in order to access some towers.
I hope he knows to turn the WIFI and any unneeded apps off to save the battery power usage.
Didn't shut the door very hard if that is the case Brotsky as all the snow is still on the window and top of mirror. I think he was sleeping in the back of the truck when he said he had to move stuff around to sleep.
Its time for Pat to come out of the closet!
Its time for Pat to come out of the closet!
He's hunting now. My prediction is the next time he chimes in there will be one on the ground.
Well I guess it's game on. Wonder what the odds are at this point in the game? I'll give him 50/50. I still wonder if he's getting any help, and if so from who. ummm Odds go up with help.
Beav that made me laugh.
Hopefully TBM is not stuck in the ditch somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
How do tracking spiders fair in snow?
This thread is like a weird addiction now... I find myself opening it each morning and have replaced the comics with it.
Duke,
They do fine but it gets old waking up at 1 AM to lace up their little snow shoes.
I may have to skip my own elk hunt this weekend just to drink and keep tabs on this Clark Grizwald elk trip! Good luck out there!
Is Vegas putting odds on whether TBM survives or not?
Hope he doesn't eat yellow snow.
Saw several elk. They not talking. Quiet elk not fun.
That's cause they don't understand the accent
Forgot to say almost shot somebody and lost my bugle...bad day. The guy said he thought deliverance when he heard the arrow coming. Little did he know.
Be aggressive. They don't come to u as easy as u going to them.
What the hell were you shooting at that you almost shot someone?
Did he have a purdy mouth?
My sentiments exactly armed hiker. I've gone back and forth on the validity of TBM as either a troll or just a lost misguided soul. In this case I hope he's just trying to get an internet rise.
For God's sake there is no reason to unleash an arrow unless you know for certain what your target is and have a good clean, unobstructed, safe shot. The fact that this is in my home state really makes me want to step into the woods right now(Not like it's the first time somebody has done this though). I wonder how many decoy spreads TBM has carelessly slaughtered back home and if he counts the lifeless latex(At least that's what his honey calls it) towards his Turkey bow numbers. I guess hunting the west is just like turkey hunting in the deep south. All I can do is shake my head.
"Forgot to say almost shot somebody"
TBM...that's not even funny.
Well at least he didn't cut a switch and beat his kid.......
Nah..he was probably looking for a ride....deliverance style
In the elk....odds are rising.
More like a "Misguided Troll"
+ armed-hiker
Shooting at someone (another hunter ?)is no joke. Was he packing out a rack...? Or do you just shoot at anything that's alive in the mountains...?
The people I've seen don't look anything like elk (except maybe my mother-in-law).
Slept in this am...I needed the rest. Quit trying to pack everything and going lite now. Finally got out at 10 and heard a bugle. He probably bugles until noon. That's good. If I can get on him early I might do good. Spooked a nice bull on the way out. I don't think he was too bad spooked so he want go far. Heard one bugle across the mt. This evening.
As said, don't be afraid to be aggressive...
Took my first bath in a week. Montana streams are cold this time of year.
WWTD. What would a turkey do?
What's the weather suppose to do?
What's the weather suppose to do?
What part of MT are you in?
What's the weather suppose to do?
MT is a big state... need to know what part you are in to give you a forecast.
It looks sunny through Wednesday for most of MT... temps should be increasing slightly over the next several days.
Let's hear some updates, TBM!
How did you almost shoot someone TBM. You gotta clarify that one! Did you find your bugle yet?
I thought this hunt was going to be easy!Turkey tactics and Alabama expertise is all we heard for months.Id be more concerned with someone getting hurt at this point TBM or some other unlucky hunter passing by.
I'm betting that TBM didn't actually almost shoot someone....I'm betting that he was using the expression loosely....for example, he got close to a bull, and another hunter cut him off...."I could've shot the guy...."....time will tell.....
TBM heard a bugle and didn't get it done! You can sleep in when your in the nursing home TBM its now or never.
alright - who told TBM it's ok to sleep during an elk hunt? This isn't turkey hunting TBM! Get out there and stay there! You have to WORK for elk lol.
Come on guys...you're getting sucked in again. If he can post on here, he can get his own weather. Geez. This guy has been playing this site for a couple years. It's funny sometimes, but getting old.
LOTS of haters but that doesn't keep them from posting non stop... I love it!
Hope you catch a break Steve.
Elk hunting can flat wear you out and sometimes the best thing you can do is sleep in one morning and get your self recharged. If you can get into some good rutting action closing the deal can be pretty easy. Good luck.
He's only been hunting 2 days. Who has a sleep in after 2 days (with no success?). After a week I could understand it sure.
The guy I almost shot it went down like this. I was walking down of the mountain and thought it would be a good idea to shoot a judo points at something it see if I could judge yardage in the steep terrain. I picked out a dark object about one inch tall and 4 inches long that was in the road down below. I was the only one using the road and it was gated off. I didn't think it was anyone around and fired away at 53 yards shooting for 51. This was guessing the distance. I centered it would have been a heart shot chipmunk. Only got to celebrate for a second before "woa dude" hollored out. He was hiding about 10 feet away because he was looking at a cow down the road. I apologize, but how was I to know.
Today early I got a stalk at a bull but he vanished. I don't know wheather he saw, hear, or smelled. Wind was mostly in my favor but not steady. Busted a couple more bulls. I want to get out there but they are not bugling and hard not spooking them when you don't know they are there. I think I need to let those rest and maybe they will turn on in a few more days. Met a guy who said the 19 was good last year. Found a dead bull in a drainage. Walked about 10 miles today. Going to glass and listen in the am and look for a new area. One area I looked at has tons of 2 week one sign bit nothing fresh. It's been a wide range of emotions so far...starting to like it better and starting to get my mountain legs under me. That feels good. I am still the fattest elk Hunter I ahs seen so far. These guys are bone wirey.
Home made bugle tube made out of water bottle with the bottom cut off and paper towel core and duck taped together. Using the Berry extra diaphragm like a Turkey call. Had to put duck tape one it. I will fer me another if those Berry bugles.
A wiffle ball bat with the ends cut will work too TBM. If ya can find a walmart or larger drug or dime store ya might find one
Second the wiffle ball bat with the end cut out. It's been my go to set up for the past three years. Once you try it you will snicker at all the suckers lining up for $49 plastic tubes. Next level for sure Norseman. HDYLNMK How do you like Norseman know?
Sounds like you are getting close. Keep with it and you will get it done! Good Luck
Keep after them TBM, you are learning everyday. Put that knowledge to good use!
Glad to hear your getting into elk TBM. Keep at it and keep the faith brother. You can do it. I've set aside some bail money for you just in case you connect with the next human to cross your path. ;)
This is going as expected. Can't wait for the HDYLMK picture soon!
Nothing bugling still. Setup on a hill so high I could hear dogs barking in Amarillo...nothing. got to start soon. Made 2 dry scouting runs this am. I know where a few elk are but looks like I am just going to have to deer hunt them.
TBM,
Hesitant as I am to further your Bow site BS spiel, I told you prior to your trip you should focus on hunting and not on calling.
BTW, Was that call made from your portable restroom shown above? That is really recycling at the next level.
Throw out anything you've learned from Turkey hunting. Hunt like your hungry. Get your "kill" mode ON!!!
Don't make the mistake of thinking quiet elk = elk that won't come to calls. Right before they get vocal is a good week to call bulls in. Hunting them like deer can work. Hunting them like turkeys can work. Hunting them like elk generally works the best.
Stay with it, and hunt hard and smart. ( Elk arnt all that smart if en they was they wood know how many legs a hoss got.)
"Hunting them like deer can work. Hunting them like turkeys can work. Hunting them like elk generally works the best." - Don Ward
Quote Of The Day
Silent elk do respond to calls. I called in 2 bulls this weekend with a bugle. Mostly chuckles. No cow sounds. 1st bull chuckled Back twice before he came in to 40 yards. No shot. 2nd bull came in totally silent to about 50 yards couldn't find what he was looking for and left. Called him back in again with some chuckles this time to about 40 yards, but straight on. Too far for a frontal, had to let him go.
My advice is to call, but don't overcall when the elk are quiet.I'm hunting sw Montana.
Keep after 'em Steve. You know you got it in you !
I almost missed this thread... had no clue TBM posted it, the title was spelled correctly. :)
TBM, any bulls in shooting range yet? Waiting to hear from you, and hope all is well.
.....to call out search and rescue!
"Search and rescue" Nah.... Im sure by now he's tamed the biggest bull on the mountain and is most likely riding on his back like a majestic stallion!!
"Recycling at the next level!" LMAO!!
>>>>-------->
If they are not bugling you are not close to em! Try getting to your hunting grounds at 4am bugle and see if you get a response! My best hunt this season was last weekend the action started at 3:59am and lasted to 10 minutes before legal shooting time! I guarantee while you are sleeping they are doing their thing!
Every time I read the title all I can think about is the announcer from the UFC screaming ITS TIME
Stayed in the hills last 2 nites just sleeping in my cloths and getting pretty cold on the ground. Worked a bull but he was tending cows. He is the only talkative elk I found.
U r calling from far. He bugles, you go. U try to locate as much as possible without calling. Get inside 100-150yds then try calling. Your job is to get within 100yds. The elks job is to close the last 50.
Time is passing Steve, get it done man ! Best of luck !
When does the hunt end? I bet the farm that he wouldn't kill and I'm getting anxious to cash in. I took the odds but 5% of the farm is still a good check.
Steve, got a quick question for you. Be honest now. Is elk hunting tougher the you thought?. Regardless, I still think you can get it done.
Thought he was supposed to be done with 2 tags now in 2 different states? Glad he started in MT, cause he would have really crapped to see how hard Colorado OTC tags are to fill...
Good luck Steve I'm pulling for ya man and looking forward to the hdylmk! Now go get em
Would be nice to see some pictures from the field.
Why are we so captivated by car crashes?
You have to give the guy credit when it's due. He's out there trying to get it done on his own, never hunting elk before, trying to make it happen solo. Not many first timers would consider that. Even if he doesn't get it done, he's got my respect.
bb I don't think anyone is saying he shouldn't be given credit for trying. The pure arrogance is what people get turned off by. He takes narcissism to the next level. This ain't turkey hunting. Period!
He's learned ALOT in the last few days.
I put on a clinic on how to mess up this am...I'm looking but ain't always seeing. Got close on a dink but he just decided to quit feening and pull out...couldn't catch him after than. He might not have Bern legal. Called to a bugling bull and when I mooved down wind to catch him another bull snuck in from the side and caught me moving. He was around 320ish. Very nice bull. Bigger than the herd bull I've been chasing. They turned it on a little more this am. One bugles out 12 times in an hour. Heard one or two more. Going back. 3 more days.
I'm glad your getting into some elk, but I'm still pulling for the bulls. :)
Now he's having fun!!! Get 'em !
Oh and thanks for posting the updates. I know how driven you probably are with a ton on your mind and probable elk fever to the extreme. With so much build up and following you obviously recognized the importance of sending updates. There is a thread about Andy Ross thinking he is a legend but if you get a bull on your first trip solo- it will solidify your legacy your legacy forever!
The Good Lord built the Earth in six days Steve, surely you can close the deal in three. Ramp up, I'm pullin' for ya...........
Best thread EVER on ANY forum.
RED NECKS RULE!!!
Turkey is getting tired?!?!?!?!?
Ya larger animal might be a little bit smarter than a Turkey.
Lol, this is the time when you gota be focusing more. You can not mess up when you are close.
LOL their legs are longer than a Turkeys!!!
Your feet are tough, but your lunges and ass aren't !!!!
Start planning for next year, cause i think you have the bug. Might be a year long workout thread!!
To End, lol finding and killing is the easy part!!! It seems you might be struggling with that?!?!?! Don't want to even get into the pack out.
I think luck and skill could get you an elk, that would kick your ass. Calf, cow.
Bull Destroy you from top to bottom!!!!!!
With all the rambling, i think you could kill an elk. However, you might be contemplating now DO YOU WANT TOO?
Good luck!!!!
TBM, it's not over until it's over. All you can do is give it 100%. Good luck.
Steve, you might need to sleep in tomorrow morning! It's most important to be sharp. You'll know the action is getting good when you've heard so many bugles you begin to question whether some of them are elk or you imagination.
why did I bother to read this....the only bull this idiot is chasing are his repeated posts on this thread.
The responses on this thread are at a snails pace now for what you might expect. I don't even have to read this one anymore. I guess once there is finally a spike in responses then either he went home or tagged out.
Have you left that 50 acre honey hole yet?
I put on a clinic on how to mess up this am...I'm looking but ain't always seeing. Got close on a dink but he just decided to quit feening and pull out...couldn't catch him after than. He might not have Bern legal. Called to a bugling bull and when I mooved down wind to catch him another bull snuck in from the side and caught me moving. He was around 320ish. Very nice bull. Bigger than the herd bull I've been chasing. They turned it on a little more this am. One bugles out 12 times in an hour. Heard one or two more. Going back. 3 more days.
Don't like this thread, don't read it, don't comment. It is what it is. One guy trying to tag a bull elk on his first elk hunt. I can't believe anyone would wish a fellow bowhunter bad luck. Like TBM or not he's doing the best he can with a lot less then most of us. Just my humble opinion, and it is what it is. Good Luck TBM. On second though, post away, we all have our opinion, and this is still America. Regards, Carl
The above was yesterday. Today I put in a clinic of poor shooting. I just came apart. Everything I ever learned went in the garbage I I just started flinging arrows. One or two hit the bull and he looked hurt pretty bad but kept on going . Not much blood but a fair amount. Letting him lay for the nite. I hate too but he might be alive in the am.
Flinging arrows at elk and people!I told you before you left,a bit of humble pie was in the serveing.Hope the bull is down and stays down.
Good luck in the am. Hunt hard to the end. 3 years ago I arrowed a bull at 4:45 pm on the last day of the season.
Wise choice to back out. Get a good night sleep...if ya can. No sense in searching until full light. Hope you recover him.
Good luck in the AM! Hope ya gotrdone.
Bull and buck fever happen fo me too. Can't say why, I just lose my darn mind. I have been known to forget to look through the peep a few times. Please tell me you were smart and did not push the wounded bull? Hope you find him. Sounds like you had a great time anyway. Its tough sometimes.
It happens. Maybe one was lethal. As I said yest or day before TBM is learning a new game. Good luck & a prayer for recovery!
And don't forget the spiders....
That sucker hipmotized with his antlers. He dropped down in a dip and all I could see was horns bobbing up and down and I couldn't take my eyes off of them. My first arrow went between his horns. I burgled him up..that was awesome.
Steve don't forget to post up some pics of the recovery and scenery.Good luck tomorrow I'm pulling for you man!
How do you burgle em up? With a burgle?
Good luck on the recovery
Good luck on the recovery!
Wishing u a great recovery. Any other hunters around u to help ?
Good luck with the recovery...we'll be calling you the Turkey Elkmaster.
"Nothing more I would enjoy than to see you get an elk and shut-up these naysayers that never tried anything like you are doing. Xman and LINK especially."
Archery95 I can't speak for Xman but I have hunted elk and will continue to do so for as long as im able. You just don't know I've hunted elk because like some people I don't tell the world how great I am. I have nothing against Steve and wish him a good hunt. I however would like to see him delt a serving of humble pie. It looks like he may be getting that. I wish TBM the best in recovering his bull, nothing worse than wounding an animal.
I hunt by myself but camp with my brother and have never been guided on a hunt of any kind. Sorry if that makes me less of a man than yourself or TBM. I guess whatever credit there is in making the drive by himself I will give to him. Like I have said I just want to see him step off of his self aggrandizing high horse. I look forward to seeing his bull.
C'mon TBM it's 8:11am here in Co. Lets see that bull!!
Just so everyone knows...
XMan and x-man are not the same person.
Looking forward to an update....!!! Good luck with the tracking job.....get some "leggings" for your tracking spiders if they aren't used to cold Montana air, and turn them loose. Hope that you don't lose any meat, if you do recover him.
We still havent seen 1 picture of the guy in elk country.... Hmmmm!
We have only gotten vauge details regarding the hunt, and now the "encounter".... Hmmmm!
HockeyDad there is a lot one can question about TBM but I do believe he is elk hunting in Montana. He has showed a picture of his license and he would of had to work to fabricate the snow on his truck. I do agree some scenery pictures would be nice though.
Let me be clear in my post, I am not wishing the guy bad luck or harm, I just don't believe he is hunting elk. He could have posted his camp or the mountain or a wallow he was hunting over but he didn't, why? Post a pic TBM of the moutain, that bloodtrail you are following or your camp setup and I will become a believer.
First you guys get on TBM because he took a morning off to get recharged and wasn't out hunting. Now you're getting on him because he won't stop and upload pics. Hell, when I'm elk hunting I don't even call home until I'm back in civilization and have the time. Sounds like a lot of guys here have never been in elk country on a solo D.I.Y. archery hunt. My hat is off to TBM , he got up off the couch and drove half way across the country to a place he's never seen, by himself, to chase his dream.... Most guys would have hired an outfitter and flown out for a 5 day hunt with 3 or 4 buddys. BEST of luck !!
I am convinced the only way I will see TBM next to a dead elk is through the miracle of Photoshop.
DC's Link
TBM, will have an incredible experience out west if nothing else.
My wife and I just recently went to the Grand Teton on our 30 year anniversary vacation and I can honestly say that elk country is beautiful and the scenery never ends. Check out some of the critters we got to see in the link above. This was a great way to show my wife some animals up close and personal without actually hunting.
When I was in the Military I was station in New Mexico for a while and I got to chase Elk with only a camera in hand. I was able to get very close to some huge bulls but I never drew a tag to hunt them. It can be a challenge to get in on a big bull within the 20 yard mark. I did get to tag out on a nice Mule deer. It was great.
Not too many guys would do what he did. If he kills an elk, he will be in a VERY small club of guys who drive so far to hunt new country, new game etc and succeed.
Sure he is a little odd but some of that has got to be poking fun at u serious guys.
I hope he makes it home safe and has the hunt of his life. I don't imagine he will equate turkeys to elk quite as vociferously. If he does get a bull, I'm gonna be trying real hard not to read his threads!
I can't help but laugh when I read some of these comments. Some people are being critical of some people being critical...of a guy who claimed he killed 200+ (or w/e) turkeys with a bow in Alabama, right?
Being critical? I dont know. I'm just calling out the arrogant A$$ who thought he knew better than a lot of experienced elk hunters and "Was going to show them all how to hunt elk".
I am not wishing him any bad luck or harm, and even if he gets one I will not respect him any more.
Boy some of you guys are harsh. TBM is the best thing for hunting since the butt out tool. He is a genius and the bow hunting messiah. ;). Everyone should just bow at his alter because he is THE BEST. You guys should really lighten up. Lol
Some of you guys are just plain rude. To openly wish for a fellow hunter to fail, etc... is just wrong.
I can't believe a few of you...
Wow...
I'll second that Nick....Times are changing.
One thing about TBM, he has had hundreds of chances to trash talk to a lot of guys on here who dis. him but I don't think I have ever read anything he said bad about anyone.
I've been getting my rear end absolutely kicked around this elk season. Heat, wind, storms...you name it. I wouldn't wish this much time & effort and nothing to show for it on anyone.
Good luck on the recovery.
All you can do is your very best and hope it works out. I'm sure TBM is giving it 100%.
After being here about 4 years, it has been made apparent that some of the "diehard" elk hunters fancy themselves as in some kind of fraternity that you have to earn a place in before you can comment on anything elk. Blinded by their own knowledge and ignorance. Yet it allows them to poke fun and develop feelings that no hunter should have for another.
Yeah, TBM plays a part to play your childish emotions. He plays dumb at times to get your goat. He does it for fun. And this is the way you respond? By wishing him to fail? If you don't believe he is hunting, whats the big deal? If you think he is too dumb to kill an elk on his first trip, I guess that means I was too. But don't tel the elk I killed on a DIY hunt, in an over the counter unit in CO, while hunting them like turkeys, my first trip after driving 34 hours to do so.
Just keep your negative comments to yourself. No need to wish a man a hard time to earn your blessing. Just leave it alone. Ever think why you haven't heard from him is because he has been hunting? Or maybe even packing. Boy, that'd get your goat wouldn't it? A flat lander, from 'BAMA rolling out and killing what you suggest is almost immortal, on his first elk hunt. Get'em Steve. Good luck and God Bless
+1 for Nick. Some sad duds (a dud is worse than a dude) are frequenting Bowsite now. Is this the new Archery Talk?
I think it would be great if he just showed up on the Meat Pole thread, with a big bull and a bigger grin and just left it at that. I hope he found the bull.
Didn't find him. Not much blood at all. Tough tracking up there. Dried blood matches most everything. Tracked him by tracks alone with no blood for a long ways. A smear would confirm it was him. One of my best most challenge ing track jobs. Going to walk another drainage tomorrow and look by the water. Bulged up another bull but he hung up at 100 yards. Could see everything around me. I didn't want to go the route if decoy hats and cheapen my first bull but those would help. I flagged yesterday's bull in with a horn...it worked . He was totally convinced. So giants up here. My bull was about 280 and his track was about 4 inches wide. I've seen some 6 wide. They would cover a sawcer up with room to spare.
"Steve, got a quick question for you. Be honest now. Is elk hunting tougher the you thought?. Regardless, I still think you can get it done."
Exactly like Turkey hunting except you can draw on an elk but not a Turkey...Alabama Turkey that is. This is about like Missouri hill country turkeys. One difference I can see is you can happen up on elk and kill a cheap one from time to time. It's hard to kill turkeys easterns cheap. Mountains ain't bad after 4 days climbing the hills.
Fell in the creek today...bad...no good. While tracking this am I set off my bear spray. Coated my stomach and arm. Burnt like crap and still burns. Took a wipe off bath to ease the pain. Wiping off pepper spray before personal parts it the wrong order. The creek was a relief.
The reason the elk guru's can't fathom turkey hunting tactics are very similar is because they don't turkey hunt, or do so in woodlots. Never occurred to them that not everyone does that. I've walked just as far and hurt just as bad in Alabama national forests as I ever have elk hunting in the Rockies and packing out meat.
No difference in the two. You find them, get close, kill them. There is a range they will commit. You get in that, your golden for both. Only difference is, elk are too dumb to pick you out unless you move.
Get'em Steve.
It's harder on an Alabama boy to keep his composure on an elk. This stuff is exciting and addicting. I hope to get to pack one out. Anything goes after today.
Wait so I'm confused???
You shot/ flung arrows a a bull and a few hit?
You didn't find him and your still hunting???
@ WV Mountaineer - I commented to TBM in his other thread that some turkey hunting tactics will work on elk - but remember the elk will sometimes circle downwind when they come in - that's the difference.
Keep at it, they are just a little tougher than turkeys.... Did you rage him?
LINK says, "TBM is the best thing for hunting since the butt out tool."
... I agree.
Some of you crack me up. You remind me of that college buddy who has never had a girlfriend, yet is good looking, has his crap together, yet just cant get it done. its the same thing here. You guys talk about TBM doing something that most will never do- really?
Id say most of the people on this site aren't the backyard bow hunters, never leaving their own patch of woods, let alone their state. Most of the people ive spoken with here are well travelled hunters, and elk aren't anything special to kill.
my very first elk hunt was in 2000 with an old college professor of mine, actually he was the dean of my department. We took a week off college and 3 days later I killed my first elk in co on an otc unit. I had more opportunities than you would believe and actually had a mishap with my release at full draw on a different elk the day before I killed my 5x5.
I was hooked on the mountain and elk hunting and from 2000 to 2009 I went on 11 different archery elk hunts and killed 13 elk. Yes in some areas you can buy an either sex and a cow/calf tag. All of these were diy on public land, otc units.
Killing an elk is much easier than killing a deer to me. You can get away with a lot on an elk that you never could with a deer. have you ever heard of someone arrowing a deer, then calling it back in and shooting it a second time?
Now, back to tbm. im not sure what to make of him but I don't care either. I think you can believe about 10% of what he types and who knows if he even hunts- but again I couldn't care less. If he is in fact elk hunting I wish him the best, but at some point you can keep wounding game and keep hunting. eventually you need to develop some ethics.
michael
Win, lose, or draw TBM will remember this hunt for a long time. When I think the bowhunters who will never get to have the elk hunting experience, TBM is already a winner.
How far were you flinging arrows TBM? Pretty sad. But I still doubt that he even got a shot.
I think a bunch of you are full of it.Ive never hunted elk before so TBM has more experience than I have and probably has as much than some of those who are bashing him.I suppose its easy to sit on your couch and talk crap to him and yet he just brushes it off and keeps going and that says a lot about his character IMO.Steve you have my respect and I wish you the best of luck and a safe trip home. This site used to wish luck to everyone and be supporting and helpful. I can't believe the way some of you all act if you can't support a fellow bowhunter then stay off the thread.
Haters gonna hate. Hope you kill a good one.
It's like my Grandma used to say, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
I guess TBM and I are the only two bowhunters that ever had buck fever and folded. Only difference is I always have clean misses, or one shot quick kills. (Wink, know what I mean?)
Flinging arrows between a bulls antlers is more than bull fever. For the sake of lineman21 grandmother I won't say what it is.
TBM, just curious, are you hunting in a general area or a permit area?
Wow lot's of pissed off people on this thread.
Kick a guy in the nuts for making a bad shot and losing an animal, then do it yourself....
Some of you Nancys need to go pop a midol and change your pad.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/embellish
I found out one part that is a whole lot tougher than Turkey hunting.
Man, I hope you're standing over a piled up bull.
I'm thinking he just finished packing it back to the truck.
I hope he got an elk and posts some photos. I'd get a kick out of knowing those who authored negative posts on this thread had to read about a successful elk hunt by TBM.
Got a 4x5 about 10 this am. Bugled him in. Other than a spike he is about the smallest one I saw, but he didn't ground schrink a bit. Unbelievable how big they are. I got him parted out and got two loads out before dark. Left one back strap and the two shoulders up there. Probable 3 loads tomorrow. Left my bow and backpack up there too. Most important was getting the hind quarters on ice. It was hot and I was on the west slope and the sun was blasting me as I worked in him. Beat. Time to eat and hydrate.
Congrats! Looking forward to the pic.
Yeah man!...Turkey elkmaster got it done!
This thread has gotten so big it took longer than a good dump to load the page!
Man........ You gotta post a picture!!!!!
HDYLHK how do you like him know? Way to go Steve!
Congratulations TBM! Hopefully nothing got that backstrap...
Can't wait for pics and the whole story! congrats! You've done graduated to Gatorade bottles for the return trip home!
Good job turkeybowrunnerup ;-) can't wait to see a pic!
Congrats TBM. Gotta admit that you set out to do something and you got it done. Looking forward to some pics and a full story. Now all you need to do is sell some firewood and head home.
Big congrats to you Steve! I knew you had it in you !
If I had a good recipe for crow, I would share it !
NICE JOB STEVE! Congrats! I knew you'd get it done.
Haha! I love it. Congrats buddy. Knew ya had it in you.
Thumbs up! Way to get it done!
Way to go Steve, I knew you could do it. Congratulations on your bull, you earned it.
Way to go Steve, I knew you could do it. Congratulations on your bull, you earned it.
Congrats, way to get it done.
Thats great TBM. Congrats brother! So... are you hooked? Can't wait to see pics!
I'm impressed.I'm impressed.
Congrats, looking forward to seeing the pics. I'm losing some much time checking this thread everyday I'm off to do some work . Well done
Nice. Congratulations, TBM. Way to go.
Nice job Steve, that's really great!
"This thread has gotten so big it took longer than a good dump to load the page!"
it might actually be time to upgrade computers...
Nice job tbm
congratulations - well earned... You talked the talk - then walked the walk! I bet that elk gonna feed your family just fine- to the tune of 6 Alabama deer!
Great job Steve!!!!! HDYLMK!!!!!
Congratulations! One question though:
If you're packing out meat, how do you leave your backpack on the mountain....?
I like tbm but he's Not special just like everyone else If we dont get pics It never happened so Lets see um!
I might believe it if I saw a pic.
So, I guess the question is how did we all do on the TBM odds thread?
Congratulations, but you had the ability to take pictures of your piss bottles but did not take a picture of your first elk?
Awesome! You should be proud of that one!!!!!
Without pics this didn't happen....Mike
Congratulations TBM! You got R' done!
>>>>-------->
How do you like him know?
How do I like him now?
I doubt that many people's like for him has changed much at all.
Love the Banjo Minnow comment... Ok, so "IT'S TIME" for a photo. Enough of this "Tom" Foolery!
Anxiously awaiting pic's.
Thank the Lord...tloins right where I left em.
The opening wit scattered pines is where I made my first stalk on a bull. I still can't figure out what happened on that one. Glad it failed because I wouldn't have experienced the fullest hunt possible.
No flipping that meat into a game pouch.
I am not the first, but congratulations. I was skeptical to say the least. That elk will taste better than tag soup or humble pie. How many turkeys does it take to equal one elk????
You worked your @ss off. But nothing worth doing is ever easy.
Quit posting, get that meat cooled and savor your accomplishment. Roast some tenderloin and take it all in. Your hunt, the country and have a safe drive home.
Awesome! Elkbowmaster! Congrats man that's a great accomplishment and I'm sure you're hooked!
TBM. Wow! Great job. A nice bull for your first, solo-hunt!!!
Congrats. Way to stick with it.
(If this is not real...well...I liked Milli Vanilli back in the day so I am OK with a little trickery)
Amazing job TBM, it looks as though a ton of people here will now be eating humble pie as you are feasting on elk back straps! You had an amazing hunt with a great outcome, you certainly deserved it.
On a side note, it really is upsetting to see how many people were rooting against a fellow bow hunter. Sad really.
Awesome! Elkbowmaster! Congrats man that's a great accomplishment and I'm sure you're hooked!
when you get settled in and squared away, there will be plenty of time for more details about the hunt, the shot, the kill, etc. I am sure I will have disagreement with you over some nonsense again someday, but on this - you had my full backing and am very happy for you. It's easy to "think" about doing this as I have done from time to time, but to actually do it and the way you did- well that takes a lot of will and determination and planning. Congrats once again, and that sure looks like a fine specimen you got there!
Love it! Absolutely, positively LOVE IT!!! For more than one reason!
Congrats, TBM!
Binded down loaded up and fixing to be trucking
Z rig helped keep tension on the hide while I cut. Only took a second to retighten
Well you hung in there and got it done. Congrats on your very first elk hunt. TBM 1, Elk 0 Dam man, you got true grit. Take care and have a safe trip home.
Great job, nice bull!
Crow soup is the special of the day for this thread.......
Congrats! Heading out alone and connecting on an elk hunt in new country is always an accomplishment.
I've stayed completely out of this, but I thought he would be successful. That said it was a nicer bull than I thought.
Well done sir. Solo pack job looks like a bear of a time. GL and well done.
Seems like you worked hard, had some good and bad luck, some good and bad decisions. In the end though you are walking away with a filled tag and a ton of experience and memories
Hats off to you. I did not think it possible, but hey I killed my first bull on the first day of my hunt, so I guess it can happen... :) An honest Congrats TBM!
Big congrats TBM aka EBM !! I think you shut a lot of these .....what did someone call them, Little Debbie's or Nancy's up. Hell yea, D.I.Y. no camper just your truck and gear and yourself....That is 100% better hunt than ANY guided hunt with you being led by all the scouts and spotters to a bull that has been sat on for a month. Now that's HUNTING !! again, Congrats you made us D.I.Y. public land bow hunters PROUD.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
To quote Ron White "That'll shut her up"!!!!!
Congrats TBM you da man! Mike
Yes, congrats is in order!
Well done Steve, congrats.
WTG Steve!!!!!! You done well.
I get on this site everyday and hardly ever post anything but I can't stop smiling about this one.......
TBM went fishing on Bowsite and got an elk.
Congrats TBM!
Oh I am loving this as well. Way to make it count, and I can't wait to see what some of the whiners come up with now.
I do want to ask about the the bull you shot earlier though. Any closure as to what happened on that one, or did I miss something?
Congratulations Steve, as that is a pretty nice bull to boot!
"It's like he's using the Banjo Minnow on here and guys are still gobbling it it up. "
Open mouth, insert Banjo Minnow, close mouth!
Well done TBM. Big time congrats. Looks like there are folks here that owe you an apology.
Very nice. Love the loins in the tree. Would have been a same to loose them to the Magpies.
Congratulations to whomever shot that BULL, whatever their name is and wherever they shot it.
And you all thought this was gonna end differently.
Manilli Vanili, too funny.
Guys a hate it as much as you but I have to say it looks to me like TBM killed an elk. Who else would southern engineer a rig to hold the hide out of the way like that. He has done something most first timers haven't. Congrats TBM you did something I didn't think you could. You're still like nails on a chalk board to me so don't think this makes me like you. :)
Space blanket makes a pretty good cutting board
Also flagging. Refinding an elk can be tough without marking a trail. I used the blanket pieces tied every 2 to 300 yard and used a compass to navigate to each piece. Way back in here
TBM,nice hole in the shoulder blade.
TBM.... GREAT job! Can you do us all a favor and send us a pic of you with those horns? A nice hero pic? There's gotta be someone around who will snap one for you....
Way to go!!!
Hell even a selfie with a partial view of the elk in the background would be great! Big congrats!
Congrats TBM, wish someone had a picture of your smile when you walked up to him for the first time. Have a safe trip home!
Congrats!!!! That is an awesome ending to one of my favorite series of threads on Bowsite.
No need for a hero shot. Anything short of you standing next to a dead elk, showing the GPS coordinates, holding a local paper dated the same as the date you shot it, with a signed affidavit from president Obama will convince some folks.
TBM, either on purpose or by accident, has proven to be an excellent forum angler. The worst thing he could do would be post up a pic of himself and his elk together. It would be like dumping the whole can of night crawlers in the lake. Makes no sense when there is plenty of fishing left to do.
Also flagging. Refinding an elk can be tough without marking a trail. I used the blanket pieces tied every 2 to 300 yard and used a compass to navigate to each piece. Way back in here
congrats. looking forward to reading the story and seeing the pics when you get back home and settled down. you have a lot of work and a long drive ahead of you.
TBM = The Bull Master! :)
>>>>-------->
Congrats TBM!!! What a away to get r done!!!
Them Southern boys can flat out hunt!
Congrats on a great bull!
Nice bull awesome accomplishment!
those Alabama turkey woods are gonna be full of spiteful elkmasters this spring
or maybe not
Outstanding accomplishment TBM, congrats!
Congrats on a great bull, perseverance rules! They are like 600-700# turkeys that can smell and respond to calls.
GIT-R-DONE by:
The "TURKEY-BULL-MASTER"
Way to Go!
Awesome. Just flipin' Awesome. Let's re-cap here. The king of "getting your goat" comes on bowsite and proceeds to get about 90% of its members riled up. He embellishes every chance he gets to add to it. He then gets the notion to go after an elk. At which time the elk fraternity laughs at and prods him for doing so, and wishes him ill will and bad luck in the process.
To sum it up, he gets his rear and gear ready, rolls out of 'Bama to the "promise land", smokes a holy bull, takes pictures of the process, and makes the frat boys look like sulking babies. Oh my, I love it. Just love it. It appears TBM is the real deal despite what he purposely portrays and others buy into.
Goodness, this made me smile. God Bless brother and enjoy.
God loves you Steve. He blessed you with elk meat. You got a long drive but it is awfully nice to go home heavy.
Excellent!!! Congrats....you earned it! I think a lot of people are dumbfounded now:)
congrats.
looks like you could use some practice on butchering though
I'd like to see a picture of the bull before it was skinned out.....
By any chance TBM, the bull pictured is it the one you flung arrows at...and just happen to find?
Ahh, the far away sound of wailing and gnashing of teeth from points across the country must sound like a distant mountain cataract, huh TBM?
It's nice to see some of the detractors step up with some authentic congrats.
You're one of a kind, TBM. Well done.
If that bull was shot in Bama it would score 420.
Let's see a pic with hunter and the bull
Congrats on a successful hunt TBM. Awesome job!
Nice pics too.
* What was your hunting rig set up and what BH did you use to bust through the bone? What was the distance and shot angle and what not. When you have time to come up for air give details man details. Cant wait to here it all and I am now sold on the TBM next level thinking.
BTW Not sure of the record here but I see this tread hitting at least 800 post for sure. Rightfully so toooo.
Good job Steve.
Congrats man! Glad to see you get r done.
Got him finished packed out today. 4 trips. Last one was a doosie. Full load of meat, head and horns, my big daypack, bow and arrows. Prolly 160 pounds. Had to break it down at the creek into 2 loads...both were heavy. Might have been the most physical thing I have ever done while hunting...possibly ever peroid. Tough walking without anything, much less a bulky top heavy load that kept shifting . I never fell but came close. In Wyoming now. Time for rest.
That's my boy. Steve, knew you'd do it. Hell yes....
Good job, congrats! I bet this won't be your last trip..
Josh
I think you did a pretty good job OP, and a real nice Elk...
This hunt was way more than I expected to read about. Great hunt. Great bull. Great story. My hat is off to you, TBM. Great job! And, thanks for taking us along.
Congratulations Steve!!! ... I never had any doubts you would have a good trip. Sounds like you gave it the ol Bammer Jammer.
Get some rest and then "BRING IT ON HOME"!
I told you guys TBM would be coming home heavy!!!!!!!
Congrats TBM. I'm glad your trip was a success!
Sweet! Really happy for you Steve! Can't wait to hear the story about your trip from start to finish...that is if you plan to do it. Memories you won't soon forget.
TBM You da Man! Congrats again!
TBM got it done in Montana while Dan is still chasing them in the elk promised land of Arizona, just saying, lol.
That photo is about as evasive as Obama's "Certificate of live birth"
Congrats TBM! Great story and drive safely home!
He did it? He really did it! Wow I'm impressed. Congrats on your bull TBM it looks like you earned him.
As I said on the "TBM odds thread", I'm no fan of TBM's bowsite persona (but also under no illusions that he's actually like that in real life, the man probably spends 90% of his time on Bowsite giggling at the responses he garners :) )
I'm unsurprised that he killed a bull. And I believe he did. Some people will never believe, but the man showed a picture of his MT tag with his name and full address on it :)
Now. . . let's see if I can get this thread to 1000 posts. . . . .
I BET, that if you look at TBM's elk detractors, that 85% of them have either traveled out of state to hunt elk, and eaten more tag soup than elk. . . or live in the mountains, and hunted elk, and have eaten more tag soup than elk . . . . :) :)
I might be wrong, but the guys that travel and get it done on elk, and the locals that get it done, haven't been on TBM's case. . . .
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
:)
Bake
Wagons East! This whole thread of posts has been better than ANY reality television and I suspect the Duck Commander may have competition shortly! -Pat, you should think about signing TBM to a contract, exclusivity agreement, etc.
I'm so fancy This is how I know I'm in the fast lane From TurkeyBowMaster to ElkIKnow
If any man that is following this thread EVER complains about his wife watching TV, I sincerely hope she POPS you dead in the mouth! Mike
Well, TBM, you got elk in your rear view mirror ! In more ways than one.
I am looking forward to hearing the details of what that heavy shaft combined with the Simmons did to that elk shoulder... I am also very happy to see no hams were damaged in the process!
TBM or anyone else if you come through Arkansas just an FYI, this is the rule from the hunting regs, I know they've given citations to hunters just passing through the state
Currently, 38 states and 6 Canadian provinces have adopted regulations affecting the transportation of hunter-harvested cervids. In October 2005, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission approved a carcass importation restriction to further increase Arkansas's protection against chronic wasting disease (CWD). A cervid is any member of the Cervidae family, including white-tailed deer, elk, moose, red deer, sika deer, fallow deer, mule deer and caribou. Carcass Importation Restrictions: It is unlawful for hunters to import, transport or possess in Arkansas any portion of a cervid Carcass other than the items listed below from outside the boundaries of Arkansas. Antlers and/or antlers attached to clean skull plates or cleaned skulls (where no meat or tissues are attached to skull) . Meat with bones removed . Cleaned teeth . Finished taxidermy products . Hides and tanned products
"I am looking forward to hearing the details of what that heavy shaft combined with the Simmons did to that elk shoulder... I am also very happy to see no hams were damaged in the process!"
Jack I haven't heard where his two shots on the wounded bull hit. Have you?
Congratulations, TBM! This is definitely "next level" stuff...for you, and for Bowsite! Your stock isn't just rising, my friend....it's done blown through the roof!
RedArcher - good point about the elk skull/meat. We wouldn't want TM to get ticketed and lose his hard earned trophy. Here in NYS, I once saw a snowmobile trailer with 3 or 4 bull caribou in whole carcasses. That was until DEC las enforcement got ahold of them. All were confiscated and they were ticketed for having unprocessed game animals and parts in the state....
I hunt annually in Ontario, but we boil out the deer skulls on site and have all the meat boned out, cut up, wrapped and frozen in coolers.
>>>>-------->
Oh, dear GOD. It has happened and TBM has infected my computer! This resulted in a DDP (Dreaded Double Post); TBM style for sure! :)
>>>>-------->
I'm dumbfounded and speechless.........I did remember taking a friend deer hunting in Eastern Montana when we were both teenagers. He too was from Alabama and the Milk river whitetails were no match for him either!
Congrats
Tennessee has similar, if not the same, CWD laws as Arkansas.
Good job TBM. You need to change your handle to WBM- Wapati Bow Master.
He done good, but lets not get carried away...those young bulls are almost as dumb as turkeys. :)
Congrats TBM, Stuck it out and got rewarded on many levels,... except maybe your sore joints!
A hunter who can consistently kill Eastern white tails and Eastern gobblers with a bow can kill any deer or turkey in the US. Elk are much easier to get close than a Southeastern whitetail deer.
Elk live on the wind. A Southeastern whitetail will smell where you walked yesterday if the ground is a little damp, wind or no wind.
Eastern (especially Southeastern) deer and turkeys are the smartest. Hogs too.
I had my doubts big time...but you pulled it off, Steve. A big congrats to you...I like you know!
some people take themselves waaaay too seriously. You need just a hint of a sense of humor, archery95
Congrats on your first bull elk! DIY and all by yourself, quite an accomplishment!
Congrats TBM!
That is called putting up.
I do have a question....how did the feet hold up? Did the sanding help.
From now on....you are EBM.
Steve...Did you get to celebrate with a little of this while in the mountains?
Are you wearin' lipstick? or did you take my advice and buy some Gatorade? Congrats you ol' coot.
So what you are saying Bake is that you might just smell a hint of jealousy...?
TBM,
Congratulations on a great trophy and hunt. Thanks for sharing. You sure made us southern boys proud.
Feet held up great. They enabled me to wear a 10 year old $34 dollar pair if Merrel hicking boots instead of the $500 dollar barcoli Giovannis like all the rich concrete walkers wear.
Hey TBM, all kidding aside...I'm glad you got it done...congrats
Lol! That is awesome TBM....I am cracking up.
Congratulations TBM. I am glad you pulled this one off.
TBM congrats, the threads I have read with you in them have been the best thing I have ever seen on this site. a lot of people on here wont be able to stand the thought that you might be the greatest elk hunter that ever lived.
Right on TBM!
I wish there was a video of your bear spray exploding on you, that sounds absolutely hilarious...
We definitely need a story with pics! Congrats! Wvarcher
Good job TBM !!You are helpping us newbe elk hunters ,I now want to go back to montana and try again to get it done .
I can't say I'm Surprised. Great job Steve!
Congratulation Steve. Way to get it done.
Wow TBM ! Congrats on a nice elk ! EBM now !
I haven't been on this site much recently, but I have to say, I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. TBM, congrats on doing something that not many people would be able to do. Great job, God has blessed you with a great elk and a great, safe adventure... That was just too cool. Peace, Jay
Great job you walked the talk,I did not get it done my first try and I was younger, congrats.
Maybe now I can get that Turkey interview that Bowsite has been needing. Turkey hunting the right way is great training for elk...hunting part and calling. I used a Turkey call with the snake tongue ripped out to call in both my elk and Turkey tactics and locating tactics I learned from turkey hunting plus how to find unpressured areas learned from turkey hunting. So yes, a Turkey hunting Hunter who has never been elk hunting could be the best elk hunter. It's possible.
I think a general interview is in order- not just turkey. Deer, elk, turkey, rabbit - just bowhunting done right. Start a thread to lobby for it and let the members be heard.
TBM - Did he circle downwind?
Like I said in another thread.....he needs his own BOWSITE ICON!
Bring it on TBM, bring it on.
Didn't circle. I pulled a varmit calling tactic and setup on the upwind side of an opening. He would have had to get out in the opening to smell me and I would have had him shot before he reached my scent stream.
Good job TBM! Well earned!
It's Time is a great title for this thread because it's time some of you haters not only congratulate the man on what could be considered almost impossible, if you listen to some of you elk gurus on how hard it is to score on an elk (your own words), but maybe even an apology is in order...I think you know who you are!!
Way to go Steve!!!
Some guys can take a little joking around, some can't. It is what it is. No big deal. It's still hard to find a better bunch of guys then we have here on Bowsite. Kind of like a big family reunion. There is always one or two that can get under your skin, but there still family and we treat them like so. Down the road we look back and say that that old reunion was fun. Hang in there guys, It's all good.
Ok now that there is some next level thinking: "Didn't circle. I pulled a varmit calling tactic and setup on the upwind side of an opening. He would have had to get out in the opening to smell me and I would have had him shot before he reached my scent stream."
Wow. Very very well done. Also spectacular entertainment value. I second the vote for an interview.
Congrats. Glad you enjoyed your time in the mountains and scored.
Great job Steve, it been a great ride following along. By all means give a play by play when you get a chance. Very interested in heard the story. Save driving.
One thing's for sure. I'd rather go hunting with TBM than Blacktail Bob. ;)
Congrats on your first elk!
LOL x-man
Plus I wanted to be post 500
Interview X-4 Not doing so good here Steve.
Congrats TBM. YOu have set the perception of elk hunting being difficult back eons.
TBM Congrats to y'all from a CT.yankee! It's great to see a huntin' bro git er done!!!!! I was a rootin' for ya!
Congratulations from NH! I'm glad you got'r done. Meat on the table and "horns" on the wall, good job!
TBM, I rarely post on here, but I do enjoy reading practically everyday. Congrats on your elk!! I really enjoyed keeping up with this thread. I was rooting for you. My hats off to you for just going all the way across the country on a DIY solo hunt. That is a large accomplishment by itself. Congrats again, mac
A TBM quote- "Maybe now I can get that Turkey interview that Bowsite has been needing"
Was this comment a Freudian slip?
Was this the ulterial motive for the elk hunt?
This whole situation is unique. It is the first time in the history of rap music that a song actually portrayed what the musician was GOING to do. No where in rap music has a song been written in pretense and proved out to be real.
TBM, or ElkIKnow, now has the validity he deserves. He employed cutting edge tactics to kill bulls that circle down wind. Proving the wind had no chance to stop him. TBM is the real deal. He is a record making, bull taking, killing machine. How do you dare doubt him again?
Only problem I see with this is that guys will stop riding him so hard now. Cause he walks his talk. The persona he presents just doesn't hold the same degree of Moronic behavior to the humor challenged bowsit'er. My what a great couple days to be off sick from work. I love it!
Definitely Congrats to TBM, very impressive story, this should be published as a book! A feller drives from Alabama to Montana by himself, hunts an unknown location by himself, calls in & kills a respectable bull by himself. packs it out by himself and drives back to 'Bama by himself. This could be a movie after the book is published!
Glad your home safe and sound. I'm sure you still got some work to, so take care of that and then get some rest.
"Congrats TBM. YOu have set the perception of elk hunting being difficult back eons." Well, I don't think it was easy for him. He had to work for it. It took him some time, I think a lot longer than he thought it would. I mean he mentioned a few times getting a bull there and going to another state and downing another animal before heading home. But he pulled it off. And I think he earned a lot of respect from a lot of people on this site when he pulled it off.
Interview x5, it'd be interesting to hear that's for sure! Congrats!!
Welcome back home to Alabama!!!
Congratulations again Steve... simply awesome!
Somehow I missed reading this thread until now. Maybe as someone mentioned above it was because the title had all words spelled correctly. :)
I have been known to give TBM crap a few times but this time I say CONGRATS to a job well done. One of the most important attributes for an elk hunter to have is perseverance! You stuck with it and overcome the odds.
Interview x's 6...I think we've only just cracked the surface of TBM's knowledge! This guy is a stone-cold killer!
Quality cuts wrapped and in the freezer. Poor sinew filled cuts with them. The in between cuts trimmed and chilling to get ready for the grinder. Big pieces of tallow discarded, silver skin with meat on it back in my he cooler and will beput in the crock pot for bbq. Silver skin dissolves and meat can be seperated after 24 hours in the pot...bbq sauce added combined with buns. Nothing goes to waste. Cut some steaks from shoulder...SHOULDER meat and grilled. It was fairly tender and tasted better than venison. Should finish tomorrow.
What's next?
Coues?
Sheep?
Africa?
You sure earned that meat - enjoy every bite. And thank u- you may have inspired me to get off my ass and do that moose hunt I been dreaming of.
Congrats TBM! You do bring a smile to my face.
Steve, that is awesom man! Plain and simple. Definitely made me smile. Well done sir!
You walked the walk after soooooooo much talk. Enjoy every bite and every apology you get.
(Please note I was one of the more optimistic on the odds thread. Guys who grow up sneaking up on cat squirrels, usually gain some pretty good skills.)
Got home late last nite and working a double shift this evening through tonite. Will process meat tomorrow. Might get around to telling the story of my hunt this weekend.
Congratulations BULLMASTER!!! I am plum tickled! You not only managed to pull off a huge upset (long trip SOLO elk hunt, public land and a DIY bull on your back) but also shut up a few of the high horse elitist peckerwoods that grace" these pages! Priceless!
"Got home late last nite and working a double shift this evening through tonite'"
Tell those hajis at 7-11 that you work with the story of the sheep snagged in the fence!
michael
mn_archer, Does your post above give us a hint that dan didn't kill a bull? The fact TBM got it done really seems to bother you. Are you going to be ok? You really seem to be taking this to a personal level.
I was hoping you would get one. Congratulations!!
Awesomeness!!!
Happy for you. HDYLMK Bamastyle!!
lol I couldn't care less, im glad he got an elk. im just messing with him
michael
archery 95 give the watch dog routine a rest .
did TBM dun catch the bug and become an elkoholic? Are you planning another trip next year, Steve? I'm sure there are plenty of folks here that would tune in for the continuing saga.
I suggest a hike in trip into the Thorofare in Wyoming.....you know, make it interesting.
TBM,
What was your bow set up and shot distance, angle ect ?
Hoyt CE 70 @29. FMJ 300 Dangerous Game tiped with Simmons Tiger Sharks 175 gr. Over 800 grains total. 835 I believe. A little heavier than I was shooting for but it paid off on the second bull.
I think some of the dicks should apologize by paying for the taxidermy bill. Good job TBM.
Congrats TBM.....has been superb entertainment for the last 3 weeks, waiting for the story.Good job man.
Just looked at another thread. Man your base camp don't look like it. No four wheeler, no $1.500 tent, no best stuff. Wow, but you did have a $35.oo pair of boots and a tarp, so I guess it's all even. By the way did you both get your elk?
Bou, I’m glad you brought this back to the front. I enjoyed reading it all again, especially the comments from the turds who just couldn’t be happy for a guy to be hunting something out of his particular box and being successful.
In the long run, he wore me out, but you can’t take success away from him. HDYLMK !
It's funny to see how many guys ate crow on this thread. It's also funny that he has probably killed more elk than a lot of the "regulars" on here.
Oh no, he pulled it off, for sure. Not totally DIY since he was pointed to the spot by a Bowsiter, but pretty close and he closed the deal. And he earned it. He and I used to spar on here regularly but had (have) a friendly relationship offline. This year he reached out to me in the summer and offered up his WY elk spot, complete with coordinates and satellite maps. I miss him on here.
He was an acquired taste but harmless and entertaining as hell
I can't remember witch Bowsite poster said " Sometimes your posts seem like they were written by a Rhodes Scholar and other times like written by the son of the banjo player from Deleverance" referring to TBM. I thought that was a funny and clever post but with some truth. I never thought of him as a bad guy.
Been elk hunting one time. Did not even come close, so my hat is off to him.
1st time I read this.... EPIC!
