Elk

Just curious what arrow/broadhead/fletching combo everyone has used for there successful hunts this year (or past years). Also-Pics, shot placement, penetration, yardage....... Details welcome!
Please do NOT turn this into a debate on fixed vs mechs. Just would like to see how different combos did in the field and what the results were.
FMJ 340, exodus BH's, 25 yard shot, 20 yard recovery
Carbon xpress maxima red 250's with slick trick 125gr magnum bh and 2in blazer vanes put on with the bohning helix fletch jig. I shot this cow at 25 yrds broadside. Made dead center contact with a rib but it busted it in half no prob, went all the way through to the other side but didn't quite make an exit hole. She only made it 20 yrds. I shoot a bear mauler at 68lb draw weight with a 26in draw length. Shot this same setup last year with a complete pass through at 20 yrds on a small bull.
Lungshot, how do those RED's fly in zero gravity?
Gold Tip .250, Magnus buzz cut 150, 100 grain insert. 569 grains with 3 blazers 19% FOC. PSE Vendetta, set at 70# 26" draw. Used the same Buzz cut on my Pronghorn this year 2 weeks before.
43 yd shot, went about 35 yds stopped walked another 10-15 and fell over. Shot placement on the elk 1/4 away or more, went through the top of the gut, liver, lung, cut above the heart and into the throat. Arrow was up to the fletching in the chest cavity. Same shot on my elk last year, Pronghorn this year its proving to be effective. However, i still would like a broadside shot. The broad head bent a little because it hit a rib in the front of the chest cavity ill just send it back and get a new one. I did not take a pic of the arrow.
FMJ 400 Easton 280 Vanes G5 Striker 100 grains 50 Yard shot on Cow, complete pass thru
60# 425gr GT a/ 125 gr thunderhead. Pass thru and watched him fall.
Good thread. Would like to see bow at what pound draw.
Slick Trick, cow went 20 yards.
Good idea bowhunt....
Any big game animal is good for me.
OK Marv, then you have to show your bull!
Sons bull. 27" Hoyt Carbon Spyder Turbo @ 55#, 460 grain easton 330 AC injexion (with extra insert up front for weight and increased FOC) loaded with Exodus 100 grain broadhead. Passthrough at 30 yards and short blood trail.
CarbinTech Whitetail 65/80's with 100gr Shuttle T and Blazer vanes...@ 62# Utah on 09/09...60 yard shot, slightly up hill, behind the shoulder with a slight upward angle exit, no pass through, took a rib going in...Heard him fall within seconds, maybe went 50 yards after...
100 grain G-5 montec - complete pass through on moose earlier this year and this elk on Sept. 14. Cabela's shafts and 3 inch fletching. Been using inexpensive shafts and G-5 for years with many kills. To me, it's more about the broadhead than the shaft. I cut and fletch myself. 24 yard shot, ran about 75 -100 yds. Lung, Liver. PSE Bowmadness set at 60 pounds.
2014 Hoyt Faktor Turbo 65 lbs 28" Gold Tip Velocity 300 with RamCat 100gr total 390gr Shot was 56yds through the shoulder blade exiting through the back of the off shoulder but not penetrating the hide. Bull went 300yds, very little blood. I suspect he only traveled that far trying to keep up with his cows.
27" 74# Hoyt Spyder 30 415 grain easton axis 100 grain rage hypodermic Shot was 9 yards straight on and arrow burried completely inside the bull. Ran 30 yards and died in 10 seconds.
My son used Carbon Express 350's with Blazers and a 100 grain G5 Montec. 16 yards behind the shoulder straight above the leg half way up, pass thru, bull fell 125 yards or so.
my life sucks.. slick Tricks, 100 gr, Easton FMJ 340, no shots fired...
this thread makes me extremely envious....
I'll break the ice with a little kill. It was big deal to me, anyway. 50 yard shot, 40 yard track.
Slicktrick 125 magnum on 29 inch gold tip 75/95s, 3 short Blazers with as much helical as would stick. 410 ish grains, I guess.
Shot out of a PSE Diablo set at 65 lbs. No idea about energy or fps, but they fly pretty quick, and most importantly broadhead or target tip, they always stick right where the pin is when the fling goes off.
Had a complete pass through on this little guy, and the arrow was laying on a shrubbery right behind where the deer had been standing. I don't think he even knew he'd been hit. He was standing next to a big four point (this was in a 2 point only hunt, &@$# it!) and when I shot they both hopped off pretty calmly. The four point came out from behind some trees and this guy didn't. I kinda felt bad, because the four point stopped and kept looking over his shoulder for his buddy to hurry up and catch up for a while.
There was immediate blood at the hit, and two distinct dribble trails through the rocks the entirety of the short blood trail. This setup is pretty awesome for deer. Sure wish I was smart enough to see what it would do to an elk.
Close up of the wound channel-
"Lungshot, how do those RED's fly in zero gravity?" Lmao!! sorry guys I posted that earlier on my way rushing out the door to a job and didn't bother looking at it. Should be fixed ;)
Good deal guys. I'd say slick tricks and blazers are on top right now. I'm surprised so many guys are shooting blazers with fixed heads.
Plain old Easton 2216's 29" long 3 5" feathers and Muzzy 100 grain 3 blade broad heads. 10 yd shot 70 yd tracking job. Complete pass through and sticking in the dirt 8".
Goldtip 5575, 29.5", 3 5" shield cut feathers w/crest wrap, 125 gr. Muzzy Phantom and 50 gr. brass insert. 54#@28" Bob Lee Signature Recurve. 15 yard broadside shot, goat turned away just before arrow hit making it a slightly 1/4 away shot. Arrow took out the onside lung and heart. 75 yard recovery.
Here is what I saw when I walked up.
Bogey, why is it odd to shoot fixed heads with blazers?
9/14 my biggest doe ever. 23 yard sliced the heart with one of my 3 blade VPA heads. 100gr vented. GT 5575 XT Hunter shaft 4 " helical feathers. Total weight with BH 365gr. Matthews z7 bow at 63# with full pass through and plenty of energy left to spare. Had to really strain to pull arrow out of dirt. Dropped in sight 30 yards.
I have just personally not had luck with blazers/fixed compared to my old 4" feathers? Specifically 125gr g-5 montec w/400 gold tip. I shoot a 10 yr old 34" archery research. That's one reason I started the thread, plus I like to see what puts em on the ground not just what shoots the accurately the farthest.
Sorry 400 beaman not gold tip
I shot this goat at 45 yards. It was my first ever big game hunt. I used a Hoyt Faktor 30 at 61lbs. The arrows were Easton Axis 400 using Muzzy trocar 100gr and VaneTec fletchings.
FMJ 400, 100 grain Muzzy Trocar, Bohning wraps and blazer vanes. Very slight quartering towards me shot. Arrow was buried all the way to the fletches, going through both lungs. He Went down in about 50 yards.
Mathews Z7 62# shooting a carbon express maxima red 350,3 blazer tipped with a vpa 3 blade vented broadhead. 32 yards quartering away. He ran about 80 yards and I heard him fall.
Mathews Helium 65# shooting carbon express Maxima Hunters 350 G5 Montec 125 gr 47 yards broadside ran 50 yards back flipped on to his antlers
My backup bow, Oregon Deschutes 60#, Victory Vap 350, four fletch blazers, 150 grain Slick Trick xbow heads for more FOC, total arrow weight 469 grains. 37 yard shot tight behind left shoulder. Not a complete passthrough, broadhead lodged near opposite leg. Arrow snapped in half on bulls departure. Bull ran 45-50 yards, stopped, then couldn't get going again. No bloodtrail, arrow entry was from upslope, but didn't need bloodtrail.
Dan

125 gr Viper Trick, 28.5" FMJ 340, F.O.B. instead of flethching. -- Frontal Shot on a cow elk this year ... Went right down the trachea, and exited the bottom round.
400 FMJ, 100 gr G-5 Montec, 2" Rayzr feathers (Gateway), Easton shrink wrap crest and Nocturnal nock. 43 yd shot with complete pass thru. Went 60ish yds and watched him lay down and die.
Cool pic John, do you have a pic of where the arrow went in?
My antelope killed at 23 yd. with an Easton Axis 400 tipped with a 100 gr. G5 Striker. Blazer vanes ( one white, two pink ) and a Nockturnal lighted nock ( also pink ).
Gold Tip Hunter, Shuttle T 100 gr, Blazer, Strother Wrath 65# 57 yard shot
G5 striker easton 340 fmj out of hoyt carbon element at 14 yards, pass Thur. When 30 yards.
Shot this 5pt at 58 yards. Bow is a Hoyt Maxxis 35 set at 60 lbs, draw length 29", arrows are maxima reds, 100g shuttle t's. Arrow entered just catching the edge of the back of the shoulder blade, and buried into the off side shoulder. Bull traveled 60 yards before expiring. Bull only went 10 yards or so, before his back end started trying to pass his front end. Second bull with the shuttle t's. Both traveled about the same distance with very good blood trails, short as well.
Bowtech RPM 360, FMJ 440 grain, Slick Trick Viper Trick, 24 yard shot, 40 yards and down
100 lb whitetail doe with goldtip velocity 300's 100 grain inserts, 100 grains screwed in the back of the inserts, and I used the Muzzy Trocar on this one with 3 blazers fletched helical. I found here in the middle of a thunderstorm, so no pics of the carnage unfortunately. Trocar did its job though. Average blood trail.
Hoyt Pro Edge Elite ( target bow ) 65# , 27.5" Gold Tip Pro Hunter with 3 AAE Max Hunters with a 100 grain Shuttle T up front. 65 yard shot , quartering away took out the diaphragm , liver and back of one lung.
