you have already been told that this is probably one of the most difficult hunts there is, and now you want to kill an elk as well?
just consider the logistics of this if you are alone and the odds are not even able to be calculated...
Confucius say man who hunt sheep with another tag in pocket really not hunt sheep...

These unlimited sheep units are somewhat of a sore subject with the MTFWP from what I can see anyway, what we don't need is some clown making a joke of them. Please keep your typical drama and over-the-top moronic ideas and attitude away from these hunts. Some of us are very grateful for this opportunity we don't need the bad publicity that you clearly love so much. While you may think you are Gods gift to the turkey world and you might just be a decent fella in real life, you bring nothing but trouble with you to almost any thread you participate in. Ive seen your videos, ive seen your threads- that's all I need to see.
Again, by all means get a sheep tag and go in there, its a great time, but don't drag the rest of us through your bs drama-filled diatribes. If you truly are interested in this hunt there isn't a sole alive who is going to give up all the hotspots where they have seen sheep in the past. You are going to have to do some research on your own on this one.
good luck

There is a ton of misinformation about these unlm units and I would say the statement that only a fool would hunt either unit without going for both is not very genuine.
That's unit 501 if you are talking Granite Pass. Only a fool would want to pack an elk out of that area. Heck the outfitters rarely get into some of those areas with horses and the draws where there are no trails rarely see any human traffic other than a few summertime hikers. When you get up that high in September there isn't a lot of elk sign anyway. Down low on the main trails into the area you will see some elk sign, such the main boulder river, slough creek, Stillwater, etc, but
Im guessing only a small handful of people on this site can came a single person who has been successful on one of these unlm sheep units in the past 10 years, and none of us can name anyone who has killed both a sheep and an elk on the same trip- that's laughable.
Canmore is a tough sheep hunt, this is more than tough- but anything is possible.
In the past 6-8 years I bet ive spoken with over 30 people who either had sheep hunted in the unlm units or had serious time in there hiking or goat hunting. I cant name a single one who ever thought it a good idea to elk hunt at the same time.
Ask any Canadian or Alaskan outfitter how it typically works out on combo hunts and they will tell you the same thing. It isn't a great idea and rarely works out. Sure there are some species or some areas where this is very doable. Some sheep hunts you see lots of caribou, etc. But this isn't a game-rich environment for either elk or sheep and the elk that are there and in accessible areas are chased by a few outfitters and many wolves.
And don't forget about the fact that neither of these licenses are cheap for a non resy. Just having a $750 sheep tag in your pocket "just in case" just isn't that plausible for most of us.
Your best bet would be get a license every year and wait till the deep snows push them out of the timber and into wind swept areas- and hope the quota doesn't fill first (which it typically doesn't but did this year)
And telling a turkey hunter from Alabama to take crampons and water is a death sentence. No offense to TBM but if he needs crampons and has never used them before he is already in over his head and risking too much.
ive actually never heard of either of those two places you mentioned near Granite but to the north and east are two places called Froze-to-death plateau and storm lakes- they got their names from the last turkey hunter who set out to conquer them..
On another note...how much faith can you put in the advice given to everyone... if the same avvice is given to all wouldn't it be a crowd of folks in one spot. Would just busting your butt and finding your own spot yield less of a crowd? Then again...a crowd if people and sheep are better than no sheep.

So easy an Alabaman can do it.
