I've not elk hunted in a decade ... I have 3 PP's .... I figure its 3-4 PP's now to draw a general muzz tag

4-5 ??

Guesses ?

General?

Depends on the unit...

I will be going in unit 40 when out group gets our tags. We have 13 points now. A couple in our group tried to get tags last year with 12 and they didn't get them

Look on the CPW stats page at how many applied with points in those units. Don't pay attention to the "minimum points required" nonsense. If one guy drew with one point it will show one point needed.

Seems like a lot of people in the nether land of points for the premier units are giving up and hunting elsewhere. There were people with 6-8 points applying for my crappy zero point unit.

BTW. There is no 'General' ML tag anymore. It's all unit specific. Some units have E/S tags, others are bull or cow specific

good gawd ... its been that long since I elk hunted :(

I hunted 78 once upon a time .... is that no longer a unit?

I just checked PP needed on CDW site ... 76,77,79 .... no unit 78 ?

Tag is good for 77 and 78, so odds for 77 will tell you. Looks like 79% of people with 4 points got a tag there, so you are out of luck with 3

The average old "general unit" will take 2-4 points

Stealthy, I think elk were still plains animals when you hunted them last! Good news is that you'll no longer need to stay alert for Indians.

Jaquomo doesn't seem that long ago when Arnie and I were posting about our suck elk adventure does it ?

If you get interested in another unit, let me know and I can get the exact numbers/odds from the last few years from hunterstrailhead.

I'll probably apply for the unit I hunted before ... going back 10-12 years later and trying the same solo DIY backpacking I did once before is very appealing to me.

More appealing than trying a new area to be honest.

Brad, if you come don to 77/78, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction. We've got some places that are great once the bulls move in to rut.

I still owe you for my pronghorn "point" Buglmin !!

Lets see if I can post the last few years from unit 78 drawings

notice how the tag numbers have dropped from 123 to 53. So unless something changes doesn't look good with three points

But 2 points guaranteed a 1st rifle either sex tag. 253 tags given there, but around 30% success

thank you for those stats .... for some reason, I'm drawn to going back where I did my first DIY hunt, back into the area I trekked and learned what little I know about elk hunting ... if that means waiting, I'm ok with that

hell is archery draw only now too ?

From: txhunter58
11-Feb-15
No, archery is still OTC

One other idea, you can put a bull tag as a first choice and a cow tag as a second. Last year, there was about a 33% chance of drawing a cow tag as a second choice.

But get ready for sticker shock: $450 for a cow tag now.
