I got the call last night from a good friend that hunts Colorado every year OTC with some great luck. Long story short, he is taking me out this fall so I can hopefully learn something!
I am so pumped and yet overwhelmed, since I know squat about elk hunting. Guess I had better start reading!

..just so you understand that you will now have to take two weeks off and do it every year after this as you will become addicted as BK points out.

Don't worry your buddy will show you the ropes if you can keep up with him. Hope you get into them, you will never be the same. Best of luck!

Another elkaholic in the making. You'll love every minute of it, especially if you're in shape.

enjoy!!! It might be your first hunt but for sure not your last. GET IN SHAPE. Get a pack, put it on and walk with it on, then find some hills to walk with that pack on. Start out with low weight and work up to 40-50 lbs. Get GOOD boots to walk in. Take lots of pictures and have a blast!

Enjoy the whole experience, including the preseason training. Read everything you can on this forum. Go on Amazon tomorrow and order Matt Dworak's book, Public Land Elk Hunting (DirtyD on the Bowsite).
Do not watch Primos videos, or any other limited/private ranch hunt videos or TV shows. Your hunt won't be anything like what you see there, and it will mess up your expectations.

Well I have ordered the book suggested by Jaquomo, ordered Elk 101, a couple of other instructional tools, and listened to Big Dan's interview.
Only thing left is 5-6 months of shooting, exercising, and reading all the tips on Bowsite!

Jaquomo he may very well have a "Primos" type hunt. I've been on several of these back in the day when I knew NOTHING about killing an elk. It does happen on OTC DIY or with a buddy hunts in CO all the time. God just rains the encounters down as if to show you what you've been missing out on & what is possible. Then you spend years (like Jaquomo clearly stated) trying to get in a similar situation. Lol

Take a look at Elknuts playbook and dvds too. Will shorten the learning curve as will the podcast here with Bigdan.

pop-r, yep, the first evening I hunted with IAHunter last year, his first elk season, we had one of those "Primos" moments too. He turned to me later and said, "That was like something you'd see on a TV show!"
So it definitely can happen.
