Mathews Switchback, 70# DW, 29" DL 340 FMJ, 100 gr slick trick standard. Total arrow weight right at 480 gr.

Hoyt Spyder turbo 70# 30" DL, Easton Axis 300, 125gr Wac'em triton. total arrow about 480gr.

Have killed elk with lighter setups but I get consistent pass throughs with this. Going to a 125gr head helps to up your weight and helps FOC. Also I have noticed 125gr BH are generally built bigger and stronger. easy option if your current shaft will tune with 125 gr BH.

More factors need to be taken into account besides draw weight. If you have a short D/L like I do, I prefer 420-450gr to give me an acceptable compromise between speed and weight. If I had a longer D/L, I'd prefer 450-500 gr.

I am running a a 30" draw length and shooting 70 pounds. My arrows are right at 430 grains total weight with 125 grain broads head. i can get a pass through at 55 yards with that combo if I miss all bone... At 11 yards I can break through both scapulas (done it twice on close range shots).

Thanks guys! My D/L is 27 1/2 but plan to bump it to 28.

If you need a 27 1/2" draw length, I wouldn't bump it to 28. Having a draw length too long for you will cause issues with tuning. Just call it a lesson learned the hard way. The extra fps you get from a half inch or even an inch of extra draw is not worth having accuracy issues. If you're serious about getting the perfect arrow setup for your hunt, I'd call Jerry at South Shore Archery and have him set you up. He's very good at what he does, and will make you the perfect hunting arrow for your setup. My 2 cents.

Its getting a bit short as I've grown since it was set 2 or 3 years back when I was 17 or 18 so I'm thinking I would like it a hair longer..

410-450 will suffice.

400gr minimum w/ a fixed BH. If you plan on shooting a mech bh I'd up it.

Yeah Idyll. Being vertically challenged runs in the family. Unfortunately, short arms come with the territory! lol!

Yup I anchor short on mine face just have always done it. That said I shoot a 27.5" arrow with 190 grains of point weight and my arrow weighs right around 450 grains. I would feel comfortable shooting and NA game animal with my set up. I shoot VPA 175 grainers and I can make them so sharp peoples eyes bleed when they look at them. You will be fine with anything over 400 grains and a brutally sharp head. Shawn

shoot the heaviest arrow you can and still get the job done,. best control is weight.
