I think my elk arrow set-up is good

I punched the trigger big time today while broadhead tuning. Doesn't help it was gusty occasionally and I'm trying a thumb release for the first time. Any way, at 80 yards I sent a 418gr FMJ clean through a 2x4 with my meager 27" draw length. Impressive but expensive. It's buried in the switch grass somewhere. Never did find it.

Too much discussion and debate on arrow wt for large game when its as easy as shooting the proper spined fmj!!

Bet if you use a metal detector you will find your FMJ pretty easy.

I shot two elk with FMJ's and the broad head never penetrated the off side. I realized something was wrong. Calculated my FOC and I was barely over 10%! Now, I put in goltip accu-tough inserts and added two 10 grain weights screwed into the back of the insert. Everything is tuned, sharp broad heads always, stiff spine with 340's. first time I ever had this issue but I switched to FMJ's a few years ago shooting the same set up as before not realizing how the FOC would be affected. I really like the FMJ's and don't see myself switching for a very long time.

Metal detector works great saved lots of cash over the years

Recently I've had to lower my draw weight to the minimum for the sake of shoulder preservation. I went back down from 125 to 100gr tips (hence needing to minimally broadhead tune yesterday). Hate to give up the FOC but man they were really dropping off at 40+ yards. Ended up with 418gr = 10.37% FOC. Was shooting 443gr with 12.73% FOC. My groups were marginally better with that extra 2.4%.

I add two pieces of reflective tape to my arrows. One just fwd of the nock, the other a few inches fwd of the vanes/feathers.
Helps finding them at night.

You got to hate that, when a target ducks the bow sound and you shoot high. Sort of what an elk may do.
Good luck, Paul

You know, I looked at the top picture and noticed a arrow hole in the wall a few inchs to the right of the electrical box.
What is that all about? :) :) :)

the arrwo may be fine but the elk will be too if you shoot him that high.

I'm not commenting on your arrows effectiveness for elk but the reason the 2X4 split is because the grain runs up over the knot to the outside of the board. You could've done that with a nail.

Hit that knot and tell us what happens. Hunt

Paul, my wife hasn't noticed that yet. I'll blind bale shoot in the garage on occasion and had one punch through my block target. Learned my lesson.

Anybody know the best way to remove Goldtip uni-bushings from Goldtip arrows? I need to insert some weights on back of point insert to adjust FOC and not sure how to remove uni-bushing (they were pushed in via a plastic bag (not glue). Perhaps use pliers and just plan to replace w/new? Suggestions appreciated.

DA ELK I don't know Gold tips, but a drill bit inside the shaft and swinging the arrow works on fmj for knocking out inserts.

...with a plastic bag taped to the end so you can find the bushing and drill bit later! lol

Having not been on the range for a fortnight [far too long], this was my first [29" CE Maxima Hunter 350] arrow yesterday (left) from 60 yards. Second arrow yesterday (right) 40 yards. Both 125 grain Slick Trick Magnum BHs.

Now I know that both the longer range shots are a few inches north of centre...but [as I've learnt from Bowsiters]...it does show the benefits of practicing at your furthest range, so closer shots [this is at 20 yards] are on the button (my entire practice session was a grand total of eight arrows, from 60 in to 10 yards and all in the 'zone')

Total finished arrow weight is 438 grains, which from my Hoyt Faktor 34 at 60lbs, gets me 260+ fps [c. 66 ft/lb KE]...I reckon I'd have 12% FOC
I wondered what would happen with a 10 yard shot...it just got silly...passed straight through the middle!!

My Faktor 34 is set at 60lbs, but can be cranked up to 70...planning to work my way up in draw weight gradually, and will be interesting to see what I can obtain by way of an increase in speed, penetration, KE etc
