Hey guys I have been trying to decide on a unit to hunt this fall and have been looking at 53. Like maybe packing in to the west elk wilderness. This is a first time elk hunt for us so this is all new to me. Ive studied the stats and looked at alot of units and I'm kinda leaning towards 53. Also I have been looking at the southern units like in the San Juan and maybe the wilderness areas down there. I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone has any info they would care to share to help steer us one way or the other? Shoot me a pm or post below if you'd like. Thanks in advance!

I live in Kansas as well, and have hunted the West Elks many times...

I have hunted 54 for the last two years. I kind of know 53 by hunting 54. Last year I was literally 50 yards from the line. I will be in 53 myself this year. It is a steep unit.
