Utah elk season opens in less than 4 weeks....September is just over 7 weeks away!
I'm going Wyo Gen tag last 2 weeks of Sept. so I'm still 9 weeks out but it will come up quick! I've been training year round and shooting my bow most every day lately. Got a new Kifaru pack I've been setting up and ready for some weighted hikes in the bluff country of NE Iowa.
Who's going where? What are you doing to prepare?
I'll be hunting mountain goat in little over a month in WY. After that I'll be hunting elk. If I get done early and might chase mulies.
We are headed to new mexico unit 15 on September 4th. Can't wait. It's really coming up quick. What part of NE Iowa are headed to?
I am a little behind but am making it up with 2-a-days. Was initially going solo this year but got a text from my cousin yesterday who said he wanted in. It is easy to build off his enthusiasm. I will be ready to go come time to hike in on September 10th. Can't wait!!!
Muley, I live in Independence. There are some great trails at Backbone and Pikes Peak State Parks we like to run/hike on. I've heard there's also some great trails near Dubuque at Mines of Spain Park I want to check out.
9 days of food and gear already packed for my WY backcountry hunt in mid Sept.
Will hunt 6 days CO before that. Then come back and fill any remaining tags
Yep. I'm ready
I can't freaking wait!!!!!
Just CO for me this year. I work out year round but now I'm alternating 2-4 mile hikes with a 45 lb pack and about 900' elevation change (plus some up-down along the way, with longer hikes with a day hunting weight pack. Also biking on off days and scouting new spots at least once a week.
Living in the mountains really helps with the training.
Will ramp up to five straight days on, two off in a couple weeks. Every outing is a "push" for a little more. I could be ready now, but by end of August I'll be ready for a 25 day marathon of hunting and helping others.
Knock on wood!
Oh yeah, been ready since the day we started packing up the tents last year - going to CO for first couple weeks. Been extra riding bike and walking.
New Bowtech Icon - ramped up my shooting to 30 to 60 arrows a day now - having a blast shooting at 60 and 70 yards almost exclusively (wont shoot at critters that far, but fun practicing) makes shooting at 20 & 30 yards seam way easy.
I have been running, weighted hikes as well as weight lifting for the last few months. I ran into some issues with my right knee I have had work thru but its gotten better. I drew a Utah deer tag again so I am hoping to be there in august. I will also be in Co for the middle two weeks of September chasing elk. Good luck everyone we are on the downhill slide now.
I was ready. I'm in as good a shape as I've ever been in, and have a MT combo tag sitting on the shelf.
I either strained or tore my right ACL Friday night. I go in to the orthopedic specialist this week to see what's up. I'm thinking there is a partial tear.
I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
Limited entry Wyoming elk for me this year. Also have a mule deer tag for the same area...just in case. Seven weeks out, as I plan to be there for the opener and can hunt the entire archery season if necessary.
Have been doing something every day since Memorial Day to prepare physically. Right now, in addition to exercise and light weights, I'm biking every other day 20-25 miles and hiking 3-4 miles on the off days. Like midwest, I have a new Kifaru pack and plan to load it down soon for the hikes.
Original goal was to lose 20lbs over the summer. Have shed 14lbs so far, so that goal is well within reach.
Tuned my primary hunting bow last night. Picked up a new backup bow and will set it up this week.
Missed my western excursion last year for the first time in a long time. Chomping at the bit to get back out there!
Pretty much ready as far as camp gear other than filling the fridge & freezer....
Team Iowa this year in my Utah elk camp....good guy and his newbie buddy to elk hunting....
Team Minn. this year in my Wyo elk camp....fun fella's to share with---
For sure year round training----staying right in my 185--190....
I am content....
Good luck, Robb
Going on my 2nd elk hunt but first time archery. Wy general . Been going lots of Cardio shooting every chance I get . Just got to get some camo cause my current camo is too big for me. Dave
As part of Robb's "Team Minn." :0) I am in better shape now than I have been in about 20 years. I would like to lose about 10 pounds more to get to my goal and that is definitely doable. Gear is organized, but not yet packed. Stoked is an understatement! I can't wait to catch up again with my gracious host in WY! TODDY
Are there WY general tags still available?
No WY general tags available til next year... and you have to have 2 points to be pretty certain it will come in the mail.
Myself and two others are heading to MT; leaving on 9/11. I am not ready yet, but making some improvement all the time. 5-6 mile hikes with about 45 lbs right now, once or twice a week and mixing in mild hill runs a little under 4 miles a couple times a week. I would prefer a little more of each, but that's what I've been able to work in.
I've been ramping up the shooting also, and of course pouring over the maps and GE.
I am not ready but crunching for time to get ready for my September elk hunt. Been in the gym since April and also doing Two a days on weekends to get in shape.
I'm heading to Oregon on 9-12 for 7 days. I work out year round as well, so I'm ready now. Might bump it up so I'm extra ready over the next 2 months. :) GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
I lift things up and put them down! Then I walk up a hill and walk down the hill. Then I swim in the ocean and I'm good to go! Good luck all! C
Been hiking with my pack since May.
Running year around. Anywhere from 25-40 MPW.
Also stairmaster and hiking local stairwells with weighted vest and pack.
Making a scouting trip in two weeks.
Shooting my bow almost every night. I will be doing proficiency test tonight for local urban hunt tonight. Only thing left is to fine tune my bow for broadheads. But I am not too far off and I didn't want to mess with too much before test.
Sounds rough Charlie! ;) be careful not to injure yourself before elk season starts.
Down about 30# with a pretty solid base now and revving it up a bunch for the last 2 months. Shooting a bunch and just trying hard to wait patiently. The pics I am getting of the AZ unit 1 bulls are not helping the last part but make the first part much easier
Been going up and down these stairs after work and some days before work also. 156 brutal steps!! Also hiking with a 40lb pack 5 days a week. And shooting a few rounds a night. I'm pumped and ready to rock!!! Will be in Colorado this weekend with my two boys scouting!
So ready...
CO OTC with a deer/bear tag (primarily a deer hunt that's probably going to turn into an elk hunt the first time I hear a bugle) from the 9th to the 19th.
WY leftover tag from the 19th to the 29th with dad.
Midwest, I grew up in Garnavillo but I live in Iowa City now. Beautiful country back in NE Iowa. Family still lives there, which is nice to be able to go back and visit and hunt. Good luck this fall. Let me know if you ever get in the Iowa City area, I'd buy ya a beer.
Chad429,
I've been doing those stairs for the last couple years too, but I do all 157 of them ;^)
Yeah Mike, but he side hills them as per his photo. Much tougher.
Cheesehead, I just cant finish that last one!! LOL!! I work a couple blocks from there, its a perfect workout.
Fat, slow, but deadly. ready.
Good one Cazador!
Chad, I just work a few blocks away too. I agree, it's a great workout.
I had a secretary who runs marathons and after I started doing the stairs I told her about them. She did a couple flights and she said her legs were sore for a few days. They definitly work different muscles than running.
"Are you ready?"
I was born ready!! The wife thinks I'm obsessed or something like that but I couldn't really hear what she was saying over the sound of my practice bugles on the front porch last night at about 8:30pm. :)And the way my neighbors look at me, I'm on the same level as the strange lady pushing around the shopping cart with elbow long dish gloves on wearing rubber boots and a football helmet. Lol
Im still looking for sheds!!!!
Hiking in HOTTT tick and mosquito infested overgrown five foot high grass allergy sneezing explosions and coming out heavy never felt so good, most are 1-5 pounders and an occasional 5+ and even a 10#er, ha but pulling them out now is hard. Some days you hike for 7 miles and come out empty, others 1/4 mile and come out with 5? YOu also have to focus so intently on looking for the right shapes in the woods with light coming in the canopy with physical and mental fatigue setting in. The best part is you get to see a lot of country and find out where and how they move and i think thats the part i like the best. its a puzzle that you are trying to figure out from 4 months ago. Today was the first day I saw a big boy and instead of running up on it, I slowly snuck up on it after 4 separate days of nothing but white. I Carry my bow and shoot when a I know i have a shot at finding my arrow. Ive been pretty quite and have see a few bulls a lot of cows and does galore, however its only after they jumped cause I was so close always scaring the crap out of me.
Haaaa Im ready!!!!!
Correct----
The bud from Iowa has 16 LE elk points in Utah so with the later by a week dates for 2016 on the LE bow elk hunt he wants to get to know a unit or 2.
So they are doing the $388.00 bow spike/cow and it is valid in most all Big Bull LE units.
I already have 4 elk tags in 3 states so I am going down just for helping out and sharing some knowledge of the unit (s). No tag for me---
Good luck, Robb
No, Quite frankly, I am not ready according to the Bowsite standard. As a faithful procrastinator with 57 years of experience I must be honest with myself. I will be as ready as I can be given my nature and priorities when I jump on the plane and it will be more than good enough to enjoy myself. Looking forward to having a blast on my potentially semi-solo quasi-wilderness elk hunt. How much do those things weigh?
Am I ready? Yes I think and also probably no. I can't wait to experience elk country. I am in pretty good cardio shape and have added muscle. My weight had been staying fairly stable until now. I have started shedding pounds. I am eating pretty good and it is showing. I have been working out 4 times a week since December. I am sure I am no where in the shape as many of you but I am in better shape than I was and I suspect that once I experience elk hunting it will give me a better understanding as to where my body needs to be next year. I feel I am ready to hunt and can handle what is in store for me. Probably no where near as fast as many of you but I can do it. My only concern is packing significant weight in the event I get lucky.
Mentally i'm ready... physically i've got some more work to do to be in wilderness condition. I'm leaving aug 29, pack in aug 30, hunt sept 1-13.
Lot's of rain here in NM... It's going to be good....
I'm starting training today, walkinf, then weighted walks, biking and shooting, most excited about shooting, last arrow I fired killed my bear this spring!
9 days of food and gear already packed for my WY backcountry hunt in mid Sept.
Will hunt 6 days CO before that.
Yep. I'm ready
Been running treadmill on a grade 4 days a week with a 30 pound pack all Year, along with 200 pushups, 200 bicycle crunches, and 200 tricep lifts daily.
Yeah, I'm ready.
First year I elk hunted Colorado (1998), I thought I was in good enough shaped to run down an elk.
Then, the High Country bitch-slapped me back to reality!
Best of Luck, Jeff
God just HAS to be an elk hunter!
I read this thread so now I'm ready....
I like to think I am ready, but like anyone who has been there knows, the mountains will let you know!!!
What i find strange is so many above focus all there energy on the fitness of a hunt if u stay in shape all year then a mild tune up is all u need .. Few tlk bout shooting skills . Im all about the shooting thats what is all about in the end. .
Last night I went out in the backyard right at last light to shoot. I have a target set so I can shoot when I'm grilling dinner or smoking a brisket.
I have a target set up in my basement with my bow leaning against the wall so I can crank out a few arrows whenever I walk by....getting ready for work in the morning, coming home from work, heading out for a workout, whatever.
There is a real nice archery range about 45 min. from my house up in the bluff country of NE Iowa I can throw on my pack and go shoot a round while humping the hills. It also has a nice practice range with marked yardages out to 80.
I am heading to W. wyoming, general tag. extremely lucky to have a best friend, who bought a ranch next to Bridger-teton national forest 5 years ago. I am especially pumped this year, as our two friends from colorado(brothers) are both going to make the trip this year. This was our original crew from 12 years ago when we used to do drop camps in colorado. will be doing two a days from here on out. I am from SE Nebraska, but I was lucky enough to drive through all of NE Iowa on my way to Dells in Wisconsin last week. Wow that looks like good deer country. I'm jealous midwest
My goal is to gain some weight before the hunting starts , long days in the mountains burns a lot of calories,i drop weight fast hard for me to gain it .
I shoot about every other night. I have an 80 yard range at the house. I have a 20 target 3D range 15 minutes from home. I shoot there whenever I can make it. I am not worried about my shooting.
Gear and shooting ya, Long days at work and home projects make it really difficult to get the pack on and do some hiking, glad i have a physically active job. Pretty sure i'am not alone.
I wish I had your problem Cityhunter. I went from 233lbs to 210 lbs in the last 9 weeks. I have 7 more weeks to get to my 197 lb goal. I find that hiking is a lot easier now and I can move a lot quicker up the hills. If I make my goal, that will mean 36 less lbs to haul around with me and I will be able to pack 36 more lbs of meat out each trip. August 1st I start hiking with fully loaded pack. I have game cameras up for extra motivation and additional hiking. <6" 6-shot groups out to 70 yards. Will make sure broadheads are dead-on in about a week.
My knees are shot, I need Lasik, and I haven't seen my bow since last December, so in short I guess my answer is "NO!", I am not ready:(
a sack of these on ones back and hike the mountains.
Dang Flybyjohn that's some going!! What have you been doing? Diet? Exercise? Both?
I try and shoot as often as I can work and home life permitting, which is at least once a week...shooting one shot groups 'cold' gives me confidence...
This 45 yard shot with a 125 grain Slick Trick Magnum was with a very strong cross wind
Ken u hunting in the USA this sept if so best of luck
I am not heading to Kansas til late Oct. but I have one whole room in my house with all my gear laid out. 2 blinds, 6 sets of climbing sticks and two Chippewa stands with ten brackets ready to go. Shawn
I am not heading to Kansas til late Oct. but I have one whole room in my house with all my gear laid out. 2 blinds, 6 sets of climbing sticks and two Chippewa stands with ten brackets ready to go. I also started shooting from longer distances than I normally do, here in NY 40 yards for me is a bomb as most of my stands are set up to shoot 5 to 25 yards. I am shooting out to 70 yards regularly. I do not plan on shooting that far but it makes the 45 to 50 yard shot easier to hit. I also agree with above post about staying in shape, I feel I would never need to get in shape for any type of hunt as I keep myself fit all year. Shawn
I totally agree with Lou. Most people will lose weight on a western mountain hunt and I'd rather go in a little fat and somewhat rested from a fitness standpoint.
"Dang Flybyjohn that's some going!! What have you been doing? Diet? Exercise? Both? "
That would be both. I stopped drinking anything but water and quit eating all the comfort foods. No donuts, cookies, potato salad, pizza, and all that other bad for you stuff. Been eating oatmeal for breakfast (for my high cholesterol) and fruits and vegetables for snacks, a salad for lunch and a good proportioned dinner.
I have a small hill nearby that has about a 1.5 mile 1100 ft vertical climb one way and do that at least 4 times a week, but sometimes I get up there 5 times. I have cut my time up from over 35 minutes to under 26 minutes now. I can make it up and down in just under 40 minutes I am hiking in and checking my game cameras also so that I can learn a new area and that also gives me some exercise. I really need to get started on lifting some weights for my upper body as it is not getting much of a workout.
Once I hit my long term goal of 180 - 185 lbs, I am going to stay that way as long as my health will let me. This loosing at least 2 lbs a week is hard on a man.
Not yet. Equipment and food yes. Hiking and hunting with a day pack on yes. In shape enough to pack out a small bull by my self like the last time no. I will be.
New base camp. No two man tent this time. But I will bring it just in case.
Bow is ready. Hitting the turkey head at 40yds 3 out of 5 shots. Ready for elk season to start. Good luck to all.
I just lost a week of conditioning after falling while elk scouting and twisting my knee. A week of rest is making me feel like a toad, but the knee is doing better and I'm biking today. Back with the pack on Friday, if all goes well.
How bad would that suck if it was during season, Jaq. Hope you heal up quick!
First training hike with the new Kifaru....55 lbs., 6.2 miles. That's the same as 110 lbs. for 3.1 miles, right? ;-)
I know the feeling Jaquomo! I broke my two outside toes on my left foot Saturday. Feels like all the hard work leading up to the season so far is rolling away. At least I can still shoot. Tried to ride a mountain bike (on the road) yesterday. Not sure about that but was desperate to get the heart rate up.
Bloodtrail, I'm hiking on the steepest stuff I can find relatively close to home. For me, that's the driftless area of NE Iowa.
I train in the mountains, so I'm doing up-down elevation with a weighted pack at 9K feet. But for those who don't have that luxury, even doing it on the level has a lot of benefit for strengthening and overall conditioning, especially if they push the speed.
Midwest, it really made me think about that. My knees are good, but this was one of those freaky things that just happened so fast when I stepped on a wet log under grass on the side of a mountain. Funny, but the knee that buckled under me was fine. The one that twisted and hyper-extended didn't start hurting until the next day. Getting old is hell. Twenty years ago it would have been a little sore for maybe a day.
YZF, I broke my outside toe once in early August. By September I was able to hunt, but I could still feel it. Rapid healing to you!
I did my first training "hike" with weight Monday. Haven't weighed the pack but I have a bunch of my gear(tent/bag/pole/stakes and water and a 50 lb sack of mortar so I figured 65 lbs or so. We are short on long hills, but i have a steep one a couple of hundred yards long in the Arkansas river breaks I hike. Pretty humbling the other night as after 50 minutes I was a quivering sweaty mess.
I am usually far ahead of this year but we are going the last full week of Sept instead of 1st or 2nd week due to scheduling constraints, so not too bad.
I am also in my first week of training for a marathon in November so will be doing a bunch of running in the next two months.
I did have my pack full for some day hikes in Grand Teton a few weeks ago, so that helped.
Shooting wise I may be peaking early. 3 arrows last night, 2 at 47(furthest I can go in the back yard) gapping pins. Hit a tennis ball, and center punched 5x ring. 1 at 40...hit tennis ball, called it quits. Now need to start lengthening out and shooting up and down hills some.
Still need to get the gear and clothing together but nothing really changing there this year. We are planning on packing in so have a few items to address with that but nothing major.
More map scouting to do and google earth stuff as we are hunting a new unit(although just one ridge over from a favorite spot(damn point creep...)
I would say I am 60% there right now.
