Some of you may remember my post about two weeks ago about an elk hunt getting cancelled and looking for options. With the power of Google and a little luck, I ended up getting in touch with a guy in Idaho and had a great week. Very rugged area and after many many miles in the mountains was able to put an arrow through the heart of this nice bull!

Nice bull! He should go somewhere around 300-315.
Mind if I ask what unit you got him? Not looking to jump your hunting area, just keeping informal records on where nice bulls are taken in Idaho ... and where the hunting is poor.

Thanks all. I agree with you guys, I've said many times over the years that everything happens for a reason. Some good, some bad. It's not our plan, it's God's plan. That mantra went through my head many times on this hunt as well. There were a few ups and downs, but we got it done. The result was probably the most exciting elk hunt I've been on. We only saw 4 bulls, and heard probably 12-15, but that stuff was either too thick to see them, they were too far away to try for at that time of day, or we decided to go after a different bull. Also saw 5 cows/calves. Each night as we sat at the supper table we would discuss how far we had hiked according to the GPS. Day 1 = 12 miles. Day 2 = 18 miles. Day 3 = 15 miles. Day 4 was when I killed my elk, we were having supper at 2:30AM and were too tired to really even talk. I guessed it to be our easiest day - 8 miles. But the pack out was harsh. 53 miles in 4 days in the Selway Bitterroot.........some of the toughest terrain I've been in and I was thankful to be done.
Sarge, I got him in Unit 12 around the Lolo Pass area.

Thanks. Your bull is now in my notes. Maybe some day I'll have enough data to get F&G's attention. :0)
