Looking for elk outfitter for a back country/wilderness hunt. Would like to hunt from wall tents and horses. Any help would be appreciated.

What state are you looking to hunting?

No state in particular. Colorado, Montana, Idaho maybe Wyoming? Some where with easy draw or OTC tags. Trying to do the hunt in 2017.

Take a look at Scott Limmer with Comanche Wilderness Outfitters too.

Absaroka Ranch, Dubois WY, great camp, not many openings as repeat customers book the few hunts

Would you be interested in a hunt where you can bow hunt for half the hunt and then finish with a couple days of gun hunting? It makes for a nice insurance policy. if not bow it is. Bulls are pretty vocal and the guide is a great friend. Let me know if that grabs you. Don't like to name non-sponsors here out of respect for the ones who pay our bills.

I'd pass on any outfitters that hunt the Montana side of the Absaroka/Beartooth wilderness. It's beautiful country but very, very few elk anymore. I have heard good things about Lee Livingstone and several guys that hunt the Wyoming side out of Yellowstone.
If Montana is where you settle on a backcountry wilderness hunt, I'd look at outfitters in the Bob Marshall country.
Keep in mind, not all wall tent, horseback hunts have to take place in designated wilderness areas for it to be remote.

Look at T.J. Clark @ Wyoming Wilderness Adventures. Out of DuBois. Wild country, great camps, great guides. They use mules if that makes a difference. Rifle & bow, but I doubt you could get in with rifle this year. These guys are elk assassins!

Gerald, Do you know of any outfitters?

Not specifially, RMH. My comments are not based on pro or cons of specific outfitters, just based on my experiences hunting the AB Wilderness for other species. I figure you're more interested in actually seeing and hunting elk than going on an awesome, expensive camping trip. :)

Hunted last year with Justin Adkisson and San Juan Outfitters out of Pagosa Springs Colorado. Sounds like what you are looking for. Deep wilderness, lots of elk, fantastic country.
Good luck!

I would talk to Tom Klumker of San Francisco River Outfitters. He works the Gila in NM and Arizona. I've never hunted with him, but I know him and like him pretty well. He goes by Stoney on this site.

I have no direct experience with these guys, but have spoken with them about elk hunts for myself and wife, they seem good: Wolverine Creek Outfitters - Jackson WY, two camps "lower" which you can drive to, "upper" 25 mile horseback ride in.

+ 1 for tom (Stoney). Hardest part is getting a tag!
