Would you recommend getting Trip/vacation insurance for a drop camp hunt (8 days)? Typically, when is trip/vacation insurance purchase (at time of deposit, when the full amount is due or ??)? Can you recommend anyone? Typical Price? What does and does not the insurance usually cover? Have you ever had to use it? good, bad or indifferent experience??

Asking a question like this is similar to asking medical advice on this site. You will get plenty of answers with absolutely no assurance you have the right ones.
I think you should contact a trip insurance agency and get your answers there.

Talk to the outfitter that you are using for your Drop Camp.
Most are very accommodating if an issue rises. Usually up to a certain time frame you can get your deposit back.
I used Elk Camp Outfitters last year and at one point due to flight being cancelled was GREAT in working with me. It looked like I was going to miss the pack in and loose a day of hunting.
They told me; "just get hear and we will get you in, and you can have another day or two if needed."

My advice, for whatever it is worth, is get trip insurance for any trip that you cannot afford to lose your deposits, license fees, airline tickets etc. The rates are based upon age and cost of the trip. Look at Travel Guard. They have a sportsman's package I believe. Also, if you buy it when you initially book, it provides protection against loss of deposits due to outfitter insolvency. I would never book a trip to Quebec without it.
