I will likely hunt with an outfitter in the future, just to increase the odds of taking a nice bull. Sticker shock on a few recommendations shied me away at $7,500 plus the license, tip, travel, processing etc.......
I did talk with one outfitter in the Bighorns that is more moderately priced at $4,500 that seems to be a good fit and it should only take about 4 points to draw. I really didn't want to burn 8 points on a 4 point unit so I got to thinking that maybe I'd apply with my buddy (he only rifle hunts) if he were interested since he has zero points. Well, I called him and his response was "The one thing I want to do before I die is kill an elk". We've elk hunted MT 3 times with only a spike that I took the first year. Here's the problem........He is fighting cancer and just completed 7 weeks of radiation at Mayo. He is also working on a business deal that could make or break him financially and could also consume a good part of Sept/Oct so he can't commit for the 2016 draw. But to hear him say that an elk hunt is that high on his bucket list, I can't in good concience go without him. I think if we both buy a point this year and apply together next year or the following with an average of 5 points, we can find a good quality hunt. If he is never able to go, I'll still have my points.
Thanks again for the tips guys. If anyone has suggestions on how I can get a bull in front of my buddy for a reasonable price *$5k and less* without having to apply so early in the year, I'd appreciate it.
Bingo Steve!
His exact words were "I may not even be around by this fall". In 4 1/2 years he's had two surgeries, hormone therapy, and now radiation. He's still in phenomenal condition and has a great attitude but is also a realist. He plans his life to live and not die. We'll figure something out as soon as he's ready.
