Crossbow Regulations Question - Utah
Elk
Contributors to this thread:
This forum has always seemed to have the why's that can answer some of those questions you need answers on.
My dad just drew his LE archery elk in Utah. He is getting older and ja some back issues. His Dr. has a letter explaining his problem and is recommending the crossbow.
Two questions for those who may know the Utah Regs for Crossbows.
1.) is there an application that needs to be completed and sent in with a copy of the dr letter in order to get approval to use a crossbow in Utah?
2.) we found a crossbow but has a 4x scope. Can scopes be used in Utah on the crossbow? If so, what is the maximum power?
Thank you in advance for your help! Looking forward to his hunt
What LE tag did your Dad draw? If you have a disability you can use a crossbow, but I don't know the particulars on how the permits work. I believe a zero power scope is all that's allowed for archery.

I'd call the DWR office to make sure what is required to meet this requirement.
Here's the state law and link.
Didn't know the tags had been drawn yet? Congrats!
Ya cards have been hit. He has the Books Archey Elk.
He should qualify for the crossbow as he just cannot hold his compound due to his back injury.
I plan on calling the DWR tomorrow. Their restrictions listed on their website is very clear on the magnification.
Thought I would check here and see someone has any experience with the set up that can be used.
Thanks
No clue as to your questions but just an FYI there is no such thing as a 0X scope, I think ben h meant 1x scope.
Thanks Zinger. I have read up quite a bit today and just found out a 1x should work to your point of 0x. We sould be good I think. Will firm it up with the Dwr tomorrow
Some states I think it has to be a mobility impairment to use a crossbow, Or just claim he is amish!
I ran into an amish guy who was hunting w/ crossbow in NM. He was hunting deer and elk, he'd already harvested his deer. I can't make sense of it, maybe someone here can.
Not to hijack the thread, but in response to Ohiohunter, here in NM it is legal to use Xbow during rifle (any weapon) and muzzle seasons. But NOT during an archery season (except with doctor letter approved by G&F).
It was during archery season, 1st to be exact.
I stand corrected. I meant no magnification, 1X.
