Exercising with a Purpose?

I'm not a fan of going to the gym or typical weight training. If possible I like to exercise with a purpose. Recently my neighbor had a few trees cut down. I cut the logs into manageable pieces, moved them to my yard and hand split them with my splitting maul. I ended up with 3 cords of wood and a work out for 6 weeks or so.
What else do people do to exercise with a purpose?
I sign up for several events so I am constantly training. I often train with friends who are signed up for the same events. Lots of fun and makes you work harder.
Cruise timber and/or run big chainsaws daily. I swing a splitting maul during my off time. God Bless
is signed up for an elk tag and for my sins i won the lottery and got one. now i have a reason to train harder for the next 3.5 months.
I do volunteer trail maintenance with the Forest Service.
Good luck, Robb
3 prong approach. Total Gym circuits 3x weekly, yoga 3xweekly, and hikes up and down steep mountains at least 3x weekly (From 1 july-season start with a ruck and 8 gallons of water
I see instant results daily by tracking my blood sugar. I'm a type 2 diabetic and discovered it about 6 years ago. Was never really overweight but I have no interest in the end of my life being miserable, sickly and filled with pain. So..... I exercise daily with purpose: to keep blood sugar as normal as possible. Immediate gratification. It's amazing to see a high glucose reading become normal after an hour workout.
Good for you, SteveB. I wish more people had your attitude when it comes to treating disease and injury. Most are relying strictly on the meds.

I too was diagnosed type II 2 years ago. Off meds completely now and normal blood sugar by the above workout and low carb diet. Just off bread, sugar, noodles. 60 gram carbs per day and doubled protein, lots of fresh vegies.
My wife and I are walking the 190-mile Coast to Coast route across the north of England, from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire; total ascent is equal to Everest, over 12 days hiking
We've been training for several months, carrying at least 90% of total weight loaded in our packs [I'm running a Kifaru EMR II on a duplex frame with 55# for two weeks gear; tent, sleep system, food, clothes and water]...the only things missing will be my bow and elk!
I'm planning to set my boots in elk country before too much longer so anything I can do that is 'training with intent' will stand me in good stead
Good luck and good hunting!
Find a nice catfishing cove, and dump the 'yak in the lake about a mile away. You'd be surprised how much of a workout it is paddling a loaded kayak for a couple miles whenever there isn't a current to push ya.
I just got back from a 8 day 'vacation' to the Quetico where paddling a solo canoe was very good for the arms/core.
I have cut down 5 trees in my yard and am splitting them with a mall. Good work, but it is a little lopsided unless you can swing that mall with either hand (I can't).
i like to go on long hikes...
30 to 40 minutes of very brisk walking 5 days a week unimproved surface, bleachers closer to a big hunt. Main thing is being persistant.
I "exercise with a purpose" every time I go to the gym. Whether it's training for a hunt, living longer, having a better quality of life, etc etc etc. The 6-7 days a week in the gym always have a purpose.
My wife and I like to do challenging hikes, but since those are quite a distance from my home I mainly run, bike, and strength train at home. Around home I usually try to do work the hard way without gasoline. My neighbors think I'm crazy at some of the stuff I do that could be done in a fraction of the time if I just paid someone to do it with machinery. But one other thing that's a lot more fun that wears me out is a day of kayak fishing.
Speed-digging and hauling dirt out of my wife's massive "botanical gardens" today so I can load up my dog and get back up to the cabin to speed hike with a loaded pack, which is part of my "exercising with purpose".
90 minute hikes in the hills with a pack and I push mow about half of my 11 acre yard. I have a REAL hard time getting to the gym these days.
Reasons for exercising with purpose:
1. Diabetes- medical necessity for control of blood sugar 2. Age- fitness to hunt & play golf 3. Retirement- I'm always behind, so I have to move fast to avoid getting further behind
Single events just get you sore....you need to make fitness part of your life plan,,,if yu were doing something like this 4 times a week week in and week out for life that is what you want...
Don't forget a good diet. A 5000 calorie diet and workout can still plug the pipeline(s) longterm...
I haul a lot of hay. And last week rowed a raft for four days. Next month I have two five day raft trips then more hay. And now since being retired I work out with my wife. The hunt keeps me motivated!
How long does it take to push mow 5 acres kota? That would seem like an inefficient use of time to me.
I typically lose 10-15 lbs. during the summer.......from scouting. Serves two purposes: one, the hiking is strenuous mountain hiking, so it's great for getting into, or staying in shape. And, two, since it's scouting, my hunting (bear, deer and hogs) season is more likely to be successful.
Never mind... I thought this was about swimming around in a tank at Sea World.....
X2 Adventurewriter! Not many hunts can kick your butt like elk hunting varied terrains! This is especially good info the older you get!

Siding my house. Up and down the ladder as well as carrying Hardie siding. After the 1st 10 hour day doing this my rectus femoris had a Charlie horse so bad I almost puked. Heh Heh.
Im with Royboy....baled 950 square bales last week...time you handle them loading and unloading that's about 100,000#'s in three days
Just rode 25 miles and 3,000 feet of climbing on my mountain bike...to the archery range and back.
Just had some pulled pork, a beer and getting ready for a nap! You guys made me tired:)
JK... I am not taking a nap. I walk 3-4 miles a day, on UN-improved dg trails. 3 days a week with 30 lb pack on and I work... Oh and it's 110 here today, 120 tomorrow... That will wear you out very fast and cut weight like crazy! When I get serious, I usually lose 15-20lbs in a month. I am pretty lean anyway but that is what my body does.
