Buck No. 2 from Kodiak recently was one I kinda wish I didn't shoot. I really missed judged him. That's what you get for taking long shots. I shot this one at 45 yards, which is a very long way out there for me.

Buck No. 3 was an 8 yard shot after calling him in using alder thrashing and my decoy hat. Until I shot this guy, I think Buck No. 1 was my widest Sitka ever, this one is an inch wider inside spread. Old mature buck. I have one more tag left for POW Island for which I leave on Saturday to fill.

I wish I would have taken the time to clean the water off my camera lens on Buck 3. It was raining pretty hard with about a 35 MPH wind that day.

Those are some great bucks Bob. Your timing will be perfect. The bucks are already chasing does here on POW. This last weekend I called in a doe with this buck hot on her heels.

Another great buck, congrats. Am I right in assuming when you say you called in the doe you used a fawn distress call for that?
Do have better luck with that technique rather rattling?

I was using a doe bleat this time not a distress call. I have both bucks and does respond well to this call during the rut.

Bob/Mark,
I've seen the famous little wood/reed deer call. You have talked about the bleat. Do Sitka's grunt and wheeze like a whitetail? If so, have you tried it and have you had any success? I have wheezed in a couple whitetail bucks an was amazed at the reaction from them.

I really haven't used a snort-wheeze much at all with Sitka's, but I hear them do it all the time. They are a very vocal and gregarious deer with a lot of social interaction. I guess I've never really had to use the snort-wheeze because shaking alder or willow branches and my decoy hat works so well.

Yes and Yes to the snort wheeze question. I always carry multiple types of calls. And they all work some of the time. But some are definately better than others.

And here is buck number three. Sorry for the poor quality pic, he died in a muskeg mud hole. I cleaned him up the best I could. Not the biggest buck on the block, but when he came in I just couldn't help myself. He'll make for some good eating.
