Mule Deer Draw?

I have put in for a deer tag in unit 78 in Colorado for the last two years. I put in for one this year and have two preference points. I was sure I would draw last year with one point. Does it usually take several points to draw a deer tag? This is not a quality area. Surely I will draw this year? I am a non resident. How many points do non residents usually need to draw?
Arrowflinger, you can find out how many points it took to draw unit 78 last year by looking at the CPW "Statistics" page on their website. It will tell you how many NR tags were available, how many applied, with how many points.
If there were more people applying with the number of points required than the number of available tags, the number may increase by one point this year. This is what we refer to as "point creep". Some units go up one point every year, so if you are a couple points behind you may never draw.
Be careful with the link called "preference points needed". That only tells you how many the lowest person drew with. So if one guy drew with 2 and everyone elkse had 3 or 4, it will tell you "2".
Some units take zero. Others take a whole lot of points. Just depends on the demand and number of tags. A pronghorn unit I'm chasing used to take 5 points, reliably. Then they reduced the number of tags and some of the "hunting services" started promoting it as a trophy unit. Now it takes 13 points to have a 50/50 chance.
Jaquomo explained it all.
Thanks Lou, I will look it up.
'flinger, are you sure you had 1 point going into the draw last year? I assume you're talking about the archery deer tag for unit 78 (hunt code DE077O1A)? The report shows that every NR who put in with 1 point drew, and 9 of the 62 who put in with zero points also drew.
Double check your points, and make sure the system shows that you have 2 points currently, prior to this year's draw.
Agree with sticksender if you put in for an archery tag you should've drawn last year, if you put in for a rifle tag chances were slim.
Sticksender is right on. If you applied for a archery tag with one PP there is no reason why you shouldn't have drawn since it says zero NR PP were needed to draw. If you put in for a rifle tag no way you would draw with one PP and maybe not even this year with two PP. Good luck.
Yes, I have two points going in this year. And I put in last year with 1 point. I have been putting in for the archery hunt. I don't hunt with a rifle. I don't know what is going on. If I don't draw this year I will contact CPW. Thanks for your infromation.
Is there any way the OP can check to see what he put in for last year? It sounds like he thinks he put in for an archery tag, but maybe put down an incorrect code. If he did put in properly and they screwed up last year, it would seem to me that they owe him a tag this year without even having to draw for it.
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I just looked at my preference points. Yes I have 2 points going in this year. But it said I put in for left over draw last year. That was my mistake, I checked the wrong box. I got a letter last year stating that my refund would be held until after the Left over draw. I am not sure how that works. But if they put me in for the left over draw, would my application be put in for the regular draw first? That may be where I screwed up. But I made sure and checked the refund box this year. Maybe you guys can explain that to me. I will try to read up on left over draw. I'm not sure about how that works. Anyway, I should draw this year? I hope! LOL Arrowflinger.....
Can't get the left over "draw" without being in the regular draw. Seems like you can pick a year to look at applications on file. See if your tag last year ended in an "A" or an "R" or an "M". If it was anything other than an " A" then you have your answer. "A" being archery and the other two being rifle and muzzle loader.
Leftover Draw is just the post-draw instructions for CDPW in case you don't draw your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice hunt code.
If you entered DE077O1A as your First Choice hunt code with 1 point last year, you would've drawn, barring an application error. But it's really hard to make an error with the on-line app process.
If you printed out your application receipt last year, check it to be sure the hunt code reads exactly as DE077O1A. If not, that could explain it.
