Hey guys,
Drew a unit 54 tag this year and will be looking to do a solo pack in prior to opening day and then hunting for 7 to 10 days.
Anyone with any experience in this unit? Feel free to pm any info.
Also, would it be worth it to pack in a flyrod? Thanks,
Bill

I talked to the biologist in 54 a few months ago. He is helpful. I would give him a call if you didnt already.

I don't have a lot of help but I did see a few nice bucks last year. Nothing like what I guess it used to be like but there are some in there. The ones I did see were not above timberline either. I did see a lot of does so that's a good sign as far as helping numbers increase.

Hunted the West Elk in 54 last year for my first hunt out west and Google earth and topo maps did not prepare me for the terrain that is out there. The rain was bad but the blisters were worse. Had an elk and mule deer tag and didn't see either in the wilderness and hiked in over 6 miles up to 11,500ft. Moved to another piece of public ground nearby and saw one small buck and almost got a shot at a 6x6 elk but that's bowhunting. The area in the wilderness looked promising but the thunderstorms and blisters kept us from getting a good look at all that it had to offer. We were there opening week and there was a fair amount of people in the wilderness, both hunting and hiking. Good luck. Can't wait to go back and try again.

Good luck, I put in for the same unit as my first choice and came up empty.
