I'm just starting the planning stage for a mule deer hunt next season. I've wanted to do a solo western hunt for quite some time and I think mule deer would be a good place to start.
Let's start with what I'm looking for. First and foremost is spot and stalk. No stands please, I can get plenty of that here in the midwest for whitetails. I really like rugged country and would prefer a higher elevation hunt. For me, deer density will trump trophy potential. I will be hunting with my recurve and closer shots are the name of the game, so anything will be trophy class to me.
Any advice on what states or areas to start my research in would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you want a high elevation spot and stock muley hunt, try area 10 Nevada Ruby's hunt.

Another one is Utah general archery tag. Last year I hunted the La Sal area around moab. I had a fun hunt seen lots of does, a good group of bucks, elk, black bears and shoot my first muley at 20 yards while I was in camp. If you don't fill your tag during the archery season you can hunt the front extended and catch the rut and hunt in snow.
There are a lot of areas you can draw in Co as well for archery with out any points.
