Photos of Columbia Blacktail Deer?
Mule Deer
Contributors to this thread:
Heading to CA in a few weeks to hunt Blacktail deer - a species I've never laid eyes on before. Please post any photos you have with your assessment of the quality of the buck. Thanks in advance! Mike
Good Luck. A true Columbian Blacktail is a very tough trophy!!
good luck a great species to chase in July .
From NorCal, Mendocino Co...
Want dead ones, track down Matt...
;-)
The big ones are much easier to get on trailcam than they are to kill ;)
Best of Luck, Jeff
Very helpful, thanks for posting.
Quality Columbian Blacktail
Big 4x3 Columbian blacktail. I would say shoot this one if you see it
There are a few really nice blacktails above, especailly with archery equipment. If you want to see some close pics of Columbian blacktail with scores attached to get a better idea of scoring, let me know.
Zackman, thanks. I don't need to know scores...not that important to me. I just wanted to get a sense of what a "mature" buck looks like, and this does that perfectly. I hope to have pics to post in a few weeks!
Good luck Mike! Depending on where you are hunting, the most "mature" buck you see may only be a forked-horn. We have that problem along the coast range with blacktails never becoming more than 2x2. However, if you are hunting on a quality ranch, where they manage the trophy quality, then you should be able to look over some really nice deer.
Blacktails are a blast to hunt. Hope you have a good time!
Mike if u wait for that last big buck i hope you have a ton of time and years
Wilderness in B zones. Backpack in 8-10 miles and you'll see some deer like these......and better.
Very true Roy. The biggest Blacktail I have ever seen alive was in a northern wilderness area
I need to go after one in Velvet...A-zone in three and a wake up!
George.....you and I need to combat the wonderful A zone before I get out of here. Next year, amigo!
Deal Roy, would be a blast...
Great idea if you guys post up pics with final scores so us flatlanders can get a better idea of what we're looking at:)
Thanks,
Mark
Nice buck Kyle! Seems like I've been saying that (or ram or bull or boar a lot lately)! You are on a roll! Score?
Mark
I think he was around 130". I'm going back next year to Oregon. This was a really fun hunt. Thanks.
Here are a few Mark. I'll post with gross green and net scores.
113" Gross Green 104 2/8" P&Y
105" Gross Green 100 1/8" P&Y
110" Gross Green; 107 1/8" P&Y
130" Gross Green; 125 7/8" P&Y
120" Gross Green; 114 2/8" P&Y
102" Gross Green; 96 4/8" P&Y
105" Gross non-typical. Sorry for the old pic (pre-digital). Try not to be jealous of my bandana...
I hope this helps any of you guys coming out to hunt these deer. If you haven't hunted them, I highly recommend it. Beautiful and humbling, Columbian blacktail are a blast to hunt with bow and arrow. Good luck everyone!
Holy cats Zack! Great bucks for sure...that 130" is a toad! That spot and stalk scenery isn't bad either...wow!
I will display my ignorance (and laziness)...what is P&Y minimums?
The bandana and the facial scruf is classic...college genre?
Mark
Mark,
P&Y was 90" until about 10 years ago when it was raised to 95" for typical.
I was much cooler in my college days...not!
Zack is the man. I better pick up a bandana for my trip in a coue weeks. I want to fit in with the locals ;)

Better wear tie-died shirts and make sure to have plenty of "herbs" then Jim!
Zack didnt u kill the big one on the miller ranch ?
City, the one on the website logo is Matt's
Yea Bob Rich finally got a website!! Bob have u ever hunted the Miller ranch great place to score a good blktail without breaking the bank . Matt, Gus and Ike have killed some dandys on the Miller ranch . Blktails were made to be hunted in a spot and stalk type hunt. A great July hunt
Not yet, spoke with Richard a lot last summer & fall for this year...just couldn't work things out with his openings and my schedule...so, maybe next year.
City,
Yes. The 4x4 was with Richard
I got this one in August 2012 in California. I hunted with Jim and TinaMarie Schaafsma at Arrow Five Outfitters. He scored 100 7/8" gross and 99 5/8" net.
Some great Buck's Zack...
This one came from Oregon in November of 2013. He scored 128 2/8" gross, 124 0/8" net P&Y.
If I didn't already have a blacktail on my Oregon hunt, I would have taken any of these ones earlier in the hunt.
MB Mule I figured you'd jump in at some point.
My first and largest...127 5/8 P&Y
All the rest of these would make P&Y minimum but are un-scored and are all CA wilderness bucks.
Buddy's wilderness buck from last year.
Sorry for the double post.
^^^^ show off...
Great collection!
Yikes! Nicely done Matt!
Mark
Now that's a serious collection of archery blacktails! You need a wide-angle lens just to fit them all in. Very impressive Matt. Thanks for sharing.
KTH, I lurked for a while and then couldn't help myself.
My hunting partner's Columbian Blacktail from a B zone wilderness. Grossed 160" and netted 151 2/8" P&Y / B&C. It was the state record for a while and is currently #2.
This is the current #1 archery Columbian Blacktail from the Golden State. It officially measured 157" net P&Y.
Very nice Matt...are those all CA bucks?
DW, they are all from Mendocino County.
Congrats to you on your fine collection of wilderness blacktails - there is a whole other element to those hunts.
Hi guys!

It has been a very longtime since I have seen this many posts on a Columbian blacktail thread. Excellent blackies everyone!
Not the biggest but by far the best wilderness blacktail hunt I've had.

Gross close to 130" nets 127"...Not bad for a straight 3X! ;-) Mendocino County
Great bucks gentlemen...
Nice blacktail George. You can tell an "Ike" buck because it doesn't have any eye guards :)
"Nice blacktail George. You can tell an "Ike" buck because it doesn't have any eye guards :)"
Hate you...Lol
Damn Matt, always shoot's 'em before I could get there...
Here is a field photo of my largest blacktail to date, he grossed 160 2/8" and officially netted 152 4/8".

Dang, there's some great blacktails on this thread.
Getting me revved up. I'm gonna spend a couple days in A North on public land in a couple weeks on my way to my annual abalone/salmon trip.
I've been wanting to do a B zone wilderness trip really bad. I think that's going to have to happen next year.
Well, I was hunting with Ironmike, and we are just finishing up. Thought I would post a pic of my deer. Mike killed a nice one as well and suspect he will be posting as well.
--Jim
Thanks for all the help guys. It paid off!
Beautiful Columbian Blacktails gentlemen! Congrats
Grats guys!
There's a blacktail meat pole thread, you should post them there too.
