I signed a lease today. Its the first time I've ever done one. I had to agree to shoot only 130" or above bucks and/or does.

Is it pretty easy to tell a 130 incher? The guy I leased the property from tells me just be patient and I will see them.

I guess I need to learn how to field judge antlers. Something I've never done before.

Do any of you have some pics of 130 class bucks?

these are all definately in the solid 130 range. so many threads about "guess this score" that are just way off base with the estimates. these are very much on the money with the scores given. very nice deer guys, and thanks for posting them. the best way to judge a 130 buck is with your bow still hanging on the hook. if it is in your hand, your estimate will certainly be off. in life, when the buck is moving, air in his lungs, and approaching your stand, a 118 will look like a 140, so be careful. where is your lease?

This is going to be tougher than I thought :)

Seriously these are some nice bucks compared to where I'm used to hunting.

The owner told me as long as its close to 130 he'll let me slide. I'm cool on it though. My will power is strong.

Jackson cty MI.

Its nice and close to home so I should be able to hunt it quite a bit. Sharing it with some other people I've yet to meet. Probably kind of risky the way I entered into it. But the owner seems really cool and the property is located in a really good spot. I figure if everyone else is holding out for the 130 or better the hunting should be pretty cool.

134" gross, 129" net. My tip would be if he looks like a 130", don't shoot. If he looks like a 140"+, then shoot! A typical frame is not that hard to field score, if you have not gotten too excited. Just remember that tine length will really make the difference.

From: Knife2sharp

Most 8 pointers will not book, let alone make 130". For an 8 to make 130" it needs to be wide, tall and with good mass - atleast 3 years old. For an 8 the spread should be past the ear tips, and G2's and G3's should all be over 8", and the brow tines atleast 6". These scores alone will put it in the mid to upper 90's alone, then add on the mass measurments.

Like Knife2sharp said, it would take an exceptional 8 to make 130. Also remember that a buck's rack typically looks a lot bigger from the rear. Getting a couple of views will put the size in perspective.

Some not-so-hard-and-fast rules - look for the rack to extend past the ears. Look for the main beams to extend to the nose. Look for good tine length. A buck's ear will be about 7" long. You can use that for comparison on tine length.

This buck ended up netting 125 1/8 inches. hes a clean 8 and i thought for sure he was way more than that when I shot but it is true an eight has to be exceptional to be over 130.

Right off the bat an eight as compared to a 10 looses 2 tine measurements, 2 mass measurements and typically an 8 pt has shorter main beams than a 10 pt.

If this buck would have had 2 more tines at 3 inches in length he would have been in close to 140.

From: ROUGHCOUNTRY
29-Aug-11

ROUGHCOUNTRY's embedded Photo
ROUGHCOUNTRY's embedded Photo
Sorry, but you don't lose two mass measurements. They are taken half way between the G3 and end of main beam. If you kill a six point, you still get the four mass measurements per side. In that case, you divide the main beam into thirds from the G2.

For instance, if you see a giant eight-point main frame like this, you better shoot. This one grosses over 170 with 14" G2's and 6.5 inch bases along with 26 inch main beams.

So what is the difference between gross and net? It looks like net is always less than gross. Am I okay as long as it grosses 130? It seems to me that grossing 130 even if it doesn't net 130 it would still be considered close.

Guess I'm going to have to talk to the owner some more about that.

Thanks for all the pics by the way. You guys have some really nice bucks!

Waterloo, I would talk to the landowner, but he probably is not asking you to deduct antler. He just wants 130 class which means gross. Gross is the total amount of antler before taking off for lack of perfection. Ben's buck above will deduct for having a ninth point.

Too many people seem to get tripped up with scoring deer on the hoof (myself included). Rather than set a minimum score or amount of points...maybe you could suggest that the landowner sets a general age requirement instead...such as mature bucks only (3.5yrs and older)?!

Sometimes it's better to shoot a 115 - 120" 4.5yr old than a 125" 2.5 yr old. No matter where you hunt, some bucks have more potential than others, and you'll never know if you don't let 'em grow.

Just because they are a 10 doesnt mean they will hit the 130 mark.

As you can tell spread is past the ears.

You need some mass and good tine length to make it there!

This one is a little over 120 gross and 6 1/2 y/o 28in neck, add some decent G-4's and you would have a 10pt 130 class deer. Remember most size restrictions are based on gross scoring not net, so you have some lee way, but as others have said, to make it with an 8pt would be 1 of the "binoculars not needed" deer but any decent 10pt should make it in most mid western areas.

Waterloo: I would show the LO this thread and pics and see if this is what he was thinking or more in the 120" range.

I would actually see if you could make a deal around maturity - maybe bucks that are 4 1/2+ yo.

That way you may save a young buck who may be 130" and a year or two more could produce a great buck and maybe shoot a 125" buck that's 5 1/2 yo but will never get any better.

Either way, good luck!!!

I posted in this thread even though it was 4 years old above because before I went out hunting this year I was looking at it and I found it very helpful. From: LYON

For a very rough on the hoof estimate on an average sized deer. Add the lengths of the G2, G3 and G4 (if present) multiply by 2 and add 95. So for instance, a buck comes in and you can see a 7" G2, a 6" G3 and a 3" G4. 7+6+3=16. 16x2=32. 32+95=127. It's very rough but a decent way to get an idea. The 95 accounts for mass, main beams, brows (G1) and inside spread.

I haven't put a tape to him yet, but this one should be mid 130's gross.

I think by now Waterlooboy has a good sampling of 130ish bucks. So WLB, how is the hunt going this season? Have you seen or gotten a chance at a 130+" buck yet?

This is not a good pic but he nets 127-1/8th. He may be the grandson of the other buck I posted. Same rack configuration. Shawn

Wow, I bet they are related Shawn, assuming it's from the same area. Very cool.

Never ground checked this one but it’s the only 130” I have on my phone. I’d say he’s within a few inches of 130.
