Started prebaiting a couple of wolf stations yesterday to prepare for a busy season on the trapline. The first client starts Dec 13 and we will do our best to keep you updated as it happens. So far we have noticed lots of snowshoe hare tracks and lots of lynx tracks. This fox picture was taken during our late season moose hunt during which we had many fox and lynx sightings. Lloyd has been busy making more wolf snares for a new wolf station that will hopefully snare wolves from a new pack. Jack
I cant wait for this thread to begin again. It's great getting to "go check traps" with you guys every morning! I know you put a lot of work into the trapline and it's very generous of you to put in all the time it takes to share it with us as well!
Looking forward to every update, Jeff
Oh, hell yea! A bowsite favorite
Another thing to keep up to date with. Love it!
We so do love the "trap thread"! Mike
Save a lynx for me, Jack. That's top on my list for our trip with you in January.
Well, maybe above that is to not have -40 temps.
GOOD I look every day OLD trapper
About the only reason I venture onto the Bowsite anymore. I love this thread
One of my favorite threads of the year.... Thanks.
Great way to get through the winter really enjoy following along!
I was so excited when I saw it was finally time for THE TRAPPING THREAD! I sooooo enjoy this. Thanks again in advance. You can't post too many pics either. Pics of sets, baits, or anything else you may think of. I get tempted to book a trip every year.
Always look forward to this thread. It is one of the best updated threads on bowsite. Lloyd and Jack have a great operation and I can't speak highly enough of their hard work and dedication to the outdoorsman that comes to visit. I need to do this trapline trip someday with the little guy. JJ
rock50 if the 2 lynx hunters we took out is a sign of what is to come it looks good. Both tagged out in morning of the 2 days hunted. We don't have dogs but Lloyd was able to borrow 2 hounds for the hunt. Jack
Here's a picture of a lynx mount from one of last years trips. I've already seen a black wolf hitting one of the baits. From the sign that we've seen already this year it looks like we'll be catching lots of lynx, fox, marten and wolves. We haven't seen much for wolverine sign yet but that normally comes a little later when the baits have been out longer.
First load of bait for the trapline, we also got a mule deer hit on the highway. Jack
What is all of the bait? Looks like hides. Just curious. As always, this thread keeps me coming back.
Beautiful lynx Jack! Look forward to following along again this year!
Mark
Best thread of the year....can't wait
Looking forward to my trapping adventure in January 2015.
Keep the pictures and updates rolling.
See you in 14 months!
Russell
Lloyd, and Jack, I noticed that you mostly use snares on the wolfs, here in Kansas we have a lot of coyotes, I would like to try the snares in the timber or brush. what is the best set and do you make runs or guide them into your snares ? I know they must be circling your bait and you have a system, would you mind sharing with me ? thanks John Garrison
Kansas- I would assume they set snares on pinch point trails going into the bait. Just as in deer hunting, set/hunt the funnels and your catch rates will increase.
Goat- Do you trap solely for guiding? Also when does your fur normally prime up? Caught this yote yesterday and still isn't prime in nc.
Here a cool little trophy that I just received for most wolves last year. Kansas: our best sets have been where there is an open area to put your bait with thick brush around the edge of it. We snow shoe trails from the bait to where the snares are to be hung. We'll use around 50 snares per bait station. Lots of snares and lots of bait. Our fur is pretty prime normally by Dec. 1st. This year has been warmer then normal but this week it's been getting pretty cold and fur should be at it's prime. I shot a coyote yesterday and the fur was looking real good.
Are you guys going to do the trail cam again? That was really cool last year.
Here's a shoulder mount of a wolf that I just picked up from the taxidermist last night. A shoulder mount of a wolf isn't a mount that I thought would look good, but it does look pretty sharp and it don't take up much room.
Awesome mount! Looking forward to seeing it in person this coming August.
Awesome mount! Looking forward to seeing it in person this coming August.
I actually think the shoulder mount looks better than a full mount. I love it!
I've never seen a shoulder mount of a wolf. That's actually pretty cool.
Look forward to your thread. I would like to do this some year!
Beautiful mount and Lloyd and Jack Congrats on the award!
I love following this thread every season. Looking at the load of bait, I just figured you had a brown truck. I bet it's hard to get out the mud & blood when it gets cold!
Jack,
tell me about these trapping trips. is this something you guys do as guides? I have trapped my whole life, but short of going to Alaska the only chance I will ever have at a wolf legally is drawing a tag, which isn't happening, and id love to nail some lynx. we have marten here but are limited to two.
not sure if a mn resident can trap there, but how do these trips work, or do you even take clients on them? ive not really got a lot of interest in shooting a wolf or lynx, but would love to trap some.
michael
thank you for your answer , Kansas good trapping to you.
Goat Guide's Link
mn_archer, these are guided trips that we take clients on where you get a chance to hunt for wolves, lynx, and coyote. You would accompany us on the line checking and setting traps and snares. Most of the traps are set before the client's arrival because the trapline is so long and it takes a few days for the traps to start producing. We do get a chance though to set more traps while you are here. It takes 3 days to check the whole line so on a trip a client will go through the line twice and on the second round will be checking the traps that they help set.
Our first client of the season arrives on Friday from Washington. We have been pre-baiting the stations and have seen quite a bit of wolf and lynx activity. We have quite a few snares and traps set already and we are excited to get out for the first check and hopefully we will have some time on the way out to the Lodge from the airport to check a couple on the way to camp! I was meaning to take some pictures of the sets, but forgot my camera the last couple of days so no picture update, will remember it for the check though. Even after pre-baiting we still have several thousand pounds of bait waiting to be used. Jack
I put bait out for the first time at this site last Sunday and today I went back to put a new stove in the cabin and it was already loaded with wolf sign. We have wolves hitting at least 4 of our stations now. James shows up Friday, should be a good first trip.
Here's about a 35 inch bull that was on the trail while out on the line today
Lloyd/Jack - My Dad isn't very computer savvy, but he says hello and thanks again for a great hunt. He shot 2 big black wolves with you guys a few years ago. There is a video on youtube capturing it all. Anyway, here they are mounted.
You can kind of see the Lynx and Marten in the background that he trapped with you guys.
Hi Tom, the mounts look good. I really like the second wolf. Say hi to Hank for us.
We love following your threads! Good luck to you and your guests. We're looking forward to more great pictures.
-Matt and Cheryl
JAck ill be watching this thread. im not sure any trapper has ever lived without deaming of one day heading to the far north.
i somewhat have a chance to run a line in Alaska and work out of a friends cabin, but i have no idea how many trappers are in this area, if any. and the logistics of getting there are challenged to say the least. either the rivers all have to be frozen over without much overflow so i could snowmobile in the 100+ miles, or everything has to be flown in. if sledding in, id have to make a few trips with gear, fuel, food etc. i will make it happen sometime though,
michael
I WILL do this trip someday. Awesome!!
So things should get really busy now on the line with our first check of the traps starting today. James had some luck on his way out to the lodge from the airport with 2 coyotes, 4 marten, and a weasel. Dad said there was a wolf on the ice so hopefully they get lucky with that tomorrow. We did pick up a mule deer on the highway on the way out and will put him to good use soon. Here is James pulling out 2 coyotes after him and Lloyd checked the first wolf station, no wolf sign thou. Jack
The 4 marten and 2 coyote from today. Jack
Nice job! do you have to get a permit to pick up road kills? we need to get a permit from a conservation officer here for every kill
And the weasel. mn_archer we are so lucky to be able to trap right out our backdoor. These animals today were trapped just getting to camp from the airport. If marten prices hold then you can make good money trapping in the north. Jack
And here we go! We love this thread! Mike
Shot this morning, James is one lucky, lucky guy. Post more details later when I have a moment. Jack
Awesome...way to go James...
Awesome color, congrats!!
mn_archer We can take road kill for the trapline just have to report it to the conservation officer but it is them who call us sometimes to let us know where something is hit on the highway. The guys are checking traps right now and I finished skinning James wolf. I rough scored the skull at 17&3/8 inches, a big one. We have been putting out bait down the lake from the lodge where Lloyd and James walked to this morning. As it got shooting light they had this wolf out in the middle of the lake and James pulled off a great shot. Not sure how the rest of the trip will go with the weather, right now it is raining and the lake has literally got open water showing up since early this morning when the wolf was shot. The snow around the lodge is even disappearing with bald spots across the lake in the field. Not sure I can remember weather like this during Christmas. Jack
After the wolf this morning we finished up the day checking a few traps. We got 2 more marten and a wolverine.
After dinner we decided to go to our local hockey rink and watch a game. The Smithers Steelheads won 12-2. James is part owner of the Seattle Thunderbirds and he thought is would be fun to take in the game here. Made a good ending to a great day.
Wow trip of a lifetime and he just got there!!!! Still has the rest of the week to go!!!
these pictures makes me want to be back up there!
That Wolverine is so cool. I would love to have one of those in my archery room.
Today was a little slow, we got 2 marten and a coyote. Some of our snare locks are starting to freeze up on us with the rain the last few days. Today we spent some of the day fixing frozen snares. We had one lynx and one wolf go into the snares but the snares were frozen and they didn't get hung up. We have 3 baits that are getting hit hard by wolves right now.
Here's a mink that we got yesterday in a trap that Jack put out to try to catch a otter.
Babine, On a critter like wolves, coyotes, lynx etc, how many do you find alive in the snares and how do you dispatch them? I don't know if it's head shots, or through the heart/lungs with a small caliber rifle/pistol. Just don't know and figured I'd ask the experts. Thanks, I always enjoy these threads and the time and skill needed to be successful.
This is one of my favorite threads of the year. The wolf is awesome! Good luck
INbowdude: so far this year everything in the snares have been dead when we've gotten to them. It seem to be about 20% in the past that we have had to dispatch. We shoot them in the lungs. We keep the skulls so that's the biggest reason for not shooting them in the head.
Last night we spent the night at one of the outpost cabins to try to shoot another wolf over the bait. No wolves came in but there had been lots of action on that bait in the last week.
View from the cabin
Goat Guide,
Love that black wolf. Would love to get one of those for my house someday. That color is awesome! Congrats.
A marten caught on the way to the cabin
James flew out last night. The weather created lots of challenges this trip right to end. His flight was delayed by 2 1/2 hours. During the trip we had a lot of rain followed by freezing temperatures freezing up the locks on most of the snares. We had 2 wolves, 2 lynx and a fox that got away on us due to the snare locks being frozen on us. All and all it turned out to be a great trip, with the high light being James shooting one of the biggest wolves that we've taken in the last couple years. James's flight wasn't till the evening so on the way to the airport we pulled the legholds and checked a few other sets. We one a marten, a coyote in a leghold and a coyote in a snare. Back by popular demand is going to be more game camera pictures. We got 2 camera's out right now.
Incredible black wolf! Wow!
mb 750 should be big enough for a coyote.. lol
great pics~
Love the thread Jack, a crazy season for weather.
I'm just asking for now but what do y'all charge I would love to trap wolves. I trap here I'm texas hobby now but trapped for the government for a few years is rather trap then anything. So just curious how much to come up as a client
Here's a few pictures from the trail cam yesterday.
Grey wolf
Love to catch a black wolf someday. MB 750's are awesome!! Here is a pic of a MN wolf I caught last week in one.
Wow! Those MB 750's must REALLY be something to hold on a rear foot catch like that. Really impressive. Could be the snow level helped in that the wolf couldn't get good traction? I always prefer to catch my coons in the water because they just can't fight the trap when they're loaded with water and the footing is slippery.
Beautiful Minnesota wolf. There needs to be a lot fewer of those from what my friends up north around Grand Rapids tell me.
Shadow Man
Stan and Michelle arrived today at about noon today so we went out and checked a few sets close to the Lodge. Here`s the first animal of the trip. A marten.
We also got 3 wolves in one of the snare staition
wow you have a lot of wolves out there to get three in one day. What will day two hold?
Love the color on that bottom wolf!!!
Yesterday was another great day. We got 3 marten, 3 weasels, 2 wolves, a lynx and a coyote. We had a lot of snow this last week and we had to reset all snares and lift them higher. We have one of our baits that a wolverine is hitting hard so we set out a few sets for it yesterday too.
How many square miles do you trap?
Can't wait for the next report!
Thanks for sharing.
Well done! Keep them coming!
Mark
IdyllwildArcher: we trap little sections of about 2000 square miles, with big sections that between lines that aren't trapped.
Today we got 1 lynx and 7 marten. It started to rain again today it getting warm. It's suppose to get cold again in a couple days.
We just went out for a quick morning trip to check a few wolf snares and set out more. We ended up getting one wolf and a marten. We also got a otter in a set out in front of the lodge. Today had a short day so that we could get ready for a big New Years party out here at the lake.
Govtrapper sorry I missed your question, a trapping trip is $6000 plus permit cost, and taxes. You get 1 of everything you catch and 2 wolves. If you catch extra and want to take it home then there is a trophy fee. We just watched a second otter go into the trap off the dock!!!!! Jack
This a great post ! Look for it every year .Thanks
Jack, Are your folks taking the raw hides or trading them out for finished pelts? Any problems crossing the boarders with raw pelts?
Thanks, Mike
INbowdude, the clients can't take the hides and skulls home with them because it takes too long for the permits to come in before their trapping trip is finished. We just take the hides down to the border to clear customs and ship them to the addresses given to us from the clients usually in March or April.
Things have been busy with some nice animals being caught the last few days. Here are the two otters we caught off of the dock a couple of days ago. We will have an update from the last couple of days soon.
Jack
What a great thread to follow!
2016 Jack, right around the corner ;)
Yesterday afternoon Stan and Michelle left for home. In the morning checked a few sets close to the lodge. We got 2 wolves, 2 marten and a beaver. We got 8 wolves on the trip.
A 3 lynx day, we got 5 lynx on the trip
The beaver we caught on the last day
Looks like they had an awesome trip! Thanks for all the pics.
So Cool. Would love to do this, whats a trip cost?
Brian, the cost of this trip has already been posted on this thread somewhere up above!!
The couple above booked a 2on1 trip and those are $5000 each and each person gets one of everything they catch and 2 wolves if they are caught or shot during the trip. Trips are 6 FULL days with you arriving the day before the trip and leaving the day after. Me and Crystal are flying to the Dallas Safari Club Show tomorrow where keep will be picking us up and putting us up for the night(thanks). Hope we see some of you guys there. This is the snare setup we used under the ice to catch that beaver. Jack
Love this thread every year. Good luck Mark hope travel goes well and you are fortunate to hold the elusive Gulo.
The last couple days I collected about 8000 pounds of butcher scraps and road kill for the next trip. Conrad arrives tomorrow and if he gets here early enough in the day then we'll go check a few sets.
Conrad arrived around 1 this afternoon so we run out and checked a few sets. There was sign of about 6 wolves around one of the wolf stations but they never made it into the snares. We did have a coyote hooked up though and got a marten.
Do you ever have problems with wolves destroying coyotes which have been trapped? (Before you get the site re-checked)
ZBarebow: I don't think we've even had wolves damage any of the animals in the traps. Most of the damaged trapped animals have been from birds. Today we caught a lynx that a coyote ate the back 2/3's of it. We hope that I can still save a cape for a shoulder mount. We sometimes get lynx that eat other trapped lynx and sometimes you can get a wolverine that eat other animals out of the traps. Today we got a nice fox, that lynx, 3 weasels and 3 marten. We got the fox in a 330 that was set for wolverine.
I bet that was lights out for that fox! Love this thread.
Love the marten trapping, any fisher in the area.
TSI: there are a few fishers in the area. We normally only get 1 or 2 a year. Last night we went to one of the camps to see if we could get a shot at a wolf but none showed up on the bait. We did get a lynx in a snare on the way there though and a coyote on the way out. Today we collected bait and got about 5000lbs of scraps, guts and road kill. Tomorrow we're going to spend another night at a outpost cabin to see if we can get a wolf.
Great job guys and a novel way to keep the operation going all winter, cant do it here non res cant trap here.
Lots of Fisher here but the lynx are protected, seems to be quite a few around though,we can trap bobcat.Heres an east coast haul of marten, fisher and cats.
We only get 12 days to trap fisher and marten, more or less its a 24hr a day dash for the cash.
We spent last night out at one of the other camps. No wolves came in but there was lots of fresh sign. We checked traps on the way into the cabin yesterday and on the way back to the lodge. We picked up 2 lynx, 1 wolverine, 4 marten and a weasel. Here's the first lynx
Today we invited the CO's along for a ride along with us on the trap line, so they could see what was involved with these trips. Here's a wolverine that we caught while they were with us.
BG- The only one not having fun in the last pic is the wolverine! LOL!
Great photos! It is certainly enjoyable reading about and seeing your critters.
this is so cool. what animals do the guys get to keep?
This weasel has been hanging out at in our bait pile in the parking lot all winter. He decided to come inside when the door was open today. I don't want to trap him but if he comes in again I'll have to.
Do you guys eat your Lynx and Bobcats?
Just found this thread today. I usually don't check the big game board but I will now.
I just took interest in trapping and took my class last weekend. We have lots of raccoon here so that is what I will be concentrating on.
I hope I can take this tip one day and trap with you guys.
Keep up the updates. You got me hooked now.
killinstuff: if we catch a lynx that's freshly caught then we'll eat it. Everyone who's tried it so far has liked it.
If you covered this already, I apologize.
Do you do any predator calling for the wolves/coyotes/lynx, etc., or do you just hunt them over the baits?
Love following this thread!
We finally got the trip started ........we were supposed to land in Smithers last night on the final leg of the trip. We would see the runway ahead when the flight deck said too much ice, so we returned to Vancouver. After a restless night we took off again at 7:30 this morning. The captain said we had a 50/50 chance of landing because of the fog, but we made it in OK.
Lloyd picked us up at 9:30 this morning and we checked traps on the way to the cabin.
It was a good start, we picked up 2 lynx on the way in.
Lloyd is busy skinning, so I told him I would post a few pics.
When we were in town, we hooked up the trailer which had a roadkill moose and assorted other meat, and brought it to the lodge. After a quick lunch, we transferred bait to the snowmobiles and headed out to check more traps.
The second bait had a nice wolf..........I think Lloyd has this figured out!
The last bait had double marten catch.
The total for the day was 2 lynx, 1 wolf, 1 coyote, 4 marten,, and a weasel.
We are going to have waaaaayyyy too much fun this week!
Im just curious- is there no limit on game in British Columbia ?? It seems an incredible amount of animals can be harvested.
The original thread a few years ago did the same for my son and I. In the beginning we had so much fun it was actually cutting into our bowhunting time a bit. I think we have it pretty well figured out now though and love doing both.
I will say I trapped about a week less this year though as my son moved on to college. I still loved running the trapline but I did miss spending the extra time Wyatt. He did make it back a couple weekends and we made the best of it!
Thanks for putting in all the extra time to share this with us!
Mark, looks like you are having a blast. Keep the pictures coming..
We hunt NWO ontario....It is a Beaver trappers paradise....they are everywhere
Lots of Martin trappers but not many Wolves or Beaver
Wolves too
Today was a little slower, got another lynx and 4 more marten. We spent some of our day setting out legholds.
Is it just me or is the lynx count high this year? Love the thread guys.
what animals do the guys get to keep?
The lynx numbers are high this year. We had seen more lynx then normal while we were moose and bear hunting earlier this year. The guys get to keep one of every species and 2 wolves each that are caught or shot on the trip. If they want more then they more then there is a trophy fee for extra's.
Lloyd is busy skinning again, he will post more details later tonight.
Yesterday morning first thing we checked a bait site on the lake near the lodge for wolf/coyote........no luck.
After breakfast we loaded the truck/trailer with supplies and bait and headed to one of the outpost cabins, checking traps on the way in. The snowmobile portion of the trip was about 19km, a beautiful ride.
After a comfortable night in the cabin we awoke to see nine wolves on the ice headed to the bait pile..........
Lloyd will fill in the details, but here is a pic of the take from yesterday and today.
Awesome take Mark, been checking often for updates. I am green with envy as you know. Keep getting them.
Here's one of the lynx. It has 4 white feet
Gary's wolf that he shot from one of the cabins at the outpost camp. About a 275 yard shot.
I love the thread too even though I am not a trapper. That lynx with white feet is really cool.
4 marten, 1 mink, a weasel and a squirrel
Can you say, " Mustelidae"? Great weasel family catch!
The guys stayed at one of the cabins last night with Shawn(one of our guides) to try to get another shot at a wolf. I went with them and checked some traps on the way there. We got a coyote and a weasel. I had a meeting in the morning so I left them there with Shawn, no wolves came into the bait for them. I met with them after the meeting and we checked another wolf station. We got 2 wolves and 2 foxes at that one today.
Looks like your having a great season! Thanks for sharing.
Great thread once again. I have caught hundreds of lynx with dogs and never seen one with white feet!Awesome.
What time of year do you guys pack it in?
The guys have left and gotten out on the plane. The last day went pretty good getting 2 more wolves and a couple more marten. The James and his wife show up on Monday to start his trip. The success on the wolves should continue on the next trip. The last day there was still quite a bit of sign around.
Here's the second wolf of the last day. We have 2 more trips to go but will keep the wolf snares out till the end of March.
Hi Pat. So far this year in the 4 trips we've trapped 16 and shot 2. Last year our total wolf count with shot and trapped was 37. I pick up another guy today and we'll start tomorrow. I'm setting up another snare station on a farm where there has been wolf problems. Hopefully that one will produce this year too. Last fall he had a few of his livestock killed by wolves.
James arrived last night and today we started checking a few sets. Today was the coldest day that we've had so far this year. -22F We got 2 weasels, a lynx and a coyote. Tomorrow we're going to check some sets in the morning and then spend the night at one of the cabins to try to shoot a wolf. I checked the new snare station on the farm that I put out before I picked up James at the airport and got 2 coyotes at it. There was already wolves hitting that bait too.
On the way to the cabin we got a lynx and a weasel. No wolves came in to the bait this morning but there was fresh tracks from the last couple days. This afternoon we checked another wolf station got a wolf there, and we got another lynx in another set.
Watch out for frost bite!
Wait, wolves kill livestock?
Lloyd, what is the lynx count this year? Last year? Wolves may be down a bit but it sounds like the lynx are way up.
I think the lynx count is up to 17. We'll probably end up with around 20. We'll pull all lynx sets next week. I think we'll end up getting close to the same number wolves as last year. We have about 6 less then last year at this time but it seems like a couple new packs are starting to move in now that the lakes are frozen.
Yesterday we had a wolf at 336 yards from the cabin. We thought it was going to come closer for a better shot but it just turned and walked away. We ended up getting a real pretty fox that day though.
Mark, Kent and Gary. Here's the view from the lookout that we went up to on a clear day.
Thanks for the view Lloyd! That is incredible.
We didn't get the view, but we did not get the -20 either, so I won't be complaining too much.
We picked up a new client yesterday from Germany and woke up to a big dump of fresh snow and a wolf standing right in front of the lodge that caught us of guard. These are his tracks crossing the docks. Jack
Have there only been 2 wolverines caught this year? Lynx numbers seem very good but haven't noticed many wolverines. Just curious.
Thanks again for giving us Bowsiters an extended "trapping season". Awesome thread as always!
Jeff
Pat I agree. You don't need a cannon just a flat shooting gun and that should be a gimme with a good rest. Shots look to be in open.
Too bad!
This year we have only got 2 wolverines. Not sure why they haven't been around this year. Might have something to do with the mild winter. Yesterday Paul missed a wolf out in front of the lodge at 170 yards out in front of the lodge. We were caught off guard and didn't get a good rest to make the shot. This morning he redeemed himself shooting this black wolf at 200yards out at one of the outpost camps. It was the same wolf that didn't give us a shot last hunt.
The last few days were spent pulling all the lynx, marten and wolverine sets. Yesterday we got 2 lynx and one of them was in the last set of the year. This one is a big tom with 4 white feet. Second one of the year like that.
Here's a big black wolf that we got in a snare this morning.
We just had someone move their hunt that they had booked for next January so we now have an opening for Jan. 21-26, 2015. We still also have a opening for Feb. 15-22, 2015.
What a TOAD of a wolf!!!!
Yesterday was a new species day for Paul with these 2 different color phases of fox.
View from the lodge this morning before going for a snowmobile ride to check wolf snares.
Then we caught a coyote and this awesome!!!! wolf
Here is the skin from that wolf, it will make a great lifesize mount with his big black one from earlier.
Those are some beautiful wolves for sure. Did you get a weight on them?
Can you use the wolf carcasses to bait other wolves?
We don't weigh the wolves. People always think they're heavier then they real are. Probably the biggest wolf we got this year was around 125 pounds. A big mature male will weigh around 115 and big mature female would be about 95 pounds. About the only thing that will normally eat a wolf carcass is crows, marten and wolverine.
Googly moogly, that's big pelt! Love this thread and never want it to end. Find it interesting to see trapping threads are some of the most popular threads on these hunting boards. Would love to set a few myself.
Interesting about the weights! I guess I would be in the category of overestimating the weights on the wolves!
White feet on the lynx are way cool.
What would you say is the most unusual animal that you have taken & why?
We have gotten wolves up to 150 pounds before but that pretty rare. Any animals that are unusual are because of colour. (white feet, marten that are orange, stuff like that.)
Today was a good day with 2 coyotes and 3 nice wolves. I was in town yesterday and my dad called me saying that the wolves were howling all night and thought something was in the snares close to the lodge and boy was he right. Looked like 6 or 7 wolves went into the snare station and 3 got caught, plus the 2 coyotes. I picked up more bait yesterday and we plan to trap wolves until the last week of March. Jack
Masen and I checked the farm snare stations today. We got a coyote at the first farm and a wolf at the second one.
Do the snares typically get them around the neck? Are they usually dead when you find them or do you have to dispatch them. I am fascinated by this.
Got another big Grey wolf today.
what size wire do you use on your snares.
we use 3/32 7x7 wire for wolf and 1/16 7x7 for lynx. The 1/16 will work for coyote but is a little light for wolf. Here's another wolf that we got yesterday.
What's your total catch so far for the year? Thanks for posting.
we are currently at 28 wolves with the ones the have been shot. 25 of them have been trapped. Every year our goal is to get at least 30. Today I got 2 more coyotes
My son Grant 14 and my daughter Robin 13 just finished the trappers course and are now certified trappers of British Columbia. Jack
Congrats! The family tradition continues. Great!
Holy cow Grant looks big! What are you feeding that boy? Congrats to them both.
This week I'm going to pull all the rest of the wolf snares. I pulled one station today and got one wolf. The hair on it still real good. This weekend Jack's going to be at the Bighorn Show in Spokane Washington.
Congrats to Robin and Grant. Look forward to seeing them both again in October.
This morning I shot a wolf out of my bedroom window. Here's a picture of my blind
Hopefully you didn't get cold when you opened the window for the shot. Did you have a cup of coffee while sitting in the blind. LOL
The hair is still real good for the end of March. I'm going to going pull a couple more wolf stations today. The boys and I are going to going cut firewood for one of the outpost camps today too.
Can you arrange a similar type shot for me out of my cabin come October? Of course, the wolf can't be out on the lake, but it could be walking down the road or something...awesome...
opps...I forgot...I already got my "easy" wolf the last trip! Anyway, is it too much to ask to get a second "easy" wolf????
Hey, can you possibly post a pic or two for the next week? I just got out of surgery that was required after a bad "shed hunting trip". Checking traps with you would sure make my week sitting on my rear go faster! LOL.
I am just kidding about the pics but unfortunately the "trip" did result in a plate and 8 screws in my ankle.
Thanks again for the great thread this year, Jeff
Do you know if it is possible to make a coat out of the critters you trap? If so, any idea how much it costs? I realize you can spend a ton on some namebrand fur, but it would feel great to wear your own animals. Seems like a decent spinoff commercial business.
That wolf looks like he has a question! :o)
I thnk his questions was "why me?"
I thought the wolf was just being polite!
It's amazing that you can pull 30 wolves out of one area year after year...
Do you guys think you're actually denting the surrounding area and doing anything for the deer/moose in the area, or are there just that many that it doesn't matter?
williamtell: it is possible to make a coat out of the animals that are trapped. I think it would still cost quite a bit to have one made, even if you used your own furs. bigbuck: I was using a 300 win. mag. It's the same rifle that we lend out to the clients who don't bring their own rifle. Today I pulled the last of the snares that were out and got 3 more coyotes.
Some people keep guns by their bed in case of wolves.
The rest of us keep guns by our beds in case of people.
Here's a bunch of skulls that are all ready for shipping with the hides to those who came up this winter. I'm just waiting for the export permits.
Looks good! I am eager to have my wife see the hides and help me decide what to do with each one.
Awesome! As normal, my favorite thread of the winter!

My wife surprised me with this slide show of some highlights from our 2013 season. Thought I would share it with you guys. My son picked out the song. Jack
You guys need your own TV show.
This thread is awesome. No wonder its several years old and still trucking along.
Thanks for all the great pictures.
