Kodiak Mtn Goat, March 2014
Mountain Goat

Just returned from a March Goat hunt. Fun thing to do this time of year. We killed two goats.
Had a bit of a problem with borrowed gear because we couldn't get into the shed where my gear was stored. The tent we borrowed from the flight service turned out to be a Gazebo not designed for Kodiak winds.
We survived long enough to each kill a Mtn Goat and enjoy some of Roy's fried Peanut M&M's.
Our craft, made us feel kind of small outside of the bay when the wind came up and we were in 4 foot swells.
We killed both goats on this mountain.
Roy thought where I came down was too steep so he came down here.
For those reading and interested in the POW Sitka hunt, this Mtn Goat hunt was a piece of cake compared to a POW alpine deer hunt.
We saw many deer and, believe it or not, we saw 6 bear out this early. Roy had to chase a bear off his goat. Roy always seems to attract bears.
Could be the hat....Great goat Bob, congrats!
Nice!
Congrats
Good luck, Robb
Awesome hunt ! Congrats on a fine goat.
Great trophy pic! The hair looks beautiful on that goat. Congrats to you and Roy.
Pretty cool way to welcome spring!! Nice goats.
That's awesome Bob! I'd say them bears are lookin for love when they chase after Roy! With that hat he looks like one of em! Hopefully it's the sows that are chasing him....congrats! Mike
Awesome Bob. Looks like a rugged hunt. Not a lot of snow down there.
Nicely done! Great pictures!
Looks an interesting hunt. Congrat to both of you.
Amazing. Kodiak goat population must be at an all time high I'm assuming? Pretty awesome they expanded the bag limit to two goats, and now even extended the season into March...
Like clockwork when you hit the hillsides Bob.
Another amazing trophy Bob, congrats!
Nice work Bob. You make it look easy.
What a refreshing story. Congrats. Ed F
That goat looks awesome! Congratulations!
Bob, Great story and Goat. Well done!!!
Scott Alberda
Nice job Bob and awesome goat. Can't get better hair than that. Not sure if it's St. Patrick's Day approaching or envy cause I'm turning a little green. Congrats to you and Roy!!
What a gorgeous goat and great photo Bob! We need more pics! Congrats!
Thanks
We saw plenty of goats but this particular place is pretty accessible from the water so it gets hunted a lot from boats. We only saw 3 billy's. I killed one, one had a broken horn, and the other got away. Roy killed a young nanny without a kid.
I'll try and fetch a photo of Roy's goat to post. He recovered it by himself so I didn't get a photo.
Congrats Bob, great looking goat!
Sweet .... you put the tape on that bad boy yet ?
Congrats! Looks like great hair on that goat.
Geez Bob. You're gonna have to add another wall in the home for dead animals....
Great job! Pretty amazing to just up and do a mt goat hunt and make it look like you just jumped off the couch and said "hey, I'm bored, lets go kill a mt goat...."
Did you bed em and stalk or see where they were headed and cut em off? Get close and wait for them to mess up? Story? I mean, I want the recipe for fried m&ms and all too, but... =D
That looks like an awesome trip! Congrats on the goats!
We had hunted across the bay for a couple of days without any luck on seeing a billy. This day we saw several goats from the water on the other side of the bay and decided to hike up to them. On the way up, Roy could tell there was at least one billy.
Roy hunted around the bottom of them and I went above. Once I got to the top, I couldn't locate the two we had seen up there. I saw Roy closing in on a group of about 12 well below me. Trying to locate the billy, I looked away for a few minutes. When I looked back, I saw something had happened and figured Roy had shot one. All the goats headed my way, but for the most part well below me and out of range.
Once they got closer, I saw there was no billy in the group. Roy signaled me to watch for and cut off the one he had hit. I didn't see the goat get by me, but, in the snow, I could see a bed with blood in it past my location. I wandered over there and saw his goat bedded way below. Roy was on the track and by the time he got there the goat had expired and rolled farther down the mountain.
We were a long, long way from the boat, so Roy yelled up for me to head back to and bring the boat around to the drainage his goat was in. He would process the goat and meet me at the beach. Sounded like a good plan, but on the way back I looked for the billy. I saw him on a rock outcrop about 100 yards below me. I stalked down some very steep rocky stuff to within 43 yards on my non-angle compensated, binocular rangefinder, It was very steep so I shot for 30 yards; should have shot for 35 yards.
My shot hit him in the liver angling forward, but it was low, so it came out the bottom without getting lung. The goat only went about 40 yards and bedded in sight. I watched him for an hour and a half during which time he got up and moved a few yards three times. It didn't seem he wanted to go anywhere. Two kids walked by him and he didn't get up, so I figured I could close the distance.
I got to within 30 yards and he stood and walked directly away from me. I shot him up the kazoo while he was walking away. Only thing was, I now had no more arrows. I had lost all but two on the climb up through the alders earlier in the day.
It was getting late in the day and I knew Roy would be wondering where I was. I stalked into about 15 yards on the goat, but he was still alive and I had no more arrows. As a result, I left him for the day and went to pickup Roy. On the way into the beach pickup spot, I saw Roy at the top of the cliffs headed back toward where the boat had been parked. Luckily, he also saw me and turned around and packed his goat back to the beach one tired out bowhunter.
The net morning we hiked back up the mountain and my billy was right where I had left him with my ice ax stuck in the ground 15 yards above him. He’s not all that big or old, but, one thing about Kodiak goats, is they grow fast the first three years. I think he’s a three year old that is around 9 inches long. I have not actually measured him yet. I did take a life-size cape and they have beautiful hair this time of year.
Congrats to you both! Nicely done...great story o lot!
Mark
Is that a resident only hunt Bob?
Very nice! Congrats to you both!
Man's that's awesome! Great billys.
Great hunt! Thanks for posting
Great story. Sounds like a great adventure!
Non-residents can do this hunt too, but you have to go with a guide. The guy who has the area where we were is Gus Lamoreaux. There are others in Unit 480 including the Munsey Brothers.
Very nice Bob! Thanks for sharing! Beautiful goat!
My dream hunt. Beautiful picture Blacktail Bob....congrats
I think Louis the "City Hunter" and Lee the HuntnFool are going next fall. My understanding is that they will be going to another area that is probably better than where Roy and I were. They had to draw their tags, ours were basically over the counter (registration). They will be hunting with Roy though.
Nice goat Bob. Congrats. October can't get here soon enough.
Nice Job Bob and Roy, Congrats..!!!
Mountain goat in March. How cool is that!
Congrats Bob!
Awesome job and thanks for the story!
There's less snow there than here...8^) I take I this is on Kodiak?
Congrats, beautiful animal....
way to go on the double goat kill !! finally after 4 years I drew a goat tag on my third choice :> thanks Bob
looks like a mild winter for them deer !!!
Great story, great pics. Congratulations.
"Is it October yet?"
I'm with you, Nick. I leave at the end of August for BC. Physical prep is going well. Still need to pick up some gear.
Lwood I'm in the same boat as you, headed to BC aug 20th . This thread isn't making the wait any easier lol
Very nice, grats to both of you
Cajun-who are you hunting with?
Lwood I'm hunting with babine outfitters and have spoken with quite a few bowsiters who all speak highly of them . Needless to say I'm very excited !
Awesome! You two guys are "predators." Lucky Im jealous!!
awesome animals and congrats!!!
Great job Bob. You are in a class of your own. Awesome in all regards. Thanks for sharing.
Incredible and well done, thanks for sharing.
Great job..Im jealous thats for sure. Always been a dream from my childhood to hunt a Mt Goat. Ive got 10 points for Utah Goat. I hunted Prince Willam sound, Cordova. Could have killed one with my hunting partners rifle at 100 yards but thought I could get it done with my bow. I planned to go the next year and they implemented needing a guide. Just couldn't afford it after that. Super cool hunt Blacktail,
Awesome hunt Bob. You've got to give us that M&M recipe too.
Beautiful goats. This is one on my bucket list.
Good Luck Nick...If the two yahoos above can get it done, I know you can. :)
