However, my reading tonight says that "To clarify a common misconception: You do NOT need WIFI or Cellular connection for the GPS chip to work; however you do need to have pre-downloaded the map content in order to have your current location show up on a map."
However, The free version of Trimble OUtdoor Navigator does not let you download maps for offline use. See adventurealan.com. They recommend Gaia GPS, a $20 app that let's you download a large range of free maps and satellite imagery world wide, for NO additional charge.
I am looking into this app. If anyone has used it please share your review, & comments. It appears that you could get topos and imagery virtually anywhere without paying any more than the first $20.
It works fine if you DL the area's maps before you go there.
I have entire GMUs DL'd and have been out there with no service for days with no problem.

Turn off the GPS for the camera. If you do not, when you text somebody a pic from your honey hole, such as a big fresh rub, they will know exactly where the pic was taken.
Loading KMZ files is not supported.
Loading GPX files (waypoint/tracks) from another devise requires creating a trip on the Trimble web site then synching the devise.
Elite offline doesn't work??
"Finally they said that the offline Elite map program does not work with the current iPad operating system. QUOTE: “The engineers are still working on a fix. It appears to be an issue specific with iOS 7.1? "

If he chooses places, there will be a red stick pin on a map EXACTLY in your honey hole.
