This was kind of a tough hunt for a different reason- the area was only legal for two points, spikes, and does. This is a management technique our fish and game department is using to develop a trophy area. There are a very few tags awarded by lottery to lucky hunters who can take big boys. I'd always scoffed at the reasoning behind that strategy, because all I'd ever seen in prior years was 2 points, but this year something was different. We saw tons of deer every weekend we went out, but they were all huge 4 points or better.
Finding a legal deer was next to impossible. The week before Calista took this doe, she filmed and then stalked into range of some deer. She got on a legal two-point... Her 45 yard shot was dead on, but the deer she targeted jumped at the sound of her little bow, and by the time her arrow traveled the 45 yards to where the deer had been standing, he was long gone.
As we climbed up the hill to retrieve her arrow, three more of the deer stepped out in front of her. Two of them were legal, and only at 30 yards! But between her and them - at 25 yards -was this gorgeous four-point. I told her not to even draw while he was in the way, and of course they all buggered before he cleared out of the shot window. This is a still from the video she shot before her stalk. This had to be really frustrating for her, but we both really enjoyed being that close to all those deer.

We had a really fun time checking out all the animals from up high, and my daughter really seemed in her element. Funny how she can be glassing mule deer in the morning, and then be dressed up all girly and headed for a dance the same evening.

For whatever reason, something changed this last weekend, and the deer situation had reversed. We saw a few big bucks, but we also were running into tons of does and a few forkies. She wanted a buck, but she said she'd take a doe if she got a chance. The first evening, the poor girl had multiple opportunities, but just couldn't connect, and she was getting really frustrated with herself. close shots she could make at the range were just not coming together for her. The next morning, this doe was hanging out on a hillside with another half-dozen does and spikes. My daughter crept closer until she had a 30 yard shot. The deer looked like it was about to bugger, but rather than take off, it turned broadside. That was all my daughter was waiting for, and she let the arrow go. the deer was spined and immediately went down. She put a couple finishers in to be sure, and then commenced her pent-up happy dance. Myself, I was way happier being along for the ride on this one than when I was killing my own deer this year. Good times!
