Whitetail Deer

Packing up for an early morning 6.5 hour drive west to stay with fellow member Matt Andersen. I plan on an early afternoon Tuesday hunt, then as much as I can stand (dare I say "all day sits") through Friday, in the land of the giants. 200 acres private hardwoods. Matt been showing me pics of some great bucks, and of course he scored early already and put another friend on a good 140 class 10pt. I am not placing any special limitations on my hunt, as for "inches" but I would certainly expect I won't release unless it's a class up from what I am accustomed to in NJ... My only concern is the weather - I have slowly become a big sissy over the cold as I age...
TUE - cloudy, high 20, low 11, winds W 17, gusts to 36
WED- some sun, high 33, low 22 winds S15 gusts to 30
THU -mostly cloudy and flurries, high 29, low 13 winds WSW 10 gusts to 18
FRI - clouds and sun, high 27, low 12, winds NW 7, gusts to 12
WOW - looks like I will have some VERY challenging temps and wind conditions... I don't have a HBS, but will do best I can... A goosedown vest and my Kamuk icefishing boots will be part of the standard apparel, as with a hand muffler with handwarmers and heavy fleece gloves..
Hope for bucks coming out of lockdown and big boys cruising all day, that will certainly help take my mind off how utterly freezing cold I will be!
I will give periodic updates but in those temps, phone will be in my pocket most of the hunt...
A little scared!
Jack
if I survive this, I may have to consider a ND hunt!
Good luck Jack, Just got back to Jersey Yesterday, Real slow the 4 days I was there. Thought the cold front would have them moving, but I think your right about being on lock down now. Only seen a few young bucks and no chasing at all. I feel for you, it's going to be miserable out. Maybe that will get them going again for you.
Good luck jack.....hope they are moving for ya.....makes the cold more bearable!
Jack, Don't defeat yourself before you begin. My brother swears by the HBS and I may have to get one one day. I am with you though the older I get the less I like the cold. Stick a big one. I will be following along everyday now that I am back to work.
You are damn lucky you aren't hunting today Jack. YUK!
Which way do you go? I have a Heater Suit you could borrow if you pass by me.
Good luck!!!!!!! No, I'm not jealous. ;-)
Route 80 all the way to CANTON... Then looks about 15 miles south of there, on the Tuscarawas river...
Will be snow on ground for sure, maybe I can keep my snowy buck streak going!
Good luck Jack!!! I will be following along.
Good luck Jack. Keep the good season going.
The temps really are not that bad, come on it's not like you are heading to northern Manitoba. A bit below freezing with winds of about 20MPH are normally survivable LOL
PS now if it was raining / sleeting that is a whole different issue.
Have a great time with Matt and good luck!!
Good luck... keep us updated.
Hooe your correct about the lockdown, its been slow in the Bucheye.
Too far north for me to hand it off to you. I'm near the airport in Beaver county. Nice day to not hunt eh Jack! Good luck. I'll be checking in to see how it's going.
Waiting on you Jack! As we spoke this morning, I am still seeing lots of buck sign. Fresh (huge) rubs and some scrapes. Less scrapes than a few weeks ago...It is currently snowing, heavy wet snow. Prob 3" now another 2" expected, then the COLD! The deer will be up and moving, hopefully Jack is in one of my stands when a bruiser comes by! Safe travels bud!
yes the snow will tell us the deer patterns and where the hot scrapes are for sure! THe downside is, 5 inches of wet snow and what 12 degree temps will do to that... CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH... I probably will be better off driving quad right to the stand! LOL
Can I assume that you will visit with your long, lost cousin 3 times removed Kelly Harris?
What is the humidity supposed to be?
Good luck Jack and look at the bright side, at least your arrow won't be stuck in that frozen ground quite so far.
Bucks should be cruising for you Jack. I filled my buck tag on 11/1 But I've been out filling some doe tags for the last couple of weeks. My buddies and I have noticed good movement early mornings and at midday. That's observation from 4 different counties so should be a decent average of movement. Good luck, shoot straight and stay warm!
Chip - too far to visit Cuz Kell.... Maybe I will get invited on one of his excellent adventures some day!
Mule Power, glad to see another Beaver County guy on here.
Just hit the road 3:20am - 426 miles due west to go. 33 degrees here in NJ. It's 16 in Dover Ohio winds gusting to 27 out of the WSW. OH JOY!!!! I don't hunt in NJ if it's below 20 unless there is no wind. what the heck am I doing???
Just part of the adventure Jack....enjoy!
Best of luck.
Rewards are better after overcoming a few obstacles Jack. Losing a few fingers and surviving hypothermia will make for a good story. It's freakin cold and windy out this morning!
Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel. Goin' to the treestand gonna have yourself a real... good time.
11 degrees here this morning with a -7 wind chill.
Oh well I nearly took a buck with my grand Cherokee 30 minutes into the trip this morning back in Jersey I am not sure if that is a good sign or not
As I already told Jack, I spotted a nice 110" 8 pt bedded/tending a bedded doe in the middle of a yard about a mile from my jobsite. The property he's hunting is adjacent to my jobsite. Also saw a lot of other deer running around. Trying to stay warm I presume! haha Bundle up Jack! See you in a few hours!
Good luck Jack! Matt, I hope that you have fun too. I'm looking forward to the updates.
As long as you don't make any errant left turns and drive several hundred miles without noticing you should be fine. I hear western Alabama is brutally cold this time of year. Good luck.
I'm bucked out and will be working this week, although I am working a half day today. I will prob sit another stand on the property. I don't want to booger up anything for Jack though...I sure do love shooting does though! Jack's latest update, 110 miles left but got pulled over. I think he is driving with his blow up doll in the passenger seat again! Think he calls her Sally! haha jk Jack!
I got a "break" he gave me 5mph over limit. Apparently I was going 83 in a 65. I told him the blue sign said "80" and thought I was close. No points but $145 fine. Damn!!!! Fueling up now my hands have frostbite already
Franzen, LMAO you beat me to it. Good luck Jack! Will be following from the office.
Good luck Jack!
I see that Doors reference Mule Power :)
orionsbrother's Link
Ha! I'll see your Doors, Joe and raise you a Robbie Robertson.
Good luck Jack. Have fun. Stay warm.
Well I am in a stand. 20 degrees and am quite warm so far. My view looking down this mini Mtn at the tuscarawas River. Lots of trax walking in.
Still pissed about the speeding ticket but thanked him for no points and shook his hand. It pays to be nice
Give'm hell Jack and show those bucks what the Jersey Boys are made of.
Good luck Jack. It is supposed to warm up a bit over the next couple of days
"A goosedown vest and my Kamuk icefishing boots will be part of the standard apparel, as with a hand muffler with handwarmers and heavy fleece gloves.. "
I hunted in Knox County, OH on Saturday and never needed gloves. I used the new "Hunter's Apron". Check it out here:
www.huntersapron.com
It also has a built-in hand muffler - really keeps me warm in cold weather!
Jim (staywarmguy), are you a sponsor here, or are you just hijacking this thread for your own benefit?
Good luck Jack. It's cold out there.
It's chilling off around here - only going to get to around 60 today. Was in short sleeves shroom hunting and looking for pig sign last weekend. Had to get in a dig in the otherwise unrelenting misery of commie Cali. I'd rather be hunting big bucks and heck with the temperature - knock one dead Jack!
It may be a cold hunt Jack, but brave the weather because it is some truly beautiful property! Plus, Matt has about 10 heaters waiting for you at his place to warm your toes when you finish! Enjoy!
Matt rattled in a120 class 8 that got down wind of him but he doe hunting anyway. I am on my 3rd snickers peanut butter square and thinking about a hot steak dinner later. Still keeping warm
Focus man focus!! Forget about the food and concentrate:) You can hit the Walpack Inn when you get home.
Ha! Walpack Inn was my favorite as a kid cuz of all the deer watching at dinner. Make it a trifecta Jack!
That 6 was out of his freakin mind just running with no purpose. If he were big he be dead
Just passed another wide young 6 that winded me then ran behind me and stopped at 10 yards. Swirling winds no good I'm this side hill. Matt has a doe down
Saw a bunch of deer on the way home about 2 hrs from where you're hunting.....the cold has them up!
Well for a bitter cold afternoon maybe topped 17 degrees and gusty we did alright. Matt rattled in the 8 and shot this doe. I passed up two six pointers. Hope for warmer temps and less wind rest of week. 12 degrees in morning. Time for a steak dinner!
Sounds like your off to a good start.
Do you ever rattle in does ?
matt saw the Buck and wanted to practice and it worked. I pretty sure it had no bearing on the doe later on
I was rattling in does! I saw Stan Potts do it once! ;) It helped keep me warm and why not!? It's fun!
And the steak dinner was awesome! Thanks Jack!
otcWill and Hunt Man you guys are everywhere I look! lol Not a bad thing. Checking out those Lowas Will.
JJJack, dddid you chchchange your last name to Frost yet?
Long walk over hill over dale deep in the property. Hope for a nice morning. Followed fresh yote trax most of way in
Good luck today, it looks like good weather.
Jack are you hunting private or state land ?
Just passed up a 110" 8pt. Followed 2 doe and two fawn had him at 20 yds. I was watching buck and a doe saw me move. End of that. . Actually grunted him back in after.
200 acre private. All woods steep ridges and ravines. Very rugged
Ahhh!! That BH looks familiar!! Love those VPA's Jack!! The have worked very well for me on elk and deer!!
Was just asking. Never knew you could rattle in does. Good luck. HUNT
9am had two doe come blasting past me. Saw the chaser. Another 110 class 8. Looked same but last I saw him he was way behind me this guy in front 75 yds.
Not sure how healthy this was for lunch but after being I 14 degree breezy weather all morning it sure hit the spot served piping hot. "Hamburger gravy" was the name. Over mashed taters!
Love that pic of early morning, bow and snow. Just awesome.
Jack, Something tells me that dinner won't look much different when it comes back out later!
Back on same stand by 1:30 pm. Best stand for south wind. I have a Baggie full of fresh venison jerky Matt just made to add on top of that slop I just ate which was quite good. . It's 33 degrees it feels like a heat wave. Rut still on need a big cruiser to come by.
The tru-fire caliper makes an excellent jerky holder! Next level thinking right there for sure.
How big he gotta be to catch an arrow Jack? Thanks for posting
Will- bigger than this guy I passed up this morn
Jack, what are you hoping/holding out for? Maybe get Matt to post upwind and do some rattlin for you.
Williamtell his one on Matt's cam will do just fine. Just saw a doe running full speed 250 yds aw aw an hour ago. Then had a young fawn browsing around me for 30 minutes best hour yet to come
Just had a 90" 8pt come from behind me and stop 10 yards on downwind side of tree. Is was as if someone punched him in the nose! I should smell like a deer all the jerky I ate.
Jack my mom has always made hamburger gravy and mashed potatoes. It is one of my all time favorites. Good luck!!!
glad to see u are out of NJ best of luck
What kind of broad head do you use?
Charlie......hahaha
Pretty sure he shoots rage!
;-)
Damn Cuz are you trying to keep the family traidition going here in Ohio?
Kill something!!!
Keep after em Jack... just make sure your release is not clogged up with jerky!!!
Tried a new spot this morning had 3 doe come by in range at 7:35 and saw another 200 yards behind them that looked Bucky but didnt follow. Slow till 10 and went for breakfast. Back in stand by 12:45 where I saw 3 8 pointers yesterday. There is a fresh rub 30 yds from stand tree is 6" wide all fresh shavings on top of new snow. I don't think the small 8s made this rub. Charlie my VPA BH is ready to kill!
27 degrees winds WSW 17 gusting to 28 according to weather. It feels like a heat wave
love that rub! let that VPA eat!!!!
Well wind shifted and now blowing right at the fresh rub. Also just got long distance winded by two doe that I saw. 120 yards beyond the rub this hunt could be fubar'd
Just put a nice thick 9 or 10 or down. Probably what made the rub. Story to follow
Awesome Jack, Congrats! Can't wait for pics.
Way to go Jack!! Can't wait for the photo shoot.
Sweet man! Great buck! You got the killer eyes this year....
(I was checking this thread in my stand last night right before I whacked my buck!)
Congrats!
good thing you kilt him, he woulda kicked your butt! looks like a tough deer!!! Congratulations!!!
Congrats Jack! Your snowy buck streak continues! Looked like a fun hunt!
Mark
nice going jack keep going west !!!!!!!
Looks like that VPA made a nice trail of red to follow in the white snow. Congrats Jack! Heck of a fall your having so far.
Nice! Great season for ya, thanks for posting
Well I was cursing myself for over hunting that stand and getting winded and second guessing myself. He surprised me from behind I had zero time to react it was get bow off hook release on d-loop all I had was side view at 8 yards and quick decision "shooter" and shot him walking. Watched him trot away and he stood by his fresh rub and teetered and did the death run down a steep ravine. Tried to move him he has to be over 200 undressed I had to wait for Matt and the quad. Could not budge him too steep
That is a nice heave deer!
Very nice. congrats. HUNT
Thanks for coming out Jack! I have had fun guiding 4 successful hunters this year! Unfortunately one buddy gut shot a nice buck and didn't recover it but Jack, my girlfriend and my buddy Jeremy all shot and recovered their bucks! Jack sat it out in the brutally cold, snow and ice and made it happen!
My girl the Pittsburgh Huntress!
Here is Jeremy with his 9, same spot less snow...lol sorry don't mean to hijack Jacks thread but I'm pretty proud of myself! It feels good to put others on nice bucks and my girl on her first!!! Not to mention Jack and I both have had incredible hunting seasons!
Thanks for having me Matt I was starting to lose hope and with 10 degrees in morning was already thinking about my next and last day game plan. You did a great job placing 3 ladder stands for me and showing me around the most critical was having your quad. No way I could have walked over a mile that bundled up! I love Ohio!
Congratulations. Nice buck. Its not easy to stay out in the cold!
great job Jack. what a brute.
Yeah Buddy! That is a great buck.
What a horse! Nice, congratulations.
Way to go Jack, Way to get it done in the cold. Congrat's to you both.
Congrats...great buck! Way to stick with it!
Waite, did you say Jack was your girlfriend?
Nice Job guys!! Congrats.
Great buck Jack! Well done Matt, you're quite the guide. Its good to see Jeremy's buck, he called in my Moose for me last October, he's a hell of a hunter, guide and a great guy.
Thanks everyone. I did put my time in for sure in 3 days in really brutal conditions (for me) but I had a great time passed up 2 six points first hunt then an 8 next hunt then a diff 8 next hunt then 3 nice doe this morn and saw a buck In distance. Also saw several othe other doe and a few other bucks. Just a great experience in beuatiful rugged cold snowy country. I am amazed how big they can grow out here and can't thank 'Matt enough for being a great host and guide! And by the way his venison jerky was awesome and I am gonna smuggle as much as I can back to Jersey!!!!
Rick M for a trip back here next year I could be! Lol. ( in warmer conditions that is). I am gonna have this chill in me till May from this hunt!
It is a little rough for this time of year for sure! Nice buck and glad you had a good trip to the Buckeye state!
I am going to do my best to get to Nj. to see Pete this year. Can't believe I just typed that:)
Well done guys.
Not bad, not bad at all!!! Congrats.
It was a pleasure to have you Jack! Glad I saw this so I can go hide my jerky stash! ;)
Congrats on an awesome buck!!!!!!
Congratulations Jack!!!... and Matt!
Congrats Jack and the other hunters too.
What a way to end the trip!!! Scrambled eggs & fresh tenderloin from Matt's doe with garlic hot sauce!!! Mmmmm mmm good! Thanks again Matt for an awesome 3 day hunting trip you have "pro-guide" in your blood.
Jack...Wow! Great buck, some year your having! Congrats!!
Matt...All I can say is you did good! Congrats to you as well!!
i knew you guys would do it!
You are very welcome! See you in a week!
Congrats Jack, that is another nice buck!
Fun following along, congrats!
boy oh boy, did you folks do good!!!! Congrats to all of you! some really nice deer.
Nice going fellas. Congrats on the buck.
I also enjoyed this thread - from the speeding ticket to the 10 point. Congratulations!
Update - dressed weight was 155 on my butcher's scale.. Seems that was about my average this year, the 10/30 9pt was 159, The 11/14 8pt was 150, and the 11/20 Ohio 10pt, 155...
Congrats Jack on a great buck and great year.
