We are busy collecting bait and prebaiting wolf stations for the first client that starts Dec13. We had a couple moose hunters who tagged out early and had some fun with the trapline. We trapped these beaver for the fur and bait to hopefully catch a lynx. We will try to keep everyone updated as the season progresses.

What would those guys weigh!!??

I went on a moose hunt in Alaska this fall, & my guide traps lynx in the winter. He said the lynx/snowshoe hare cycle is on the upswing. Is there a specific number of years they cycle before they crash, & where are you guys in the cycle right now?

Also, like BOWNBIRDHNTR & Machias X2!!

Not sure how many years there are between cycles but the lynx population in an area is dependant on the snowshoe hare population, and we have been seeing lots of both during the fall season. We used the beavers for lynx bait and caught this awesome lynx on the last day of Jeremy's moose hunt and now it will be lifesized and going back to WA. We ate some of the lynx and will be using the rest for lynx bait during the first trip in Dec. We did weigh the beavers above with a luggage scale, 46 and 55 pounds.

This fall we were lucky to have "The Outfitters Built by Ford F-Series" on the Sportsman Channel book a meat moose hunt with us last minute. We did all of the filming in 5 days and our episode will be airing this Thursday, November 20th at 9:00pm Eastern. It's called "BC Bucket List"

We don't get this channel in Canada and will not be able to view the whole episode until after their 2014 season has finished airing, so if you guys watch it, let us know what you thought!

The whole crew was very professional and a pleasure to take out!

Do you guys flag or mark all the snares somehow? I just go off of memory but I couldn't keep track of that many. That's like 50 snares at every bait pile. I would imagine you would have all the bases covered. Keep up the good work. I love this thread every year.

I can understand that. I just can't grasp remembering that many. Obviously if there is a wolf in the snare it makes it easier to see. I would just worry about the end of the season and trying to pull them all. Obviously you guys have a good system. Keep up the good work.

Mark: the cabin is on a different lake that you never went too. The bait is set right about where the ranger is parked. About 200 yards from the cabin window. Yesterday Thomas arrived on the plane and Jack and Thomas checked a few sets on the way out to the lodge with some good luck. Today we're going to check a few more sets and spend the night out at the new cabin to hunt wolves.

huntmaster: shooting hours are 1 hour before sunrise and 1 hour after sunset. Shooting one with a bow would take a lot of prep work and patients. No one has tried it yet. Russell: there is a chance that you can take some hides with you if we can get permits in time. They started doing permits locally now instead of having to get them in Victoria. Otherwise it'll be about 6 weeks if they have to be shipped. Today we got a couple more marten and another lynx and a coyote.

Wayne, the snares are usually pretty visible against the snow, even for a novice like me.

They are set in openings (not really trails, but kinda like that idea) that the wolves run through as they go back and forth from the bait to the bush to eat. Most of the bait piles were set on the ice, and the wolves grab what they can and run back to cover to consume it. Being in the openings between small bushes, they stand out.

But I think Lloyd's eyes are very, very, very sharp, too.

16-Dec-14
Thanks Rock. I thought they would be harder to see than that. I can't seem to get away with that here on the coyotes. I have to camo them a lot more or they just walk up to them and then stop and go around. Looks like a real good time.

From: TSI
17-Dec-14
Do you guys use drag poles ot tie solid, here if we tie snares solid 50% of our coyotes chew through or break the wire.

17-Dec-14
TSI, I think you are either using the wrong wire/cable or aren't checking them often enough. Give an animal enough time and it will find a way out. I've always been a fan of checking more often but the guys that do it for a living vote for checking less. Gas money will eat up your fur check pretty quick.

From: TSI
17-Dec-14
Im useing commercial snares,i see them chew through over night if tied solid, very seldom with a drag.

From: Machias
17-Dec-14
If you're having 50% chew outs overnight, your most certainly using the wrong snares.

From: Goat Guide
17-Dec-14
Good locks so the snare can't back up are important, sometimes we even file teeth into the lock if it doesn't already have some. Also if chewing out is a problem, fasten the snare lower, sometimes this helps when they pull back and not have it run by there mouth. They can also pull harder this way, tightening the snare and cutting off the blood supply to the head.

17-Dec-14
interesting stuff. TSI, no offense meant. We all stand to learn something here. We can't attach a snare to a drag here. I think they are worried about a lion taking off with it. Goat Guide has definitely fine tuned his craft for what he's doing. Good stuff.

From: hunterx
17-Dec-14
I have found that by using a snare with a spring and a cam lock with teeth or an amberg lock chew outs don't happen. A lock that won't slip and a spring for that extra bit of tension made a world of difference for me.

From: Z Barebow
18-Dec-14
TSI- I am no expert, but look at Senneker Snares. This guys has killed more coyotes than Quaker has oats. He has a power snare that definitely eliminates your issue. Do a search on Marty Senneker and it is obvious he knows how to catch canines.

I watched a video of someone who does bait sites for coyotes, very similar to bait sites done by Babine. The guy would take 10+ coyotes from a bait site over a few weeks. He had ZERO concern for scent or camouflage of snares. Basically he would condition the coyotes to come in for a few weeks before he ever set snares. It took a lot of rebaiting, but it was effective.

In the last couple days all we got was a few marten and some weasels. There was wolves that came into the bait at the cabin but it was during the night. Today was the last day and we were able to snare another wolf. Thomas also shot a coyote that was crossing a lake while we were coming back from checking the wolf station. In the morning Thomas will be flying out.

Dennis Razza sent me this pic today.......he just finished the first of the two wolves from last January's trapline trip.

I'm really excited to see the pair together soon. This wolf will set atop a wall about 11' tall and look down in to the room, while the other will be on a rock coming down the side of the wall.

I think Dennis is planning to take the pair to some of the shows he does this winter.

Mark, your wolf is looking pretty awesome. We started putting sets back out the last couple days. One of the wolf stations has a wolverine hitting the bait and we'll spend some extra time this next trip trying to catch it. Still lots of lynx wondering around, looks good for them on the next trip. Those wolves look awesome!!! We have a father son team in camp on the trapline right now and we spent last night trying to shoot a wolf at the new outpost camp. We did see a wolf at 200 yards but he arrived 2 hours after legal shooting time and we could only watch him. He really stood out standing on the ice under the moonlight. After waiting till late morning for him to come back we checked some wolf snares with no luck but caught a couple weasel,a marten, 4 squirrels, and a lynx. Here is Aaron with todays weasel.

I have followed this thread annually and I love it.

I have noticed (I might be wrong) it seems like you catch more wolves early in the season and catch rates taper as the season progresses? Is this your observation or am I off base?

If this seems to happen every year, do you think it is because it is

#1- A simple reduction in numbers of catchable wolves?

#2- Or there is a fresh crop of uneducated " young" animals

#3- Or because they are pack animals, do you think the remainders become educated and much tougher to catch?

#4- Combination of all of the above, or other?

Just curious. Thanks and keep it coming.

From: Babine Guide
08-Jan-15
We normally catch the most wolves in January. I do believe that the middle of Feb. and March our catch numbers are down. Reason is most of the above, wolves get educated, young wolves are taken, and the fact that there are less wolves by then. The later hunts are more successful with shooting it seems though. Every year it seems like new packs move in from surrounding area.
