A big part of turkey hunting in the fall is finding birds then patterning them to increase your odds. Joe and I usually find and pattern birds before season while we're deer hunting. This fall has been no different as we had birds located in several areas. So with proper setup location, decoys out, and the right calls things happened. So far I've killed one and have one more to go. I'm gonna try to get my second bird with my 4 year old daughter so it should be fun and a little more challenging! ;-) I'll let the pics tell the story of my hunt and joe tell his hunt stories........

My first hunt was a fast action hunt in the same spot. We were suppose to go together but other priorities at last minute left me solo so I made the most of it. Same deal birds pretty much landed in my decoys and I let the one that looked the biggest have it. Little decoy action you can see my bird dead at the top left of the screen. I was dying to have my homie there to double up but all I could do was watch...

This was quite the year for acorns down low as you can see by the ground under the oak trees... My bird was full of acorns. Another tip is find birds, find there food source they hit during their daily ritual and you will have some opportunities. All part of patterning them during the fall which is key!

Bird #2 was in a different area. I had their roost pinned an the general direction of travel figured out. After hanging 3 cameras I found the main travel route and setup an ambush. Here was a good pic I got before my second bird was killed. As you can see the birds are strutting for hens trying to establish dominace. It's a year round thing for turkeys and that's why decoys work just as effective in the fall...

A cool morning found me perched up patiently waiting. No noise all mornin the woods were dead quiet. After 2 hours of sitting and getting a little restless I peeked out to my left to find 5 longbeards closing in quick on my deeks in full strut. Caught me totally off guard and I was fumbling around trying to get my bow unslung and an arrow knocked. Full draw at 14 yards I sent one home and 20 yards later I was standing over my trophy. Just like that my season came to a bittersweet end...

Also figured I'd add this even tho it's a gun kill. We continued the tradition of taking others as well this fall. These are 2 good friends of mine who went on their first turkey hunt together with me a few weeks ago an both got their first birds. It was a special day as they got engaged only weeks prior. Hope you guys don't mind the gun post...

I was thinking ibmight want to come out and hunt in northern California. Possibly somewhere with some altitude that has good weather. It don't have to be the private like y'all hunt and don't have to have so many turkeys but it would be nice if it was as pretty as I have never hunted anywhere that pretty. Maybe you guys are hunting in a golf coarse??? It just looks so manucured

I liked that hunt a lot. Thanks for sharing the excitement of a Fall hunt. Never have hunted them in the Fall so what calls might you use to attract them?

My best, Paul

From: trkyslr
04-Dec-14
paul, if theres both hens and toms around I'll hen talk with a few jake yelps mixed in... some fighting purring works well too in the fall... overall i turn down the volume of my calling just a little in the fall compared to the spring and rely more on patterning/being in front of their travel path and decoying.

From: writer
04-Dec-14
Paul, if you can get in tight on a big roost at fly-down you can do all the calling you want, and use about any calls you desire. Chances are you'll hear it all...hen yelping, hen cutting, hen gobbling, gobbler yelping, jake yelping, jake cutting...

We've been in tight on some roosts with upwards of 300 winter birds. It's a riot.

Take your tom or jake decoy if you go..

As Chris said, travel paths are always important. A really bad caller can sound like the world champion when he's setting where the turkeys have walked each of the past 30 days.
